having this issue now 7/10/15:

sent car in for service at the local dealer (via tow) because the car would not start, and if it did it would turn off by itself. The dealer after 4 days tells me that this is the recall part that is having the issue (fuel relay - which i was never told about - they forgot to send it to me) and that i can pick up the car and they will notify me when the part is ready. i asked them how am i supposed to drive a car that does not work. They told me its not their problem and to contact Chrysler on the recall. Chrysler tells me that they cannot give me a rental car right now because there is no date when the recalled part will be available (was told they haven't even manufactured it yet). now i have to wait until monday to find out if they will supply a rental. so in the mean time i am paying for a rental out of my pocket. seems like they would rather me drive the car and get into accident. you would think that after the airbag and ignition lawsuits and deaths they would begging to give me a rental. any thoughts about what to do now?

thanks

2011-2012 Dodge Durango/Jeep Grand Cherokee TIPM Repair/Bypass Solutions

This is a simple work around and will get you running until you and your dealer can get the recall permanently/correctly squared away.

At this point, your Durango is exhibiting the symptom that affects public safety. It's to the best interest of the dealer to get it resolved to help head off a potential health risk to not only you, but to other unsuspecting folks on the roadways. Simply asking you to drive it off the lot is crazy.

Maybe contact the service department via phone and attempt to schedule the recall work stating that parts likely need to be ordered, are likely in limited supply, your vehicle is currently affected, and exhibiting the symptom of shutting off periodically if it starts at all. Your dealer confirmed this is the root cause of the symptoms you at seeing.

The key is a service advisor needs to enter the order into the system for the TIPM rework kit. Otherwise you will not get on the list. I'm not sure they owe you a loaner or not. But, suggesting you drive the car before it is fixed presents a different issue.

When I got the recall they said they had no parts currently available, and that they would send me another notice saying when I can bring it in to the closest dealer (which is horrible to deal with), but I was having hard starts and being 20 years old there was little to no chance in hell I'd get a rental, and I have to get to work every day... So I emailed a different dealer and the next day a service guy called me saying that yes, they had the part, and yes, we can get you in tomorrow we just need to know a time. What they ended up doing was a remote relay mounted to the front bumper plastic stuff, shown in my picture. Try a different dealer, they do have the parts out there. I circled what they did in yellow just to highlight it a bit better.

My wife's has been doing the same thing for a few weeks. We dropped it off at a dealer and I was hoping it would act up for them so I could persuade them to install the current fix shown in the above post. Naturally it didn't act up for them so I bought the parts and had it installed at the shop I work at. No more hard starts..... It's amazing that they won't even install a temporary fix and rather let the car go as a huge safety hazard driving down the road. Not acceptable for my wife and kids to be driving that way, or get stuck somewhere in the 100+ degree summer weather in Phoenix. Keep up the good work Chrysler!

So went to purchase a 2011 Crew with the 5.7 took it out on a test drive and car stalls when coming to a stop. Tried starting it again multiple times with no luck. After 5 min car restarted. I'm assuming it's the relay in the tipm. Car is out of warranty so I'm wondering if I should pass on buying it? I put the VIN number in the gov auto recall site and it shows no open recalls for it but I'm reading here that there is a recall for the tipm relay. Really confused ! I really want this car but don't want to be stranded.

That's interesting. I've had no issues with my 2011 HEMI DD before or post recall work. In my opinion, the addition of the external rely is a valid fix for the faulty relay in the TIPM.

It's easy to see if the relay has been added. If so and the truck stalls, you might steer clear of this one as the problem could be something else - though the description of events sounds like this is it.

My fiancee had to get her 2013 r/t rango towed this morning. She's was driving and it randomly stalled going about 30mph. Now it wont start and is making a sputtering noise like its not getting fuel. We were aware of the fuel relay recall and were put on a waiting list till it came in, come to find out the part has been in for a month and we were never notified. They replaced that and still wont start. Lead mechanic has absolutely no idea what's wrong with it other than It doesn't sound normal when trying to start it Said they will be running all kind of test tomorrow, so hopefully some news. I'm going to mention the TIPM tomorrow and see if that is a possible issue.

The TIPM is the fuel pump relay fix they already did.
They should be able to diagnose that real quick if they cant that is sad

I got my 2011 Durango about 6 months ago and just got the recall in the mail 3 days ago. I've never had a problem with her at all. Then wouldn't ya know it, went to start it to come to work and boom, won't start. Definitely sounds like it's not getting gas. Off to the dealer now with my freshly received recall letter.

I bought my D a month before I started this thread (14 months now) and just got my recall notice in the mail the other day too...

as for the fix... very quick fix... I was in and out less than 2 hours

I own a 2013 (original owner) Durango RT. I have the same problem where the Durango shuts off randomly (while driving or idle at a light). I had the Durango serviced (fuel relay recall) and the problem came back, so far the Durango has shut down about a dozen times. Usually once a month. I have taken it back to the dealer and told the same thing. It seems as if the dealers are instructed to act clueless. Even when I show them video of this happening. If you have more information I would greatly appreciate it. I am also interested in seeing legal assistance.

Another recall has just been opened on July 10 2017 for continued engine shut off issues. Set to start servicing in August 2017
Here are the details. I hope this helps anyone out there. I loved my 2012 Durango R/T but will never buy another Dodge again, due to the way this issue was handled. It is dangerous and the service department at Tuttle Click Dodge in Tustin was horrible at handling it with the respect and concern that this issue deserves.

Alternator Fails Causing Engine Stalling While Driving

Recall Details
The alternator may fail, preventing battery charging and resulting possibly in the engine stalling while driving. The alternator may also short circuit, resulting in a fire. Dealers will inspect and replace affected alternators free of charge to resolve the concern.
Our Quick Take
For vehicles equipped with a 5.7L or 3.6L engine and a 160, 180 or 220 amp alternator, the alternator of the vehicle may fail, resulting in the engine stalling while driving. A failed alternator would also lead to a dead battery, preventing the vehicle from having electrical power to start. The alternator in affected vehicles also could possibly short circuit, causing an engine fire.
What Should You Do?
Recall repairs on your Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle must be performed by a Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealership. Chrysler will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in August, 2017. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with. The Chrysler recall number is T36.

Summary
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300, Dodge Durango, and 2012-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles. The affected vehicles have electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) and are equipped with a 5.7L or a 3.6L engine and a 160, 180 or 220 amp alternator. In the affected vehicles, the alternator may suddenly fail.
Consequence
If the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. There is also the possibility that the alternator may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the alternator and depending on the part number, will replace the alternator, if necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on August 24, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T36.
