I just returned from a one-week vacation, but I've been studying and researching this new 2014 Dodge Durango Citadel for months, and here are my frustrations... so far. In no particular order.

a) Dodge is very sloppy with their approach to marketing and advertising.
From errors in their brochure -- such as Page 9, which shows what appears to be a Maximum Steel Citadel that they describe in the blurb as "Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl" -- to a poorly-designed website that does not repeat the ease-of-use one would expect for so expensive a vehicle. And has anybody tried to get a printed brochure? I signed up for one online over 6 months ago, and never received it. The Dealers mostly have NONE. They've been telling me to "Just go to the website!" since June -- when the website was nothing more than a "Coming Soon" placeholder.

b) The Dealers are mostly clueless.
Ask them almost any question about the new technology on the 2014 Durango -- they don't know.
Ask them what the differences are between the 2013 and 2014 -- they don't know.
Ask them what colors are available -- they point you at the Jeep line -- or what interior colors come with what exterior colors -- "Uh... what's wrong with black?"

c) The pipeline was not primed for the launch.
Try to find any upscale version of the 2014 Durango -- you can't find them. Ask for a Maximum Steel with Light Frost Beige interior Citadel with the HEMI -- they don't exist except on an Order Form. You want an SXT in a dark color -- got it! R/T with everything in the body color -- probably can get it! Citadel?? What's that?

d) There are very few Incentives currently available.

e) Production will apparently take a while if you order one.
One Dealer said "6 to 8 weeks". Another said "I wouldn't bother if you want it before the New Year." And another said "Chrysler does a weird thing with their product lines. They build only sedan-type vehicles the first half of the new product year. Then they start on orders for the SUVs. We have parking lots full of new Avengers and Chargers. No 2014 Durangos."

f) Many Dealers do not have ANY 2014 Durango on their Lot.
Trust me. I've checked nearly all of them in a 5 State region. Washington DC to South Carolina. I drove over 600 miles to visit Dealers that were advertising Durango Citadels -- only to be told they had sold them "weeks ago" -- which I find hard to believe. My guess? They use it as a tactic to simply get you into the Dealership. If you check local Inventory online you'll see what I mean. Usually, they have 1... maybe 2... in the SXT or R/T version... in Black or White... with a black interior. That's it. You might have to travel 60 miles to see a Blue one. When I checked at every Dealer near Myrtle Beach they told me they found one Citadel with a HEMI -- in Fredericksburg, Virginia (near where I live).

g) When you express your frustration, you are offered only one or two options: "Come back after the first of the year." being the most-often suggested.

h) Everything was switched to black so far as the dash is concerned.
When I heard the Durango was getting the same interior as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, I was excited. The JGC has a gorgeous hand-stitched leather dash, for example. The Durango does not. Only the perforated and ventilated seats and instrument panel are similar. On the 2013 models there was this gorgeous two-tone treatment. Such as a taupe dash and accents with a beige sidewall. Now, you can have ANY color you want on the dash and accents -- so long as it's Black. I thank God, however, that they did not put in the suede headliner you find in the JGC Summit. Yuck! What a mistake that would've been.

i) Exterior color choices are abysmal -- if not somewhat restrictive.
There's Black. And Maximum Steel, which is so close to Black that one wonders why they offer it. I was shocked when someone told me it is actually considered a "metallic blue" -- I could only see that under very bright sunshine from odd angles. Then Granite Crystal which at least is at least quite a bit different from Black. And Silver -- being 4 shades along the same color palette. True Blue is so dark as to almost be part of that dark range. Two shades of Red which you are hard-pressed to even notice a difference. One Sandstone which is, well, quite ugly in my opinion. And White. I do like some of them, but nothing is a really exciting or strong choice. I do understand this is just my stupid opinion. Everybody's taste in color selection and combinations is different. Hot Cherry Red with a Metallic "Burgundy" Red (like the current color) might make sense, but two reds that are so close to each other makes me think they had a lot of red paint and had to do "something" with it.

j) The Citadel is over-priced at the Sticker, and the Dealers act amazed when you say you actually want to buy one.
Add the features many of us want and you climb to over $52,000 -- including Delivery Fee, All Wheel Drive, Technology Group, Tow Package, HEMI, Captain's Chairs, Center Console for those chairs, Skid Plate, and CD Player. Granted, most Dealers are discounting to near Invoice Price -- but come on. It seems ridiculously high to me in 2014.

k) What a dumb idea for a Remote CD Player!
Single disk. Hidden under the arm rest. No built-in hard drive for storing songs (even the lowly Honda Pilot gives you that). And just try finding a third-party option that fits this vehicle. I cannot (if you know of one, please let us know). All of this for a whopping $450 List!! I'm so flattered. There really was no possible way to create a CD slot in the fancy dash infotainment cluster? I must be old-school,because when I mentioned this at a few Dealers the response was "Does anybody actually listen to CDs, anymore?" or "Sirius Radio should be enough, I should think."

THIS IS NOT A DODGE OR DURANGO-BASHING THREAD.
My intent is to voice my current level of frustrations. I still like the design very much. But not being able to actually view the Citadel on a Lot is frustrating. Being told the only interior color that anyone has is black is frustrating. Being told by a Dealer that the 2013 is "Exactly the same as the 2014" because they don't really have any 2014s on their Lot after inviting you to drive 30 miles to take a test drive is maddening. :wall:

Although every friend I have is telling me to avoid domestic vehicles, and one lifetime mechanic told me he put his kids through college "repairing Dodge vehicles" -- I'm still interested. But I may find myself heading over to foreign manufacturers after this. And then I picked up the very latest issue of Consumer Reports with their Reliability Ratings for vehicles... hoo-boy!! :(

Come on down to Texas. Sat in a Hemi Citadel lst night at the dealership I bought my '14 R/T from!!

why on earth would you want a CD player, when you have the SD/USB media hub?
why on earth would you want a hard drive, when you have the SD/USB media hub?

Because...

Because I have a huge collection of CDs, which I find easier to carry on a trip at the drop of a hat, rather than to transfer everything or buy new from iTunes, etc. They're no longer being sold?

TXHEMI...
I'm sure you did sit in one. My guess is it had a black interior. I was originally looking for Maximum Steel with the Light Frost Beige interior, but have been told by 3 dealers there are none within 1,000 miles of the East Coast. So then I found a red one, finally, in South Carolina. That does have me thinking about buying the red one, but they were holding firm to Full List. The only Maximum Steel that I could find had the tan interior -- but I couldn't actually see it because the local Dealer needed to trade it from another Dealer, but would not until I made a commitment. I had to go another Dealer just to see the tan interior on an SXT -- which I did not care for, after all. If it had been a "saddle brown" I might have considered it, but the tan has a lot of yellow in it. I don't know how to describe this but you know when certain colors don't suit you.

I may end up doing that. I have local Dealers, of course, that will order anything I want. But it's a big purchase to make, sight unseen. At first, I thought White would be ideal. But I saw an earlier model in a different trim in a local parking lot. It seemed like a lot of white! Maybe I'm just too picky. It would be nice to see the 2014 White Citadel. One will pop up sooner or later...

You should take the time to get all your CDs into iTunes. With Apples rights now... you get crystal clear digital versions and via iCloud you have them EVERYWHERE. Just having CDs... I get it. Using them in a 1990 style... not so much. Moderize your approach.

As for the rest, my ADD kicked in and I didn't read it all. Nutshell response, dealers... all dealers... suck. They don't care that you are an enthusiast. In fact, that turns them off. Honda, BMW, Dodge, doesn't matter. They just want to sell the next car and move on. And for some of that... BS. Durangos and sedans aren't built on the same line or the same plant. There is no truth to filling the first half of the year with cars. Ridiculous. Whomever told you that should be slapped straight.

Yeah... I do agree on the CD issue. I'm not Apple oriented, but I could find alternatives. My phone is Android. Maybe it doesn't matter. I'm very tech-oriented, but just lack time. Anyway, I looked at the Honda Pilot, again, today. The local Dealer was such a jerk, I won't go back. I hate dealing with Car Dealers. I hate it more than going to the dentist.

So I've been sitting here drooling over the Durango for about the 20th time. The write-up at Allpar goes through a lot of good points. One thing I found out there -- the 2013 apparently had the same "copy CD to Hard Drive" that the Pilot does. Anyway, I can afford what I want. I think I just need to decide on a color... and whether or not the V8 is worth it. I drove a V8 at age 18 thru 24 and I think the boy in me misses it! Of course, one was in that '65 'Vette. Now, THAT was fun to drive then, but might feel quite strange today.

You'll probably end up ordering one, not likely you'll find one on a lot that is exactly what you want.

It took some hunting around before I was able to check out the drivetrain, model, interior color, and exterior color - all on different vehicles - for my '14 GC..

Like you, I am not a big fan of all-black interiors. I am kinda surprised that black is the only dash/carpet color available in any Durango, regardless of the other colors. I was pretty sure I wanted the frost/brown interior in my GC, but it took a couple months before one actually showed up on a lot around here. Luckily, the sales guy at the place I bought my last GC from was not a jerk; I had casually mentioned that I was kinda looking, but I really wanted to see that particular interior before I went any further.. a couple weeks later he called and said "we have a blue v6 overland with that interior on the way, it'll be here next week. Why don't you come up and check it out?" .. good thing he called, because it only lasted a week on the lot before it was sold.

As far as build times, I ordered my GC on 5/23, it hit the dealer's lot on 6/27. The order-tracking 'system' over on a jeep site has tracked a few Durangos; orders that started after the beginning of September seem to be taking about 6 weeks order->delivery.. Somewhere I read that JNAP has a delivery-time goal for customer-ordered vehicles, and it may be that the dealers that say it takes a long time either had their stock orders bumped for customer orders, or are just trying to get you to buy what they have and take possession of your wallet.

Of course, when you order the vehicle, you get the added benefit of "This vehicle built especially for Xxx Yyyy" on the window sticker ;)

Well, I should know in the next 3 days or so. I finally made offers to two local Dodge dealers. We'll see what happens. Then -- just before leaving work -- one of the Honda dealers got off their butts and called with a seemingly unbelievable deal on the 2013 Pilot Touring. Of course, he doesn't actually have the vehicle he was talking about -- just like the Dodge dealers don't have the 2014 ones I want. So we'll see who beats whom to the Finish Line. I appreciate everybody's input -- and, yes, I know they are two completely different animals. I will really feel bad for the Dodge guys if this doesn't go their way, but the ball's in their court, so to speak.

The Pilot is uber dated and scores really low on CR and MT. The D and the JGC... way ahead.

I know this is a Durango forum, but you would be better served with a better vehicle with better desire long term by picking the Dodge over the Honda.

Oh, believe me -- I know! :D The Durango is definitely the first choice, but might exceed the budget by quite a lot. I'm not comparing the two in any way -- except for affordability. My hope is the Dodge dealers will start talking seriously. Not one of them has really offered to order a vehicle. I get the feeling that ordering is more expensive to them than finding one in the system. Or maybe they don't get their money and kickbacks quickly enough.

Is exactly the situation. same reason you'll hear "if you buy today" offers.

Well, also, they'd sort-of like to move a vehicle they have sitting on the lot accumulating finance charges (which effectively happens on a 'search' because they are usually really a 'swap') ..

I finally saw all the Exterior Colors today. I must take back some of what I've said, now that I've seen them.
Sandstone is actually not a bad color -- more champagne than beige. The Citadel adds the right amount of bling to that color.
The Deep Cherry Red sparkles in the sun, but turns burgundy in the shade. One minute I like it. The next -- not so much.
The True Blue is not terribly bad.
Crystal Granite is very nice with a lot of metal-flake -- more the granular kind, not big flakes.
Maximum Steel is definitely not Black when it's in the sun.

Every single car (Durango or otherwise) on this dealer's lot had Black Interiors. Except for one Maximum Steel Durango Citadel with the Tan. It wasn't horrible, but I was stunned they had ZERO Light Frost Beige.

Pricing today was not good. I may wait until the Customer Cash incentives come out in December.

Glad you got to see some. What was the outcome on the Pilot?

You have more patience than I do.

Here's what I found...
Certain car dealers (perhaps brand-specific) do NOT understand the concept of "Internet Quotes". Every Honda dealer's website has a "Click Here for Quick Email Quote" button. You click it and a form pops up that you fill out. But you never get the quote. You get a phone call, instead, telling you that you need to come in and work something out. None of them -- but one -- would quote on the Pilot, or any other vehicle. Two told me they'd get fired. Two told me their Manager promised they'd sell the 2014 (which they have) for the same price as the 2013 -- I'm talking the Pilot Touring (their top-of-the-line).

The Dodge dealers, on the other hand, were very easy to get verbal (by cell phone) and written quotes from (by email). One dealer did admit that their button is also simply a method by which they get your name and number -- and that their Email Quote is exactly the same, typically, as their posted online special price.

So I stopped looking at the Pilot completely because I don't have time to go visit everyone. But -- truth-to-tell -- because I feel the Durango is a much better vehicle. Not quite as large on the inside (smaller by about 4-in wide at the back where you might lay your golf clubs cross-wise, which would easily fit in the Pilot), but the Pilot is completely lacking in refinement and ride feel, by comparison. Had I never looked at the Durango I'd be perfectly happy with the Pilot EX-L or Touring.

You get more standard features on the Pilot -- rear-seat DVD system, for example; select song-by-voice on the stereo; a decent CD player; hard drive for copying all of your CDs to the stereo system. Several things the Durango charges you extra for, or doesn't offer. But you miss access to almost anything high-tech -- adaptive cruise control; cross-path monitoring; digital dash (although the Pilot does offer loads of info about gas mileage, etc. on their screen).

The biggest deal-killer for me? I could not bring myself to pay an extra $3300 for one Pilot, now called a 2014, that EXACTLY matches the 2013 sitting next to it, which is on clearance. It's probably not fair, but there's not a single stitch difference between the two. Every photo in each brochure is identical (just made larger or repositioned).

Best offer so far on the Durango with my options: $46,280, plus Tags, Taxes, etc. My gut tells me in three weeks Chrysler will offer some additional Customer Cash-Back or some 0% Financing Deal -- and this will happen as soon as I drive mine off the lot. The dealer today said Ron Burgundy has increased Durango sales by 50% since his first commercial aired. Must be that thermoplastic-formed olefin glove box!!

In all of this, I've learned a few things...
1) Maryland has a whacky way of looking at Leases -- they charge you Sales Tax on the Full MSRP of the vehicle and all its Options, regardless of its negotiated price, and regardless of the fact you are only Leasing for 3 years. Crazy stupid for anyone to pay that! Then they charge you AGAIN if you decide to buy the car at the end. Or so I'm told -- I dropped the idea of Leasing.
2) Virginia Dealers try to get away with murder. They charge a $499 Documentation Fee when Maryland Dealers only charge $199. They charge Maryland buyers 6.2% Sales Tax when the Maryland Tax is only 6% -- presumably, pocketing the difference. Most try to force ridiculous Appearance Packages on you -- $600 for Nitrogen-filled tires from one and a few pieces of door edge protection. Really?? Virginia Dealers must think Maryland buyers are really stupid.

The only reason I'm so "patient" in this ordeal is I'm afraid of the payment. I can probably afford it, but my head is telling me I've never paid over $29,000 for a car, and it's wondering "Why now?" And my heart is saying "Because you survived to the age of 60 and you work a lot of long, thankless hours -- and you deserve it."

Chrysler has never had the best interior designers/color coordinators. Great ideas, poor color schemes and material choices.
