Does the sound of the Corsa change?

So I installed the Corsa yesterday and the wife absolutely hates it and doesn't like the D anymore. I have to admit I am kinda with her. It is much louder inside than they advertise and than others made it sound like. Yes it does sound good from outside but the low RPM frequency it emits in the cabin is very annoying. It is like deep yet kind of high pitched drone sound when lightly taking off from a stop. Everything is tight and nothing is rattling it is strictly the actual exhaust. The only time it is quiet in the cabin like they claimed is when off the throttle coasting. I had a pieced together Magnaflow on my LS2 Trailblazer SS with no cats, and LT Headers and it wasn't as loud in cabin as this. Can anybody give me any reassuring info? If this is how the Corsa is going to sound then I will be having a brand new Corsa w/ the black tips for sale and I will just have black tips welded onto the stock mufflers. Really disappointed :(:(:(:(

Yes, it does change. I can't say it gets quieter, but the "drone" you get between 2-2500K does diminish significantly, if not go away, after it breaks in for a couple months. I hated the drone initially, but I can't even hear it anymore

Did the drone go away or are you just used to it? I don't think I have a couple months. I don't know if Corsa will do a return or not seeing as I bought directly from them.

Don't like a product that is working as designed so just screw over the vendor? Really??? This is why I would never want to own a retail business.
Corsa sells a product that they claim to not have drone <== Redrum is saying he has drone. How is this screwing a vendor over ?
They should have provided him with a drone free exhaust like they advertise

I should have read their site before I posted. In principle that's what I believe but obviously they do make a HUGE deal about how their's doesn't drone so you are very correct. I would try to return it in this case.

I'm an engineer and did some work in acoustics in college. Seems to me that what they developed (noise reduction by phase cancellation) would only work at one frequency determined the chamber dimensions. For any other frequency than the one the chamber is sized for it would not work.

Also for some background purposes I have had a 95 Impala SS with a Borla catback, 07 TBSS with LT American Racing Headers, no cats, and a pieced together Magnaflow system. An 06 Ram Hemi with Flowmasters, a 98 K1500 with Magnaflows, and my dad has a 97 Camaro with Borla, an 04 Mustang with Magnaflow, and a 94(I believe) Lightning with Flowmasters. So I have plenty of experience with loud v8 dual exhaust systems and the only one that was more annoying tahn this one was the Ram with the Flows. And when you factor in the ridiculous price tag of the Corsa this becomes very aggravating.

This makes no sense to me. I've had two Corsa systems over the years with my Magnums and I've heard one on a Durango and I simply cannot believe that, at idle and low speeds, it's even AS loud as the setup you describe above. There is something WRONG with this installation.

As Boomer said the Drone dissapates
Just double check that you have all the Clamps exactly how they say and positioned exactly how they say.
Also look for any places it could be touching an underbody part etc. I know it was tricky getting it just right on mine as well also what position (how far out) do you have the Tips, yes it matters for noise because if the sound is emitting in an certain spot the Aero actually bounces the sound off the rear of the D

I will agree it does seem to go away with break in. I had mine installed at a shop and they left the exhaust hanging lower than I visually liked. I adjusted to my liking and the sound seemed to change with just a minor adjustment. Now my tips tuck away in the valance very nicely and the exhaust does sound smother and has less if any drone what so ever. I actually noticed yesterday I could barely hear the exhaust unless I intentionally gave it some heavy throttle.

All the clamps are vertical with the nuts facing down and towards the inside of the car with the exception of the last 2 sets which face outward. All clearances are good. The tips stick out about 1-2 millimeters past the bumper. If your looking down on them you can just barely see a slight black line sticking just past the bumper and I have each tip rotated about 1 inch so that the angles of the tip follow the curve of the bumper. They look perfect how they sit but could they be adjusted to change the sound? Exactly how should the tips be adjusted in relation to the position of the Corsa logo and how far out/in should they be? I'm willing to try adjustments to sse if it gets better

I have mine out about 1/2" and have no issues but most like to run them flush just double check all alignment as you can see above it makes a difference

Paying close attention to this. I am a couple weeks away from placing my order. This is one of those, "no dear, she always sounded like that" moments and drone would kill that.

I'm going to try adjusting the tips and see if it helps but I have a feeling that unless it drastically changes I'm going to be taking it off. My wife absolutely hates it as it is now. She seriously was almost crying yesterday she was so upset. Regardless of drone or not, you're never gonna be able to pass it off as it always sounded like that. It does sound good upon acceleration but it is a lot louder than even I expected.

Well, we will have to see how your works out. We do take road trips and while I want her to growl when I put my foot down we also need her quiet on the highway.

Redrum, I finished up my install Saturday and I have to say I don't have any of the effects that you described. Once I leave the office I will double confirm this but again I'm not having that issue. I think from inside the cabin city driving is slightly louder than stock and at idle basically the same.

are your clamps torqued down enough? they require a good amount of tightening.

i had a similar issue, thinking back, i don't think i cranked down the clamps enough when i had a magnaflow.

i did the corsa with a torque limiting wrench, and did the right amount of torque this time

#20 ·
All torqued to 45 ft. lbs per the instructions

Just drove around with the corsa installed. Idle-Deeper tone than stock but not obnoxious. Normal take off- deep tone from 1500-2000. WOT-using paddle shifters, amazing. HWY-cruising 65-75 very little drone (very manageable compared to the magnaflows I had in my 10 escalade). In the front, all I hear is my Volant CAI pulling in air and in the rear of the cabin is where I hear the corsa, nothing in the middle. In eco mode, even the stock has a bit of a drone. Overall, got what I wanted/needed.

I double checked after my original post, I haven't experience any real drone. Obviously these pipes are going to me more vocal at all rpm ranges, that's one of reasons the major of people purchase aftermarket exhausts for. I'm sorry to hear that your so unhappy and your wife. Happy wife, happy life... I have had much louder systems on other vehicles and actually think this is a fairly tame setup. Do you have the drone while accelerating through the rpm range or more of at cruising speeds? I want to try to replicate what you're experiencing in my vehicle. I think our systems were manufactured in the same batch.

We have a very loud drone when accelerating from a stop under light to medium throttle which is of course how she drives 90% of the time. Idling almost nothing, off throttle coasting nothing, light throttle cruising very little drone. It's really just the pulling off from a stop that is bad. I have triple checked everything. Clearances are more than enough everywhere, clamps are installed exactly as they say and torqued to their spec. It is purely exhaust noise. The wife is out but tomorrow after work I'm going to adjust the tips and see if I can change anything. The wife drives about 50-60 miles a day so I'm hoping if its going to change sound with break-in that it will happen quickly, hopefully maybe even by this weekend

Few thousand miles on mine, zero drone. USED to have some ever so slight (and I mean VERY slight) somewhere in 2-2.5k range, gone now.

I do not know if I would call it drone or not, but around town I can not drive with the eco button on. At speeds below 50 mph the sound, vibration or what ever it is drives me crazy. Not loud, just annoying. That being said I never liked the eco button before I installed my Corsa, but hate the button after install. Would not go back to regular R/T exhaust, love the sound of my Corsa!....as does the wife and kids. To me the sound does change over time, just keeps getting better :).

it will but you can still hear it over the wife complaining?

The exhaust sounds good but its still louder in cab on initial light acceleration then I would like. We're still on the fence about it but we are getting used to it. However the wife drove her mom and another girl she works with to lunch last week and her mom (sitting in the back seat) said and I quote " Jesus christ your car is freaking loud. You sound like you should be racing". And she didn't mean it as a compliment. If I had to do it over again I would probably save my self about $1,100 and just get some nice black tips and have an exhaust shop install them on the factory exhaust. So my verdict is that the exhaust does sound good when I feel like romping on it, but most of the time I'd rather it wasn't there. Oh and I still stand by my original statement to you, you will NEVER pass this off as "it always sounded like that". She will notice it in the house, half asleep, the first time you start it in the driveway or garage.

Like I said if I knew what I know now I might not have gotten it. That being said, its on there now, the sound has gotten better and will hopefully continue to improve so I don't foresee me ever taking it back off. I do believe I'm going to hold on to the stock setup for quite some time though just to be safe. I do enjoy the wonderful sound it makes when I feel like exercising that HEMI!

That is my struggle, When I am driving without the family I want that roar but when they are traveling in the back seat watching DVD's I don't need to drone to annoy the wife. Grrrrrrrr so close to pulling the trigger but hesitant.

#48 ·
Won't they be wearing headphones if watching DVDs? ;)

So I decided it was best to notify the wife and the result was better than Paul's. She is not happy with the Corsa price tag but totally fine with me upgrading. So I am kicking around the idea that my local performance shop recommended which is replacing the suitcase with magnaflow muffler, leave the resonators and add new tips for well under 4 bills. He said I won't have issues with drone but still get the growl and less restriction that the stock muffler has. This also leaves enough cash in the stash for the strut tower brace. My head hurts from thinking.

Tough call. By keeping the stock pipes and resonators, I would imagine you are still going to restrict the airflow a bit. It'll sound better, but I'd be curious what perf gains you'd gain out of it
