The Harmon Kardon Amp and additional speakers powered by that amp will NEVER EVER NO WAY turn on with Serius. It WILL work with FM (who cares) and anything you plug in even a dam phone. There's some technical data in my post from 2020 about it from some stereo gurus as to why it wont. I had it to the dealer 3 times they did the "case" thing and got Mopar tech involved and its never going to work. We went on the Dealer's lot and tested random vehicles with the HK systems . All vehicles with the head unit my 2020 has wont work. All other vehicles with the next gen HK head do work Bottom line there is NO fix for it and never will be. I've been on this since day one. To see for yourself, Turn it on Serius, You will have the basic speakers working. Push the surround sound button to see that surround is not on. Now switch to FM and Holy rock concert Batman!! all 19 speakers work and the full 800 watt Harmon Kardon system is active. Its the amp which powers those extra speakers that will not interface with Sirius and turn on. The next system down Alpine works fantastic. So DO NOT PAY THE EXTRA GRAND FOR THE HK SYSTEM.

IMO, it sounds terrible full-stop. Crazy harsh, overly bright, no depth, and no way to smooth it out with the pathetic 3-band EQ.

The Alpine we have now isn’t great, but at least it’s not fatiguing to listen to. And I didn’t pay extra for it.

But that’s just my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like…

As I mentioned before, I have been messing with different sources with some success, the best option is pretty clearly USB. It is critical that you have the quality on your source set as high as it goes, XM to Maximum, Spotify to Very High with data saver off, and ideally have an unlimited data plan... That said, I just cant let this go. Something seems fundamentally wrong with this system.

I played First XM through the head unit, then XM over usb on the app with the quality set at Maximum. The over all quality difference was noticeable but I noticed some of the same issues under both conditions while putting my ear up to each speaker and giving a listen:

Equalizer Settings:
Bass +2
Mid -6
Treb -8

Dash: (2)
Sounds, like maybe a coaxial mid driver and high tweeter, but I would think you could bring the low pass down on it. Doesn't have any body
Front Doors: (8)
Tweeter by the window sill is very bright, I would prefer to dial that back if possible. The lower portion of the door houses a separate coaxial mid driver and tweeter, and the low woofer. These particular woofers actually sound very good and reproduce a good rage of low frequencies. The mid driver sounds tinny, but that's sort of what makes a mid driver I would push the low pass down a little...
Rear Doors: (4)
The lower grill houses low frequency woofers. TO ME, THESE SOUND TUNED LIKE A MID DRIVER. This woofer is similar in size to the front doors but plays none of the same low frequencies.
The separate higher mounted grill seems to be a high tweeter, and sounds like as much. Again a little bright for my preference, but maybe not to all.
Rear high Speakers: (4)
Seem like they could be coaxial mid drivers and high tweeters, but really do sound like a cheap alarm clock radio. They need a lower crossover frequency, or maybe just more wattage?
Sub: (1)
Sounds very good actually but doesn't seem to be ported well, not a lot of passages for the base to come out of. I believe it to be a sealed plastic box with the woofer facing down. the base has to come through the back seats for your to hear it. May be slightly improved with back seats down. I did notice if you raise the flaps covering the rear seat hinges you can see the front of the sub box and the base is stronger.

(Total of 19 speakers, this is my best guess by listening and trying to look through the grilles with a flashlight)

In any high end sound system you want to have the high's, mid's and low's then sub frequencies all played on their own speakers, to have the least distortion and best dynamic accuracy. In this car the speakers just don't seem to have the correct low pass and high pass frequency settings to achieve ideal sound from the system as a whole. I wish this was user adjustable, but I do not think it is. If it is please share here... Side note, I did all of this with the "Surround Sound" turned off, all speakers still run with it off.

I tried turning the surround on, and it may have widened the frequency response of some of the mid drivers, but only slighly, but I actually preferred the sound with it off.

While doing more research I ran into the following site that seems to very clearly outline and explain the 19 speaker HK audio system in the Grand Cherokee, which appears to be identical to ours, except maybe the sub woofer. It does match my previous guesses, and also matches some of the parts I verified on Dodge parts websites...

I can certainly say, our sound systems are not performing as advertised. The 5 coaxial 90mm speakers (which count for 10 of the 19 speakers) are under performing badly, and the two 160mm woofers in the back doors sound no better than the little 90mm coaxial speakers, which themselves are disappointing. I really think there is some major tuning, ,wiring, amplification, or crossover issue with this whole system.

With a good source (not SiriusXM over the air, phone streaming, or otherwise), I think the system is remarkable. SiriusXM through the head unit is terrible, but that is a source issue, not a HK issue.

In my case, it’s not the source that’s the issue. SiriusXM played back via the built-in tuner is terrible, but I expected that - it does on every tuner I’ve used in various vehicles (played via the app through CarPlay is much better). My source is typically tracks downloaded or streamed via Apple Music, which sound fine elsewhere.

Not that the Alpine in our ‘21 is exactly great - it’s so insanely muddy and boomy that I’ve got the bass turned down to -7 (of 9), and the highs are really poorly tuned, but it’s at least tolerable.

Agreed, I really only play downloaded music podcasts from my phone, personally I think the HK system is pretty good with my source.......it could use more bass, personally a 10" sub in a vehicle with as much internal volume as the DD has it needs a 12" and porting. Granted I'd love to grab the 12" Type R box and 1200RMS class D from my last system, that would make the DDRT just thump, but then I'd be sacrificing storage area which I do need and use.

Personally I've had XM back in the day (10+ years ago) and the SQ just isn't there, the bitrate coming in just makes music sound tinny and lackluster, would never get the service again, heck I got the trial activated but I don't use it.

Urgh they used a 6x9 in the doors? I've never heard a 6x9 that can do anything but suck........they would have been better off with an 8" driver in the door.

So I'm wondering if there is only two wires going to the sub, what about looking at installing a small amp inline boosting power to the driver........and/or replace the driver with something that can perform better (granted need to find something that will work well in the volume of the box as well)

I was enjoying a little drive in the sun today after reading this thread and realized, my sub actually hits pretty good for a stock system.....I mean it ain't a 12" Type R on 1200wrms but its got enough thump to vibrate/shake all the rear view mirrors. I'm using downloaded podcasts, no live streaming on my cell connected through android auto.......now I have a EQ on the podcast app as well.

My audio settings on the Uconnect is +6 bass, +1 mid and +3 treb, but I'm running the stereo balanced to the rear (I find all factory stereos play too much to the front, so I usually end up putting the balance 2 or 3 steps to the rear)......maybe that is why my sub is driving more? it shouldn't make a difference but if the engineers designing the audio system balanced the sub with the front/rear settings then that might make a difference.

Was looking at some interior picture of an '19 SRT with the HK, and I found something different than my '21 TNG HK.

On the '20 and later DD model, there's one speaker on the door. On my '21 DD, theres 1 speaker on the lower portion of the door and 1 small one in the middle.

Can anyone confirm?

my english is bad i know sorry im french! I try my best 😢
I have a 2019 R/T with HK system. On the front doors, there are 3. One mounted by the mirror, one mid door, and one lower door. Back doors have two.

I've been out of the loop. Had a 2015 Durango RT with I think stock stereo. Traded that in for our current 18 DSRT with Beats. I really could care less about listening to music. I'd rather turn off the radio and listen to the engine. Can't beat the DSRT braaaapppp in between shifts!

Having said that. I thought the 15 radio was fine. The 18 is probably slightly above. There was a time with our 15 after I took it in for service. They had done an update to Uconnect without asking me first. I can't remember. But I want to say it made the sound real tinny. Like no bass and all treble.

I actually called dodge and complained. I believe I wasn't the only one. But a few months later they had a fix. I haven't read this thread. But what if it was just a programming that is causing bad audio?

This is why I refuse to pay $1000+for a supposed upgraded sound system. I was not happy when they messed up the 15 sound. I certainly wouldn't be happy to order a new one with bad sound.

Gosh, imagine how sad the Ford ecoboost guys must feel having to listen to piped in engine sounds to get the effect of a V8.... No thanks
