I'm a surfer and need to find a way to lock my key fob inside my D while I'm surfing. I would then unlock doors with the actual key part of the fob that I'll keep in a pocket on my wetsuit. So a couple of questions:

1. Is the Key safe to bring in the salt water, or could that corrode the chip that I assume is inside (but I could be wrong).

2. If found a way to lock the fob inside, but not without 3 rounds of 3 horn honks annoying everyone within half a mile.

3. If I do the above, upon unlocking the door with the key, the alarm goes off, which is loud and annoying.

Any solutions that I've missed?

I'm not a fan of hiding the fob. I've had too many friends' cars broken into (and even stolen) after thieves watched them hide the key.

that's a new one, never thought of leaving the fob inside and taking only key, the one time I had to use the key mechanically to unlock, I set off alarm, as well. I guess at some point a waterproof phone bag is the only thought, as I would not recommend any exposure of fob in water, especially salty

Key set to run engine off drivers window open, leave fob in the car some place secure, get out of the car close the door. Reach in the window and lock the doors put the car to off then auto up the window.

You might have to disable the auto entry feature.

I think joescar's aluminum-foil trick is worth a try.. it indeed runs on RF.

Whether too much RF will leak out of a haphazard foil wrap foil is not clear.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I have a related question.....
Is it possible to lock the D with the engine running and the key fob in your pocket?
Suppose I need to run in somewhere for a minute, and want to take the fob, but lock the truck and leave the engine and AC running; can it be done?

I guess I could try it, but thought I'd ask the experts first.

Thanks!

I don't think the hitch lock will work because I think it will still read the key and if someone goes up and pushes the button on your hatch its gonna unlock the car. Maybe the signal will be hidden from being in two metal tubes but I would certainly do a lot of testing first to make sure. If it works and doesn't unlock then that sounds like a great option. I would certainly go with the combination one that goes in the tube itself. Could even maybe hide it under the bumper cover if yours has one.

You could also bury the key at the beach and draw a treasure map, laminate the map and keep it in your pocket, lol

I like the idea of a water safe pouch too like one you would put your phone in but would be worried about losing it or it leaking or something and being totally screwed after that.

Yes, I do it all the time. Never had an issue.

Well, on another related note, I managed to wash my key fob last night. Left it in the pocket of my jeans, and into the washer it went. Had no idea it was there until the panic alarm went off on the DD and could not locate the fob to turn it off. Seems the spin cycle caused something to press on the panic button on the fob. Got the key out and so far it's still functioning normally. Can't hear any water sloshing around in it, and none dripped out. Time will tell if any damage was done, but it seemed to be water proof last night.

Yes but salt water will be a different story I suspect. Anyhow, have you tried just taking the battery out of the fob? That way you can just leave it in the center console bin and not worry about the alarm going off when you come to unlock with the key. Just a thought...

I did the same thing shortly after getting my 2015 Durango SSV -company work truck. All of the sudden, my panic alarm was going off (so sorry for all my neighbors) and I could not find the fob. Then, it dawned on me...left it in the pants pocket. Opened the washer and shut off the alarm. (Fob still works, no issues).

Yes just get out and close all the doors and click lock with it running.

The fobs themselves are pretty water resistant (I still don't take them fishing with me), but as already mentioned its not the water that's the problem, its the salt. It really is incredible how fast salt can destroy metal ad electronics, I treat it like its acid.
