Video below.

So basically my 2014 Durango R/T with the 5.7 Hemi and 74k miles on the clock has been making this strange noise for quite a while. It seems to be getting more and more noticeable now, and to the extent it doesn't seem normal anymore. It's most noticeable at idle when the engine is at its quietest, but it still happens when accelerating or bringing up the revs and whether you're in park, neutral or drive. It seems to be coming from toward the back of the engine and it happens when in drive or park. It sounds like a marble rolling around on a wooden floor

is the only way I can describe the noise. It's quite clear though in the video you can hear the noise and I popped the hood so you can hear it even clearer.

So I got the car when it was at 50k miles less than year ago had no issues. 15k miles ago back in June I changed the spark plugs when it hit 60k miles and the car ran lots smoother. I noticed some of the plugs were loose and I don't think they were the correct plug although there was so much confusion online about which plugs were correct so I ended up using the NGK plug finder and got the LFR5AIX-11 - 4469 Iridium IX plugs. About 3k miles ago I changed the oil wondering if the oil and no issues there. Maybe the oil is crap? I used Castrol Edge SAE 5w-20 fully synthetic recommended oil for the vehicle and a K&N oil filter for this vehicle. The oil still has 60% life left as per the car's computer.

The car was intermittently (like once a month) coming up with cylinder 1 misfire fault code and engine management light would come on. Always when the engine was cold and never any noticeable troubles always cylinder 1 it was happening more frequently before I changed the plugs. So I would reset it and be on my way no issues. I'm wondering first of all which cylinder is cylinder 1 is that front left or right? I was going to check the plug replace both and also the coil pack. Anything else I can check I'm pretty handy with cars? I also wonder if the oil is maybe no good any help would be appreciated. I would take this to my mechanic but pretty sure he will be scratching his head too

with not much to go on. I know preventive maintenance before anything going catastrophically wrong is always best. I'm going to pull the plug on cylinder 1 as soon as I know which cylinder that is and replace that coil. Maybe the spark plug came loose. I torqued to specs. But what torque are people using on spark plugs?

Thank-you and sorry for all the text just wanted to add as much detail as possible

Good luck!
I see you are a neighbor to the north. I hope there isn't some kind of stupid rule saying they won't honor it up there. Would not be the first time we have heard such nonsense.

Please come back, and let us know how things work out.

So thanks Don. It's booked in for next Tuesday. I'll let you know what happens. But it sounds exactly like the water pump. I found this video on the challenger forum same engine same noise and the guy said it was the water pump. See video here: New video by Sean Ford and thread here: This is what it sounds like when your 5.7 water pump...

Don it was the water pump. I cannot thank you enough for linking the article and everything. I called one Dodge dealership they didn't have a clue said they would call me back never did. I called another and they knew right away booked me in and today it's been done and pleased to report it's fixed with a $0 on the service bill here in Canada. Thanks again!

Glad to hear you are back on the road! We all appreciate when folks come back, and let us know the outcome. It's a sad statement though, when you reach out to a dealer, and get the deer in the headlights look. At one point, these water pumps were failing in such numbers, that FCA's supplier could not meet the demand. Said water pump was on national back order, and Durango/Jeep hemi owners were unable to drive their cars. Finally, someone at FCA woke up, and they began installing aftermarket pumps like NAPA, etc, to get folks up and running. Funny to think a dealer would not be aware of it.

Do you think the misfire on cylinder 1 was related? it happens about once a month on cold start. Always cylinder 1. I did the plugs maybe I should replace the coil on that cylinder?
Thanks

The oem plugs are NGK Iridium, and good for 100K. I don't think the WP would be related to a misfire issue. Consider swapping the coil from another cylinder to see if the misfire follows. Are you hearing any upper engine noises like lifter noise, etc?

No lifter noise or hemi tick no. It's always same cylinder. I used the NGK plugs recommended on NGK's website. It misfired before on that cylinder too. Do you know which cylinder is 1? is it the front right if you are stood facing the hood at the front

Still the case, ours failed Saturday evening, took it in Monday morning, got a status update today, no pumps available, no ETA, on backorder. Said it's on DOR status? I have no idea what that is. Also said they can't go aftermarket on a warranty claim. Hoping to get a loaner shortly. 2015 Hemi Durango went in service September 2016 and currently has 53,000 miles. Wife is almost apoplectic over it. While she likes driving my '16 300, she wants her car back!

Where you based? I'm in Calgary, Alberta

In this instance, the existing powertrain warranty matters not. IMO, the letter I attached says they are covered under the specified campaign guidelines period. There are members here that had dealers install aftermarket pumps to get them back on the road. I guess if they provide a loaner similar to what you have, it's not to bad. I would not want to be stuffed into some cramped puddle jumper lol.
