V6 Upgrade Thoughts Please!

I know there are threads about CAIs, cat backs, etc., but I find most of the discussion revolves around the Hemi. So apologies for starting a thread, just wanted the V6 addressed directly.

For those of with two less cylinders, what are some good bang-for-your-buck performance options? Would anything add 10-30 HP or is all of this stuff just a waste of money?

I have dual exhaust so I'm hoping most of the stuff that works for the V8 will work well with my V6. Or have the aftermarket stuff been designed specifically for V8 specs?

- Mopar CAI (my research shows a bit of HP gains plus better MPG)
- Cat back (not much if any HP, but better sound)
- ??

Anyone out there with a V6 that has added any mods--any feedback on gains, etc? I'm looking for an upgrade roadmap, for a budget of around $1,000-$1,500.

Thanks!

Things that work for the hemi will work for the v-6 as well. Just to a lesser amount. It is still an air pump, just like the hemi. More air in, more air out, more hp.

I'd love to get a better exhaust system for my V6, performance addition or not.. Mine has the singular tailpipe.. so I'd have to consider the cost of replacing the rear panel in addition to the exhaust system makeover..

Magnaflow makes a V6 system
Corsa and Borla will have to be modded
Personally I dont believe the Corsa has enough back pressure for the V6, they do need a little BP to build tq

Well, you've clearly never met me, lol. I don't even own a wrench. I like the Mopar one because I understand it's pretty much maintenance free.

Just order it online and install it yourself

I have learned a lot about engines, catalyitic converters, resonators, etc., but I would never attempt to do anything automotive related. Plus, I really don't even have 90 minutes to spare with 3 children under 4 years old!

You should have just bought the Hemi... Lol, kidding. Doubt you've heard that before :D. I'm glad to see a topic all about the V6. I'd like to do a dual exhaust still. Put mods on the backburner for now, but a CAI is definitely next for me
I did think about it, but didn't pull the trigger for several reasons.
- R/Ts with a middle bench are hard to find up here in Canada and a bench was a must.
- Our gas is expensive (when I was looking it was around $1.2/litre, or $4.5+ a gallon).
- Our vehicles and taxes are higher in general. A fully loaded R/T would probably come in at around $65k.

I'm very happy with the V6. If I can spend under $1,500 to get a Mopar CAI, performance exhaust, and Diablo (when they break the 2015 PCM) and add about 20-40hp to bring it up to 325-345hp I'd be very happy!

I wouldn't call myself super handy, but I did the mirror tap without issue and I plan on installing mine myself. Ordered it last night on Amazon.

month old thread.. bringing it back to life...

to the OP.. did you decide on CAI yet?

I went with AFE and the Pro Dry filter and absolutely love it! HUGE improvement in sound from stock intake system and i fell it has a little more power (or maybe it just SOUNDS like it!! LOL)

but the pro dry filter never needs oil.. just a simply rinse and dry filter..

Ok.. looks great... and question:

Is the existing air intake tube just hollow? Even where the formed plastic is in molded boxes along the tube? Is there some purpose to that at all?

And since there's no hood scoop to pull air in from, is it still just pulling all its air from the vent in the grille?

The box where the filter is is open on top.. does that meet with the hood when its closed or is it drawing in hot air from the engine compartment?

Sorry to be so questiony.. learning..

Does anyone think buying a V6 is just that? What do you need more performance for? Have you used the performance you have? Are you racing people off the line? It's a GIANT SUV.

You want performance?! Get the V8...Hemi baby!....CAI and cat back systems will give you marginal improvements. Like less than 10 HP. And real Cold Air Intakes, employ real cold air...Not an open filter in the engine compartment. More of a "ram air" system that has air coming from outside the engine compartment. I would encourage you to look up the difference.

me? I though I kinda explained that in post #25?

Being a v6 owner myself. Im of the opinion that i bought a v6 because i wasnt going to take advantage of the v8 and also gas prices where higher a year ago.
The v8 in my opinion was going to get me in trouble down the road.
With the Pentastar i have enough ponies and if i want to get a different sound then i add the cai, if i want more i just add the exhaust. And if i want to get more hp then i add a tuner.
Some may say its ridiculous to add a cai, exhaust and tuner to the Pentastar. But i say to each his own.
I had an 03 liberty renegade with the 3.7 v6 and i always felt it had potential the only problem was that i did not know where to start.
With my durango this time i am educating myself little by little. Eventhough i know that i will not be able to kick a hemis butt. At least i will try to give it a run for its money.

Also dont forget to add the family decal on your rear window to truly unlock the force inside the v6.

Alright, so I have a bit of a problem.

There's no way for me to get my hands on the Mopar CAI for less than $650 (plus $130 for installation). Dodge Canada will not budge on the price and I can't find a US store that will ship it to me for less than $60. In addition to the $60 shipping fee, I'd have to pay around $75 for the import duty.

A local shop here can do the K&N CAI for $340. Plus I can get a Gibson Axle Back system for $600. That's $940 for a CAI and an axle back vs. $650 for just the Mopar CAI. Or another way to look at it is I can get the K&N Filter plus an AIRAID throttle body spacer (does this thing do anything?) for less than the Mopar CAI.

Thoughts?

By the way, here's a Gibson axle back on V6:

Man that is steep for a CAI. Not sure if I ordered the damn thing and then shipped up to you if there would really be much of a savings? As far as K&N, someone else posted it was too loud for their taste. I think the Airraid and Mopar are pretty similar. As far at the Throttle bottle spacer, I read they were garbage.

I am very happy with my R/T exhaust on my 11 crew v6. I did a write up on it for all the single-pipe-to-dual-pipe conversions with part numbers and sound clips:

http://www.dodgedurango.net/forums/...e-durango-how-tos/18489-upgrading-single-v6-exhaust-r-t-duals-part-numbers.html

Also, for intake, I will have to get the Mopar kit, only because in CA it is the only one that is CARB legal, and I don't want to have to hassle with changing it out and storing the stock for emissions testing.

As for why I got the v6 and not the v8, it is because an equally equipped v8 in my area of CA was carrying a ~8-9k premium. I would have liked to have a v8 and would have paid a 2k premium, but the v6 is plenty of engine and I refuse to support dealer gouging.

I upgraded my exhaust for sound (any performance was just and added bonus), and will be adding CAI for the mpgs and every little bit helps (only getting ~13-14mpg with 95% city driving, again any performance is just an added bonus). A tuner (probably wont be) but might be added at a much later time for the same reason as the CAI
