Sorry if this has been asked before. I gave my youngest daugther my 2k Durango. She just emailed me asking for recommendations for using Sirius in the D. I had a stand alone Starmate which worked well when I used a cassette adapter. What have some of you done? Thanks.

I'm running a sportster 4 with FM through an antenna relay.
I use the Sportster Replay with the same relay. I just got the 2nd generation unit and put the old one in a home dock. I stayed with the Sportster Replay because I have the boombox as well.

I actually just bought the wifey a new sportster replay for the D. I have the older model (non-replay) in my car. I'm using the tape adapter on hers only because the FM modulator sucks in comparison. Maybe santa will bring her a CD player with an aux-in. :)

I have a xact visor I got at circuit city for $30. Works off an FM transmitter and isn't as clear as a CD, but I think it sounds as good as regular radio. Can't go wrong with sirius with the NFL and SEC (war eagle!!)

I too have found that a tape cassette adapter works pretty good. I use mine to connect my iPOD. The sound isn't perfect, but now I don't have to keep changing the channel on the FM transmitter everytime I go through a new town.

I have the sportster replay connected through the FM relay. Sounds reallygood.

I use and love the starmate replay and purchased the "wired FM modulation relay". I have a 2k Durango and the antenna is right inside the back of the glove compartment. I just disconnected it there, plugged in the FM relay and, anytime I listen to sirius, the antenna is basically disconnected so no bleed over.

It sounds great, probably the best next to a direct line into the receiver.

I also purchased a mounting bracket off of eBay that connects to the passenger seat front mounting bolt. It's bendable and is much nicer in my opinion than having it suction cupped on the dash.

I don't think I could ever go back to "normal" radio now. I love sirius, and I originally only purchased it for Howard, but I listen to so much more :)

When I finally get around to doing mine, it'll be a factory style Mopar kit that'll play right thru the head unit I installed in it which came out of an '03 Intrepid.
www.dodgeparts.com has the kit, and from the looks of it, it'll cost me about $300 to do it.

I'll agree this is the most expensive and most difficult way of getting Sirius, but when it's all installed, there'll be no additional receivers or anything visible, and my thumb controls on the steering wheel will be able to control it.

Out of curiosity, where's the antenna mounted on an '03 D with factory Sirius? A pic would be great. I've seen them on Caravans, and they're about 3' back from the windshield on the center of the roof. Out of all the Durangos I see, not one has ever had factory Sirius.

Sirius recomends that all antennas on SUVs/vans be mounted in the rear of the vehicle on the roof about five inches from the liftgate in the center. But I don't see why it wouldn't work in the front either.

Sandman88, can you send me or post a pic of the flexible mount you used and the name of the eBay seller/model number etc? I need the same set up to use Sirius in my Sentra commutermobile.

twccnews@hotmail.com for the pic.

Thanks.

My Sirius antena is mounted up front on the roof right behind my visor. It works absolutely perfect. The Sirius is built in to my Pioneer head unit.

Hrm, for $300 I'd buy a nice HU with an aux in (or move to a hidden tuner.) Those new all-in-one (HU+Sat tuner) units are pretty slick. However, the display is nowhere near that of a PnP.

2¢ deposited :)

Problem I have with doing this is it looks aftermarket. I hate the way aftermarket head units look. Besides, then I'd have to get an interface to make the thumb controls on the steering wheel work, which would probably cost even more than just buying the factory Mopar Sirius kit, which aside from having an external antenna, would be totally undetectable.

Theft potential would be all but nonexistent too since nothing looks out of the ordinary.

If you've never had steering wheel thumb controls for your radio, you don't know what you're missing.

Something to be careful about with OEM headunits is the display?

I haven't looked at this since late '03, but at that time the only OEM headunit that was capable of displaying most of the info on sirius streams was the RB1? all the others "do sirius", but couldn't (for example) display the song title or artist?

in late '03 I rented an '04 Caravan with factory Sirius? and all it could display was the stream number?

so, caveat emptor?

You're right?RB1 is the only one that'll display title/artist. The other Sirius capable units only display the channel number that you're on.

Still, that's no biggie for me?I'll just thumb thru them as I want, and can preset my favorites to the preset buttons.

One of these days I may get an RB1 head unit for it. Navigation radios are the bomb diggity! :)
