I'm worried sick. I now have 117K on my beloved D and have discovered a leak in the rear main seal.

With the D on the ground it was hard to tell if it was the tranny pan but, with it up in the air, the guy who does my oil changes says it's the rear main seal. I'm not finding any leakage in my driveway yet, just a little wetness under the truck.

The exterior and interior, with the exception of the rotted running board supports and one small spot of rust on the front bumper, still look show room new. More importantly, I can't afford a new car any time soon. So, how worried should I be about this leak? People always told me the 318 engines last forever. Would you guys leave it alone, get the seal replaced, or sell it?

I replaced mine at 130k. No problems since.

Something as costly as a rear main seal replacement, I'd wait until it starts to leave evidence on the driveway. If it doesn't drip on to the driveway, it can't be that bad. Wipe it down every oil change and worry later if it gets worse. Do not add any stop leak junk to the crankcase.

Note, any oil leaks on the top of the engine will run down between the tranny and engine. Trust me I've had lots of leaks. The valve covers are a somewhat common source.

I don't remember the cost, I had the dealer do it as they have all of my mechanical stuff. Great shop.

If I remember correctly, on the 4x4's it involves the front diff being dropped to get access to everything. So DIYers would need some way to support the engine while fixing this.
