My rear hatch rattles when going over bumps in the road and it gets annoying after a while. has anyone else experienced this? is there an adjustment to tighten it up? :? thanks

On my 01' there are some adjustable bump stops back near the taillights on the body between the weatherstripping and the lights. May be different on yours, but there should be some bump stops there somewhere. A quick adjustment to those, and problem solved.

You can adjust the catch to make it tighter

bringing back up this old thread about trying to get rid of this annoying hatch rattle.

it does it when I hit a bump in the road or rough pavement. I adjusted the latch and tried to move the bump stops over (doesn't seem like they have a adjustment on them that I can tell?) there's a hard plastic piece that mounts onto the hatch itself that hits the rubber bump stop when you close it. I wonder if the bump stops are just worn out from the compression and losing their effectiveness? :? I verified that the bump stops are the same on the 99 and the 01.

any help appreciated!

Doesn't the catch on the D's floor move forward a bit to tighten hatch. I remember doing mine a few years ago.

With the hatch open, move it up and down real fast to mimic a bumpy situation and see if something's loose inside the door?

Did you should check the hinges at the top of the door or perhaps the lift struts? I don't know why one would come loose, but maybe a spot to look at.

Just make sure you post a video of this for our amusement.
that would be hilarious! anyway I went out and tried to mimic it and nothing! so what I did was rolled up some double sided tape a few times and put it on the rubber bumpers where the hatch makes contact to built it up a bit and the noise is definitely less and hardly heard. So I'm off to see if I can get some new bump stops, just hope they're not discontinued!

I have to hold my tailgate up or prop it up with a 2.5' dowel as the up/ down is easy with no resistance from the lift struts. Another one of those not-so-important things on my list of things to fix. :wall: ;)

wonder how long the struts last?

That's what the wife is for. Karen held the hatch while I put in new struts just a couple of weeks ago.

The struts on our 99 lasted 9 years. I used a 2x4 in the garage to hold the hatch up, but I was very surprised at just how heavy that hatch is with only one strut!

I changed both struts on my uncle's 97 caravan. I used a pair of vice grips. Worked like a charm but had to use padding for the new strut to replace the other old one.

I also had to replace mine at about the 8 year mark and +2 on the PITA.

I used a broom handle to prop the hatch open and getting the old ones off was real easy. It was getting the new ones to "stay" on that sucked? the ball at the top end of the strut keep wanting to pop back off!! :wall:

Note: Mine never rattled or made any noises, the hatch just wouldn't stay open.
