Hi everyone,

I'm new here, and as new to towing as you can get. I've got a 2015 Durango SXT Rallye RWD with the following specs:
engine: 3.6L V6
tires: 265/50R20 BSW All Season tires
factory installed Trailer Tow Group IV (came with 180 amp alternator, heavy duty engine cooling, class IV receiver, 7 & 4 pin wiring harness)
electronic stability control
rear load leveling suspension
trailer sway damping (is this the same as sway control I've seen people post here???)

I've been reading through dozens of posts and see lots of stuff I need to get that I didn't know about, plus I'm getting different info depending on which trailer dealer I talk to. I want something not too heavy that's easy to tow and fits in smaller rv parks and smaller, tighter mountain roads. There's 2 adults, 3 kids ages 7, 11, 12, so we need the 5 sleeping spots plus must have the 6cu fridge. We will be traveling a few thousand miles each trip, from Southern CA to Montana and Idaho area, staying in several locations throughout Western MT for 4-5 weeks every summer, then small 2-3 day trips to the Sierra Nevada mountains rest of year.

I'm looking at getting a travel trailer, one of these 2017 Keystone Bullet 202bhswe - Camping World - LVN1350758 or possibly one of these 2 Salem Cruise Lite West Travel Trailers / Toy Haulers by Forest River RV or Wildwood X-Lite West Travel Trailers / Toy Haulers by Forest River RV which are basically the same thing.

Questions are:
Would these be too big and too much for such long drives (I've seen the posts with people towing 27', 7k trailers, no thanks!? I know I've got roughly 6k towing on my Durango, and I don't plan on having the trailers anywhere near their full capacity. We camp very light, have always been a tiny tent and one small cooler, one small duffle bag per person.

What extra items do I need to purchase in order to tow one of these trailers? I've read the need for WDH and sway control, but what else is needed and where's the best place to purchase? My Durango came with an electronic brake kit (says it's a harness for ease of installation of an electronic brake controller)

Any tips/info would be a great help and truly appreciated. Trailers are new to us, always been tent campers and UL backpacker (tenkara fly fisher), but life threw a curve ball and those aren't possible anymore. But the mountains and trout still call, so we must adapt and improvise. We can still fly fish, we're still young, and our kids love it as much as we do.

Thanks

I pull a 25' bunkhouse travel trailer with my 2011 v6.

It is very similar in layout and weight as the 201BHXL.

I use a Reese round bar W/D hitch and have zero problems towing even in wind.

Most will tell you to buy a Teknosha P3 brake controller, but that is serious overkill for your application. I recommend and use the Teknosha Prodigy IQ and it does a more than adequate job.

I am a Salem Wildwood dealer and I assure you that they are not just similar; they are the built on the same assembly line by the same people.

@Romany16 : thanks for the info, I'm looking at either the Salem or Wildwood now, not lots of dealers with good selections where I live. I checked out the brake controllers and will get the Prodigy IQ, definitely fits what I'll need without the overkill of the P3.

Another question: Does everyone just tow with the trailer completely emptied of all water, only loaded with whatever items you'll need for the trip, then fill tanks at RV park, then dump everything before you move to the next place? That's what I figured was the best way to go, then I'll minimize the towing weight.
