Hello to all

My name is Donny and I just purchased a 99 Durango

The D is an SLT 4X4 with the 5.9

I picked it up from the original owner with 166k on it

He sold it to me for $3000 because the engine had a bad miss, so I did just a little research and found out about the lower intake gasket problem.

I replaced the gasket and did the cap-roter-plugs and a new MAP senser.

It runs like a top now but the tranny feels like it's leaving from a stop in 3rd gear, I couldn't feel this problem when the engine was running so rough.

I cleard all the codes and re scanned and came up with p1765 and p0753.

I took it to the stealership for them to find the cause and they came back with a bad PCM and want $700 for a new PCM installed.

Now for the questions, does this sound right? has anyone else had this problem?

By the way I'm WAY into moding this thing out (as much as the wife will let me, we got it for her to drive), I have already had the front two windows tinted to mach the rears and installed a Pioneer CD player.

My car is a 96 dcm Caprice wagon with the LT-1 with all the boltons- comp 1.6 rollers-comp beehive springs-3000 Edge stall converter-stage 2 bult tranny with all the goodies-3:73 posi rearend-eibach 2 inch drop springs-SS grill-SSwheels-full window tint-clear corner lights-paint matched door handles-rear rollpan-Ect?

thanks for any replys any help would be great

$700 is WAY too much?we had it done for just under $400. The symptoms were NO BUS displayed in the odometer and the engine would cut out at random.

I'd find another dealer.

The codes read out for a voltage problem at the TCC and a solenoid problem in the tranny. The solenoids are a running problem with the tranny, and can be changed by dropping the pan and the valve body. Not very expensive. Also it gives you a chance to look at the condition of the tranny. Use ATF+4 fluid for the refill, not compatible but real ATF+4. It's now available at the parts stores, or you can get it fairly reasonably from the dealer.

If the problem is in the TCC (which is separate from the PCM on the 99) you might have to replace it. I'm sure one of our "techs" can tell you whether a used one will work and what they should cost.

FYI you can buy genuine Mopar ATF+4 at Wal-Mart. They now also have Mopar 5281090 oil filters (the ones that our engines as well as most newer Chrysler products take).
That's great news! I no longer have to buy the "orange can of death" if I need a filter late at night!

P1765: Voltage detected at the Transmission Relay Control Circuit is different than the expected voltage for 3 seconds:

I'd pull all the relays out of the PDC, clean the lugs, and reinstall? remove, inspect, and reconnect the PCM connectors (there's no separate transmission controller on a 99.) Make sure the battery is good and the alternator is working properly. Inspect and reseat all the connectors at the transmission.

Clear the codes and see what comes back.

P0753: Tranny 3-4 shift solenoid / tranny relay circuits
This kind of points to the same thing. I think the (up to) 8 relays that are together over on one side of the PDC are interchangeable, you might want to try swapping the tranny relay with another one.

If you're still getting that 1765, the 0753 may be spurious? because when the tranmission control relay circuit isn't working right, any of the solenoids may pop a code as well. If you get the 0753 without the 1765, then it's probably time to consider replacing the solenoid pack in the tranny? though it could in fact be the PCM?

In any event, once you get rid of that 1765, you should do a filter/fluid/band-adjust on the tranny?

PCM: powertrain control module, under the hood on the right wheel well.
PDC: power distribution center, under the hood on the right wheel well.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I did change the fluid, filter and adjusted the bands right after I got the engine running and I got the type 4 fluid from carquest.

I do seem to recall the service guy said something about wiggling the connections on the PCM and that's what led him to believe the PCM was bad (I was at work when he called me , it was loud and hard to here him) Is corrosion on the terminals a common problem?

I really don't want to hand the stealership $700 for a part that I could have just cleaned up.

In all of your collective opinions do you believe the solenoid under the tranny pan is the problem that would make the tranny feel like it's struggling to leave a dead stop? It feels fine after you cross an intersection on the road.

clean up the relays, try a relay swap, and check the PCM connectors before you go and do something that'll get your hands dirty?

Mike, Tom and Mike who replied above are some of the real D experts? so I'd follow up on their instructions and see if that doesn't save you most of that $700.

Welcome to the Club BTW, hope you find us useful. As for me? not so useful this time but hey! LOL.

No auto parts stores around you open till midnight? There's 2 Murray's open 24 hours and 2 here open until Midnight.

Of course the closest store to me closes at 9. :wall:

Thanks for the advice tomk, you win the award and I'll use your advice to try to save some cash.

I'm not afraid of getting dirty, I did all the other work myself, I just hate wiring (read-I suck at it.) ;)

I'll now attempt to post pics just to see if I can :?

NICE TRACKS!!

the Caprice was always a sleeper. That's why the cops always loved them :) So they could creap up on ya fast before ya knew it hehe :)

And they don't explode when hit in the rear like the Crown Vic.

Yes the relays are interchangeable in the PDC. The new replacement relays at the dealer are a better quality, and just plug right in.

LOL, ROTFL.

Not meant to be a slam I sure, but could have been! :)

IndyD
Now Indy, unlike you I wouldn't do that to anyone :naughty: ok maybe someone here and there.
In this instance it was meant as a compliment he could pull up to an unsuspecting pony car and hand him his ass!! What'll the guy do then go and tell his wife "Honey I need some more parts for my 5.0 because I got beat by a woodgrained station wagon." She'd throw him out!

OMG?
