Hello Gents,

We have some 2021 Durango police interceptors and all of them are having an issue where after a start up and cool down (we start it in the day, but then shut it off for a bit and turn it back on) they crank but won't start until we stop the cranking process then start it again.

our 2020s don't do this, but all 2021s do...

Any idea what is going on?

We asked the dealer and was told this is a "security feature" and key has to be paired with lock/unlock which imo is bs and doesn't work anyways.

any suggestions as to what it can be?

here is a video of the issue

I wanted to come on here and post about my recent issues with the long crank/start in my 33,000 mile 2021 Durango R/T. I experienced this issue almost everyday. I read through the forum for a few days and made the conclusion it was fuel line/fuel pump related. I took it to the dealer showed them a video of what was going on and they ended up being able to replicate the fuel pump and found it has fixed my issue. Apparently there is a TSB out from the manufacturer on this specific issue stating how to properly fix it. I was told the fuel pump is in a 2 year warranty and I might have to replace it again at some point. But so far everything is working as normal now.

Update: My wife has been doing the double button push for a week now, but it has still been doing the long crank. Kinda shoots down my theory of the fuel pump. We’re fed up with it. Purchased a clean 17 Navigator today and our local dealer has agreed to purchase our Durango from us with the known issue.

@ Ford141:
Correct. Press it twice w out the brake pedal being pushed. How many miles on your '21 D? Not sure if the 3.6l uses the same pump, but there were a number of '21's with the 5.7L that had bad pumps very early on.

Try pressing START for a few seconds without pressing the brake so the pump can build up pressure. Then press both and see if it starts right up. That would then indicate it's pump related. Pressing START with the fob works only when the fob battery is weak.

I also have a 21 GT that we bought about 4 months ago. The long cranks are very annoying and frustrating. Never any codes. Tried starting it with the key fob pressed to the button, doesn't work. Should I try replacing the fuel pump? Does that seem to be the solution for most people? We love the car besides this problem, but this problem is making us hate it. Considering getting rid of it if we can't figure out the issue. Is there anyway to test the fuel pressure?

I'm in this boat, too. And I'm sad because I do really like the car.
Has anyone also noticed that their 2021 DD seems to run really high at start up? And sometimes doesn't come back down until I put the vehicle into reverse or drive.
Worse though is the strange long start, same as everyone else has described.
Do I replace starter and fuel pump?
I don't want to end up stranded. I already have failed transmission on the Interstate PTSD (a Jeep). And I don't want it catching fire! 😫

Chiming in as well for any updates

21 Tow n Go. 60k had it for about 4 months and it had left me hanging 4 X's. Toyota dealer has replaced fuel pumps,TIPM previously and starter button this last trip. No codes pop and even more maddening is one case it would not start for several hours. Tow truck picks me up and drives 5 minutes to my house, roll it off and it starts right up.

Dealer could never replicate it and never get a code. Would be happy to figure out a work around but none of the aforementioned tricks work.

Have the extended cranking issue on my 20 DDRT. Fuel pressure test while running is 62psi. After shutoff and resting for 20 minutes fuel pressure with motor off had dropped to 20psi. Regulator or check valve not working properly allowing pressure to bleed back to the tank. Tried the procedure of pushing start button with foot off the brake and that has worked. Again that points to a fuel pump issue. With such a history of failures Dodge should do something. Fuel pump currently on back order for 30 days.

Replace the starter and see what happens after.

I have a 2022 that we ordered and it is doing the same thing. It is in the shop now for the 5th time. Mine is not a interceptor. It is my wife's daily driver. At times ours will start, but the starter stays engaged even after the engine has started. So the engine is running and the starter is running too. Very frustrating and it gets very hot. This is our 3rd Durango in 10 years and the 1st one we have had any issues. I spoke with one gentleman while we were at a campground and heard what it was doing. He informed that he had one that done the same thing and the dealership could not figure it out. He stated his eventually caught on fire under the hood. That is not a chance I am willing to take with my wife and grandchildren in this vehicle. Now she doesn't want to use the vehicle because she is afraid it is going to catch on fire.

I have been having the exact same starting issue for a year and a half with my 21. The dealership cannot seem to get it to do it in their presence so therefore they cannot diagnose it. Mine gives off a strange chemical like smell after not starting which is concerning. To say it's frustrating would be an understatement! Has anyone had any luck figuring out what the exact issue is?

I've read the post on the issue with long crack times on the 2021 Dodge Durango. I have had the issue for over a year. It only happens a couple of times a week. I've taking the car to the dealer several times and they cannot duplicate the issue so to them there is no issue and the will not throw parts at the car. I've left the car there several days. They said they did not duplicate the issue and there is no problem. I called Chrysler care and they suggested to me to go to another dealer service department. I am just curious if anyone with the problem and got the issue fixed yet. Thanks

This sounds like Dodge may have had a run of bad fuel pumps, much like the 5.7L water pump issue back in the '13-'17 years.

@seanmaguire:
If you are still around, a bit of searching here, or via Google in general, will reveal that the racetrack light has suffered from this issue from its inception in '14. The racetrack light is quite the sore spot, and rightly so being $1k or better to replace it when out of warranty. Some folks have had luck getting help via their extended warranty, while others have not.

Hey all - have just over 15,000 KM on my 2021 Durango R/T TNG - the odd long start started about 6 months ago. Very intermittent, but still concerning. Then about 3 weeks ago the first no start on first attempt, then it would fire up on the 2nd. Happened again about a week ago, and then 2 days ago, driving home, it start hesitating, then completely died. It would not start. Had it towed to the dealership and they just informed me it needs a new fuel pump. They had it in stock, so I'll get it back later today / tomorrow. Hopefully that will be that.

Try priming the fuel system before a start by pressing the start button but not the brake. Hold it for a few seconds and the pump should prime the system. Then press the brake and the start button. If it starts easily each time you do this then the pump is likely to blame. It would be unusual for a '21 to have this problem but not unheard of. If you still have some factory warranty then it should be covered.

Just demand a dealer buyback and go through channels to make it happen. Research the lemon law in your state. You start at the dealer. Lots of buybacks come from Kalifornia so there must be a law there that makes it easier to do.

My mom and I have a 2021 dodge durango Gt plus and both have been doing the extended crank. We brought the cars to the dealer they had a Dodge Tech come out and try and fix it with no success they gave us our cars back and said file a claim. So now we are waiting for legal to let us know what are the offers. Please everyone contact your local Dodge and ask about filing a claim. These cars do not have fixes. As proof I would record everytime before starting and state the date and time in your video as confirmation for what your showing.
