My Frustrations with Shopping for a 2014 Citadel

I just returned from a one-week vacation, but I've been studying and researching this new 2014 Dodge Durango Citadel for months, and here are my frustrations... so far. In no particular order.

a) Dodge is very sloppy with their approach to marketing and advertising.
From errors in their brochure -- such as Page 9, which shows what appears to be a Maximum Steel Citadel that they describe in the blurb as "Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl" -- to a poorly-designed website that does not repeat the ease-of-use one would expect for so expensive a vehicle. And has anybody tried to get a printed brochure? I signed up for one online over 6 months ago, and never received it. The Dealers mostly have NONE. They've been telling me to "Just go to the website!" since June -- when the website was nothing more than a "Coming Soon" placeholder.

b) The Dealers are mostly clueless.
Ask them almost any question about the new technology on the 2014 Durango -- they don't know.
Ask them what the differences are between the 2013 and 2014 -- they don't know.
Ask them what colors are available -- they point you at the Jeep line -- or what interior colors come with what exterior colors -- "Uh... what's wrong with black?"

c) The pipeline was not primed for the launch.
Try to find any upscale version of the 2014 Durango -- you can't find them. Ask for a Maximum Steel with Light Frost Beige interior Citadel with the HEMI -- they don't exist except on an Order Form. You want an SXT in a dark color -- got it! R/T with everything in the body color -- probably can get it! Citadel?? What's that?

d) There are very few Incentives currently available.

e) Production will apparently take a while if you order one.
One Dealer said "6 to 8 weeks". Another said "I wouldn't bother if you want it before the New Year." And another said "Chrysler does a weird thing with their product lines. They build only sedan-type vehicles the first half of the new product year. Then they start on orders for the SUVs. We have parking lots full of new Avengers and Chargers. No 2014 Durangos."

f) Many Dealers do not have ANY 2014 Durango on their Lot.
Trust me. I've checked nearly all of them in a 5 State region. Washington DC to South Carolina. I drove over 600 miles to visit Dealers that were advertising Durango Citadels -- only to be told they had sold them "weeks ago" -- which I find hard to believe. My guess? They use it as a tactic to simply get you into the Dealership. If you check local Inventory online you'll see what I mean. Usually, they have 1... maybe 2... in the SXT or R/T version... in Black or White... with a black interior. That's it. You might have to travel 60 miles to see a Blue one. When I checked at every Dealer near Myrtle Beach they told me they found one Citadel with a HEMI -- in Fredericksburg, Virginia (near where I live).

g) When you express your frustration, you are offered only one or two options: "Come back after the first of the year." being the most-often suggested.

h) Everything was switched to black so far as the dash is concerned.
When I heard the Durango was getting the same interior as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, I was excited. The JGC has a gorgeous hand-stitched leather dash, for example. The Durango does not. Only the perforated and ventilated seats and instrument panel are similar. On the 2013 models there was this gorgeous two-tone treatment. Such as a taupe dash and accents with a beige sidewall. Now, you can have ANY color you want on the dash and accents -- so long as it's Black. I thank God, however, that they did not put in the suede headliner you find in the JGC Summit. Yuck! What a mistake that would've been.

i) Exterior color choices are abysmal -- if not somewhat restrictive.
There's Black. And Maximum Steel, which is so close to Black that one wonders why they offer it. I was shocked when someone told me it is actually considered a "metallic blue" -- I could only see that under very bright sunshine from odd angles. Then Granite Crystal which at least is at least quite a bit different from Black. And Silver -- being 4 shades along the same color palette. True Blue is so dark as to almost be part of that dark range. Two shades of Red which you are hard-pressed to even notice a difference. One Sandstone which is, well, quite ugly in my opinion. And White. I do like some of them, but nothing is a really exciting or strong choice. I do understand this is just my stupid opinion. Everybody's taste in color selection and combinations is different. Hot Cherry Red with a Metallic "Burgundy" Red (like the current color) might make sense, but two reds that are so close to each other makes me think they had a lot of red paint and had to do "something" with it.

j) The Citadel is over-priced at the Sticker, and the Dealers act amazed when you say you actually want to buy one.
Add the features many of us want and you climb to over $52,000 -- including Delivery Fee, All Wheel Drive, Technology Group, Tow Package, HEMI, Captain's Chairs, Center Console for those chairs, Skid Plate, and CD Player. Granted, most Dealers are discounting to near Invoice Price -- but come on. It seems ridiculously high to me in 2014.

k) What a dumb idea for a Remote CD Player!
Single disk. Hidden under the arm rest. No built-in hard drive for storing songs (even the lowly Honda Pilot gives you that). And just try finding a third-party option that fits this vehicle. I cannot (if you know of one, please let us know). All of this for a whopping $450 List!! I'm so flattered. There really was no possible way to create a CD slot in the fancy dash infotainment cluster? I must be old-school,because when I mentioned this at a few Dealers the response was "Does anybody actually listen to CDs, anymore?" or "Sirius Radio should be enough, I should think."

THIS IS NOT A DODGE OR DURANGO-BASHING THREAD.
My intent is to voice my current level of frustrations. I still like the design very much. But not being able to actually view the Citadel on a Lot is frustrating. Being told the only interior color that anyone has is black is frustrating. Being told by a Dealer that the 2013 is "Exactly the same as the 2014" because they don't really have any 2014s on their Lot after inviting you to drive 30 miles to take a test drive is maddening. :wall:

Although every friend I have is telling me to avoid domestic vehicles, and one lifetime mechanic told me he put his kids through college "repairing Dodge vehicles" -- I'm still interested. But I may find myself heading over to foreign manufacturers after this. And then I picked up the very latest issue of Consumer Reports with their Reliability Ratings for vehicles... hoo-boy!! :(

It's listed on the R/T page as "(available)" so I'm hoping I won't get any bad news this morning at the dealership *fingers crossed*. People keep saying it's on hold. I just hope an order can still be placed with it.

Fleet Pricing? I had that thought, too. Just as an aside, if you order through a Fleet program you can actually remove the Third Row Seat if you never plan to use it.

I decided to abandon this pursuit tonight. There are just too many buyers, and none of the pricing is appealing to me. I will wait until the rush is over. Two dealers told me today that their allocations for a factory order are already used for November -- so I would have to wait until mid-December before they could place an order. That puts the vehicle in my hands in late January. I'm thinking, by that time, better angels might take pity on me and get me pricing I can live with.

#46 ·
I was told by my dealership that they couldn't order until their allocations opened up next month. But if you bug them enough (say you'll go to another one with allocations open), they may just do what mine did: he called his rep at Dodge and was given the go-ahead to place the order and I got the email from Dodge this morning. Regardless, if you order a vehicle, you won't be getting it the next week. I've seen people say eight to ten weeks at least--that's still over two months of waiting.

I gave in. After letting this bang around in my head for months, and getting surprised by the pricing -- I couldn't take it, anymore!
:wall:

I ordered my Durango tonight. :D

Citadel 4WD
Hemi
Technology Group
Captain Chairs
Center Console for 2nd Row
Tow Group IV
Skid Plate
Remote CD Player
Exterior: Sandstone
Interior: Light Frost Beige

MSRP: $52,115 with Freight, but without Doc Fees
Sale Price: $46,703, with Freight. I will owe $200 Doc Fees, Taxes and Tag Transfer Fees only.
Percentage of Discount from MSRP: -10.384% -- not quite the absolute best as reported by TrueCar, locally or nationally. But not the worst, either.

The Dealer -- whom I put through the wringer the last several weeks -- did not demand that I sign anything, nor that I even pay a deposit.

Really, what made me decide? Sometimes, you just gotta say "WTF!" -- and trust you made the right decision. That -- plus I calculated every which way I could and could not see how even a $2,000 discount affected the payment much. But in case you are wondering, cash back is almost always better than a lower interest offer on the loan.

My husband had to pay a $500 deposit on his Dart. They didn't ask for a deposit for the Durango. Bass Ackwards if you ask me.

#54 · (Edited)
Yes. The $46,703 includes Freight -- so it's $45,708 as I described (because Freight on every Window Sticker I've seen is actually $995). However, I later cancelled the Remote CD. I do try to be fair in making those comparisons -- if MSRP includes the Freight (as it will on your CarBargains Report), then I would declare the Selling Price with Freight included. I only owe Tags and Title fees.

On top of that, my entreaties to Chrysler / Dodge to send me a brochure finally resulted in a small surprise a few days ago. The brochure arrived with a Certificate referring to Program 39CE3, giving me another $500 "Bonus Cash Allowance". I'm waiting to see how that plays with the Dealer. I think delivery -- or, hopefully, only the deal, itself -- must take place by January 2, 2014 for that extra cash.

So get those requests in for a Brochure through their website, right now! :D

I was planning on hitting a dealer today to go for a test drive in a 2014 though the ice might make me replan. My list of wants is V8, tech, Nappa, Nav, rear DVD. My wife has adaptive Cruise control & it is great, so I think if i am sticking with a car for 5+ years, it should have all the toys i want.

Of course finding something with a DVD is not easy but I found a few from different dealers in my area.

Is the consensus that it should be 10% off MSRP in terms of a decent price?

Any ideas on timelines if ordered from the factory?

#56 ·
In my opinion, yes. Including the Destination Fee before the discount. Waiting time on an order seems to be stretching toward 6 weeks.

You can confirm a "fair" discount using TrueCar. It shows a range from how many people paid 10% below vs. How many paid $1500 above Sticker. Play with the chart settings. If you get 10% below you will be in a rare group but it does happen with regularity.

Shooting for over 20% below -- as one Member here claimed -- is a wild goose chase. He's never offered any proof he actually got that.

Final Pricing on My 2014 Durango Citadel...
in case it helps anyone. I picked mine up from the Dealer three days ago.

In the end, I decided to cancel the CD/DVD Player since it occupies too much of the center console. I will just have to convert my CDs to MP3s, I guess.

This is the Out-the-Door details, after all papers were signed and all negotiations were finalized.

MSRP: $51,665.00 including Destination Fee of $995
Invoice: $48,776.00
Dealer Discount: -$1,250
Sale Price: $47,526
Documentation Fee (Maryland): $200
Cash Incentive Rebate: -$1,000
Targeted Mail Rebate (Program: 39CE3): -$500
Sub-Total: $46,226.00
Taxes: $2,863.56 (calculated on Sale Price, plus Doc Fee x .06 = 6%)
Transfer of Tags / Title Fee (Maryland): $351
Total Delivered: $49,440.56 - includes everything

Calculated Difference from MSRP: -10.91% if you include Destination Fee ($51,665 : $46,026 -- does not include Documentation Fee)

Purchased at: Ourisman Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Bowie, MD
Sales Rep: Mike Hickerson
Sales Manager: Ron Ward
Financed thru: PenFed Credit Union @ .99% for 48 months

The Dealer bested pricing from...
PenFed's Buying Service (uses TrueCar, I believe)
CarBargains Buying Service (this was a real shock!)
TrueCar Participating Dealers
18 other Dealers I contacted in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, North and South Carolina. I did not check with Costco.

Virginia Dealers really crippled their chances by charging $499 Doc Fee, and wanting to charge a Maryland Buyer 6.5% Sales Tax instead of what our State collects -- which is 6%. And throwing in required oddities like Nitrogen-filled Tires and Service Agreements that I would never be able to use.

Above Vehicle Includes these Options...
HEMI
Technology Group
Skid Plate Group
Trailer Tow Group IV
Second-Row Fold & Tumble Captain Chairs
Second Row Console with Storage

Notes...
a) Targeted Mail Rebate -- I received this as a coupon after requesting a brochure online. You may need a unique Certificate Number from the front of that coupon, but they did not ask me for the actual Coupon. So request that brochure online at Dodge's website NOW! Mine took weeks to arrive.

b) Maryland calculates Sales Tax on Sale Price, plus Doc Fee -- and treats all other Factory Discounts or Factory Rebates as a "Down Payment". They apparently accept a Dealer Discount as a reduction in price.

c) I was so frustrated at one point that I went out looking for a 2013 Honda Pilot since I've owned 3 Hondas and liked them all. Every Honda Dealer quite literally REFUSED to quote by email or compete with other Dealers unless I would visit the showroom. I don't have time for that in this day and age. Why create a website with a "Click for Quote" link if you are never going to actually provide any kind of price?

d) EVERY Dodge Dealer was more than happy to quote -- except about 3 which simply never answered their email or Quote Forms one way or another. Why create a website with a "Click for Quote" link if you are never going to respond?

e) Factory Orders have one unique Advantage -- if you can be patient. You would get credit for any existing Factory Incentives at the Time of Order. Plus any that might increase before your vehicle arrives. The Dealers all said they would NOT deduct or eliminate the existing Incentives even if those disappeared by the time the vehicle arrived. I found that REFRESHINGLY REASSURING. It did not help me, in my case, but it was very reassuring. One thing to remember is that another $500 or $1,000 off does not affect the Payment greatly.

You don't need the brochure from Dodge to get the $500 bonus cash allowance. All I did was sign up for updates off Dodge's website and was emailed the offer (they sent it to me twice, actually; I guess to make sure I got it the first time). I didn't have to wait for it to come in the mail.

#59 ·
Mind sending one to me??? I signed up for email updates and also requested brochures through the mail and have received nothing yet. Used to get them all the time, now that I need one, no more mailings from Dodge.

Here we go, again. Another person claiming an unbelievable discount off a "fully loaded Citadel" -- which runs over $55,100, by the way. Take off the HEMI and you're still at $53,000+. I don't believe these claims -- and never will until you guys start showing copies of your receipts. Any Dealer offering that kind of discount is either non-existent or out-of-business.

Some of those really are far fetched unless they work for Chrysler itself...

What is your sales tax Rate??? $4207 in sales tax on what should be Sale price on top MINUS $8000 or $35373.29
None of the Math on this sheet looks normal. How do they come up with $40 k as cash price at end???

#76 · (Edited)
Look a few lines above that. Line 15 is the only one that matters and reads $48,000.
$40,000 plus $6,000 Down Payment plus $2,000 Rebate = $48,000 Total Paid (inclusive of fees).

I think these forms are purposely confusing.
$40,000 is the Financed Amount.

Sales Tax is based on Purchase Price of Car before Discounts. In Maryland, all Rebates are counted as "down payments" -- not as a "reduction in price" -- for example. Down Payments are included in the Sales Price calculation. The State doesn't care if you pay with cash or a check. You still owe tax.

#77 ·
Sales Tax is still way off, here in NJ we have 7% sales tax, At 48K your tax rate is a little more than 8.5% and you should only be paying tax on the difference in the sale price minus down payment
Uncle is right or close I believe.

Well, you did all the right things! I have so many friends and associates that laugh at me when I go through the buying process. I work as a Purchaser so I read these articles all the time on pitfalls. Two people declared "Hell, all I do is tell them I only want to pay so much per month and they always come around to my way of thinking." Then I find out they financed for 60 months or even 72 months to get there. I just say "Yeah... you held tough!! I'm not that strong, I guess." :p

I saw the USAA offer but am not Military. USAA has a stellar reputation.

The other big thing is Leasing. People see the numbers on TV and think they really CAN lease that car for "Only $359 a month!" They forget the $3,800 Due at Signing. Or the fact that it's usually the bottom tier for that model. And they never understand why you must negotiate as if you were buying it. In Maryland you also have to pay Sales Tax on the full Price -- not just the value of the Lease. That's a big rip-off by the State.

I don't know about their financing reputation, but their insurance is piss poor.

Maybe they're ok towards their own members, but to everyone else they're terrible. I got hit by one of their clients that ran a red light (she was obviously declared at fault) in May. They kept trying to put off fixing my Durango for a month, then said they wanted to total it for a new bumper and fender. I ended up having to file through my insurance and let them sue USAA (which they did successfully) and I'm still fighting with them to pay my medical bills. As soon as I mentioned to my doctor that it was USAA that was responsible for the medical bills he recommended that I get an attorney because he sees people having a hard time with them frequently.

My parents got rear ended by another one of their clients at a red light a couple years ago and didn't have any better of an experience with them. My brother had a policy with them while he was in the air force and dropped them because he said they screw people over all the time (this was well before myself of my parents had to deal with them).

Indy is in the insurance business, and I'm pretty sure it was him that said USAA is pretty well useless too.

My goodness! All I've ever read about them are Ratings concerning their fees. I, myself, have 21st Century and they've been great. My homeowners is with Travelers -- and they've been stellar with a huge $100,000 claim when a tree went through my roof last year. I cannot complain.

Glad we got that sorted out
WOW over 9% tax...
I guess here in North Jersey they get it back in our ridiculous property taxes

Yeah. That was all my mistakes. I felt really dumb, afterwards.

I think if people wait until the dead of Winter with no business in the Dealerships they might match branhart1123's success in negotiating. Around here that would be mid-February. Another thought -- just make an outright low-ball offer. I tried this and there wasn't a single dealer out of 15 or so that would budge. In fact, all the others came in at least $1,000 higher than what I eventually paid.

I feel your pain UNCLE. When we started looking, I wanted a White R/T AWD with trailer tow package and Navigation. I was flexible to a certain point. However, I did not want black or red, and I did not want the rear DVD entertainment system.

So when we started shopping for the Durango, we could not find what we were looking for. In a city of 4.5 million people and 10+ Dodge dealers in the Atlanta metro area, not one dealer had anything close to what we wanted. I would say 50% of the Durango's we saw were ordered with the rear DVD entertainment system. In this day and age, why would you spend nearly $2000 for that option when most kids have their smart phones, iPads, and tablets. Just a big waste of money in my opinion.

Long story short -Our MEGA dealer in Atlanta finally found a Durango we liked at a small Dodge dealership in Cleveland Tennessee, about 170 miles away. We ended up with a Limited AWD in Billet Silver (we actually ended up liking that color better than the white) with the HEMI V-8, Premium package, the Safety/Security & Convenience Package and trailer/tow package. With a sticker of $46,770 I ended up paying $41,110......$43,987 out the door.

Don't lose the faith. Definitely worth the time to find what you want. GOOD LUCK!!!
