Hello All, was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or just know what this is.

The ride- 2018 Durango GT. V6 AWD with 65K miles.

The problem- just started today, I was cruising in 8th gear at about 75 mph. Approximately every 4 seconds, it would feel like the engine was misfiring or the transmission cant find the correct gear. That’s the best way to explain it. Like a jerking or jolting feeling and it is really significant.

No check engine light or anything. Car has full power and no decrease in mpg.

I noticed throughout my 2 hour drive that it didn’t happen really when I switched over and solely used the “manual” gear selection. But once I switched back to full automatic and got back up to cruising speed it would start right back up with the issue.

I had a similar issue, no CEL on my 16 with the 3.6. it ended up being a bad coil. Admittedly, mine wasn't as constant as yours, but using the manual mode to keep the rpms up made it go away.

It did take me a long time to find it. It threw a code once, but then never did again for a couple months! The coil boot was actually the problem, it had burned through (see the picture). The main issue is that 3 of the plugs are covered by the intake... Not fun to get to (I have not taken it off mine yet, I'm kinda scared lol). Luckily my problem wasn't under there!

We had the 3.6 before our current 5.7. I did the plugs on it, yes trust me that intake sucks to remove!

The oem plugs are spec'ed for 100k. If your D was used commercially, and idles a lot, I could see plugs being an issue at an earlier point. As GTS points out, might be a coil issue. If you go into to check for that, I think I would go with new oem plugs just because, that way you should not have to do them again for quite a while.

Thanks. Yea it was a rental car in its previous life before me.

The left bank of plugs was terrible to get at, I got the plenum off, and it is doable. I think anyone with a little mechanic experience can do it. Look at the pic in one of my post.

Mine does this as well... intermittently mine will surge in 8th gear anywhere from 45-75mph when I am maintaining speed. Does it with cruise on, does it in sport mode, etc. .. and I have 6k miles on it...

My "guess" is that it is definably the trans. I have had it at the dealer a few times and get the blanket.. can not replicate. take Service Manager on a drive.. doesn't do it. they assure me they will flash the trans computer.. then the tech wont... its getting frustrating. Since its a "learning" trans I have hoped it would go away with longer drives.. I just put a few hundred miles on it driving to the beach, so I am hoping that has done something.
On top of it , I get the hard downshift to 5th.. I read it happens with the A/C on and I am able to confirm. I believe that there is a TSB for this one..
I plan to take it in with a complaint of the downshift and TSB and "hope" the surging in 8th will get taken care of.

The wife has had two jeeps, a 16 and now a 19 and have had no issues with them...

Thanks all, it’s been a week since I brought it to the dealership (they know I’m on vacation and won’t need my car for a month) with no answer but I’ll be calling tomorrow cause this is too long to wait for a simple answer I feel.

What's the Service Interval for the AWD system? Have you checked your Owner's manual. When was the last time the AWD was serviced? Never/Unknown? Start there.

When I had these same issues my Citadel was in service for 18 days, although we had extra stuff needing replacement like the water pump. Turns out the problem was the VVT system, and lower intake gasket.

So was told after 10 miles of driving they can’t find anything wrong… what sucks is I’m going to be driving it 6 hours to Washington DC soon. Going to pay the hourly rate for their best guess of “bad gas”.

LP3:
If it was mine, I would pull one or two of the more accessible plugs, and see what you have. If the gaps are worn, drop in a new set. If they look good, reinstall, and drive it. The fact that you have no CE or other warning lights is good.

I did not see this until now.. I just got back from the dealer... they ended up replacing the valve body. It really sucks that it took them three times to actually investigate it and do something but it is done.

Too bad they don't care about the cracked racetrack leaking water... and wasted my time before the 3/36 ran out....
