The 5.7L seems to spit somewhat more oil than normal into the PCV system.. different engines are different in this respect (e.g. the 4.7L PCV valve is in the oil filler tube, where there is no oil spray.. although in that case sucking the oil vapors up the filler tube led to the "brown sludge" non-issue)

I bought my D used with 40K miles on it. Would adding a catch can now be too little, too late? I imagine it's pretty dirty up in there. A catch can would prevent future build up, I'm sure, but at this point would it make a big difference?? Thanks.
 
CREWSIN install one now
No Issues last time I had oil changed they marked emptied catch can in notes.
No warrant issues

It depends how much vacuum the engine is pulling... as it's really not just "Positive Crankcase Ventilation" anymore when there's a vacuum line on it. Newer cam profiles for the tighter emission constraints (as well as VVT) surely have an effect as well.
