Well as a retired Chrysler employee I am disgusted with how the Durango ads say 6200 lb for towing.I just bought a new one and thought it would at least tow 3000-4000 lb, (I traded a 2010 Ram) 21000 miles for a vehicle that I cant tow my trailer with, even If I buy a new trailer that weighs 2300 lb , the tongue weight is over 350Lbs.I Was under the impression the Durango would at least pull a smaller trailer as I down sized for that reason.I did get the dealer to put the factory receiver and 4 - 7 pin plugs on it. I have written to Dodge telling them to give more info about towing so that others don't get screwed. I dont expect much joy though.

Did you not buy one with the tow package?

Yeah it seems as if you ordered the wrong Durango. The V6 with Tow should yank 2300lbs around like a rag doll

I have to agree, if you bought the Durango knowing that you'd be using it to tow. You should have got the tow package.

Sure you can add the hitch later, but you're still missing the heavy duty engine cooling, 180 amp alternator, full size spare, and load leveling shocks.

These components would be my guess as to why adding the hitch later only lets you tow 3500 pounds.

A lot of the guys here adding a hitch afterwards have the RT, which already includes everything from the tow package except the hitch itself.

It's not like the hitch is going to fall off if you tow 5k, but it might be sagging in the rear and overheating.

I have a 2014 3.6 AWD DURANGO, I am towing a trailer that weighs about 4000 lbs loaded, I dont have the tow package but have the factory trailer hitch and wiring put on by the dealer. I know the book says 3500 lb and a tongue weight of 350lb with out towing package, do you think I will need a trans cooler or the heavy duty engine cooler.

I have a 2015 Limited V6 w/ NO tow package. I added the factory hitch and am towing a 21' boat (5000 lbs) with no issues. Plenty of power and no sagging in the rear.
I went by one of my local Dodge dealerships and asked them how much to add a towing package and was quoted over 1600.00 for parts. He was sure on labor but I know it would be over 2 grand total once they finished. Dies that sound reasonable or are they trying to sell me a new Durango?

Unless they were planning to add the transmission cooler and new rear shocks, that is way out of line. Like wataboy, I spent about $300 in parts - hitch, wiring harness, cover - now I just need to get off my butt and install it. Supposed to be nice weather this weekend...

Sounds like they were including load leveling shocks
