Adding a spare tire

My biggest complaint with my brand new '21 DDSRT is that it doesn't have a compact spare. The omission was (partly) my fault: I instructed the salesman to option one but didn't notice that he forgot to include it in my order.

Man of action that I am, I scoured this forum for information and started collecting the parts necessary to add the spare myself. So far, I've received everything but the heatshields, which I had to order from a dealer. I understand that they're being shipped by canoe from China.

Now, days before my family and I depart on our annual 1,500 mi. journey to grandma's house, I'm wondering if anyone has attempted to mount the compact spare without first installing the heatshields. Perhaps there's a quick and easy half-measure I could take to protect the tire until the OEM shields arrive? I'm in NYC, so fabrication is probably out of the question.

I appreciate the help.

So...what if I DO have the compact spare option? Will a full size spare fit? Can i buy the extra 20 x 10 wheel and a tire and mount it where the compact spare goes? I've been wondering about this. Mine is a TNG but should be the same underneath.

On my 2016 RT the owners manual lists my “full size” spare as 18x8 245/65/R18 and I don’t recall the offset. This will not fit over my Brembos front or rear without a spacer.

The “compact” spare found on JGCSRT/JGCTH/DDSRT/DDHC/DDRTT&G is 20x6.5 195/70/R20. Pretty pricey: 2016-2021 Mopar Wheel 68363402AB | My Mopar Parts

A full size 20x10 295/45/20 spare will fit under the Durango but it will hang down farther leaving you less clearance between the road. I decided NOT to mount my full size spare just yet because I want to make a protective cover out of ABS so road debris doesn’t ruin the face of my aftermarket wheels especially since I’m on lowering springs.

this is what I'm really curious about. how much lower does it hang? would it be noticeably lower than the exhaust? and would it look really silly if it does hang that low?

I checked my notes and I wrote down that the 20x10+50 295/45/20 full size spare hung down 1.75” further (closer to the ground) than the full size spare. It is also quite noticeable when looking from the rear as if you were driving you’d see it sticking lower than the rear bumper.

It fits just fine up in the spare location without having to modify anything like the plastic heat shield in question. I just didn’t like it hanging so low to the ground especially when I’m lowered without any protection.

It will be ok without it temporarily. Tires are made to hold up to heat. Plus, while you are driving in winter weather, it shouldn’t get too hot. My son has a Dakota RT and he had a duel exhaust ran around the spare tire. It doesn’t have a heat shield and it’s fine.

The space is the same so all full size spares will fit. The compact will just be higher up.

Hi Awehlage, thanks for the information. We just got an rt with the 295 tires. Was looking at replacing the donut spare with a 5fh pirelli. From your posts it seems its a fit but hangs 1.75" lower. If you do not mind, please could you post some pics of how it looks from behind, I searched your build but was not able to find. Thanks I advance
