I live on the side of a mountain at 9500 feet in Colorado. My Durango fills all my needs and is one of my all time favorite vehicles I have owned.

My wife is disabled so it offers the size and 4 WD reliability I need plus so plush and comfortable. I have to haul a trailer with a 250 gallon water tank from time to time from the valley back up here. I am 82 so not a speed demon especially with a trailer. Coming back up the mountain it would not downshift properly. I
had my wife with me, no cell phoneservice in the canyon so I kept going-mistake big time! The computer shut the car own-so my mechanic said-and I had the car towed down the mountain to town. The mechanic said the engine is blown although it did not seize up. Aproxximate quote for Jasper rebuilt engine installed is around $11,000.00

The car is in great shape and set up just how we needd to accomodate my wife's needs.. I was having some minor computer issues with not shifting properly occasionally. But all in all a great vehicle. My question to the forum is whether to go with new engine or look for another vehicle? Remeber, I am 82, VERY fixed budget and car is paid for.

Thanks for everyone's input. Also sorry for spelling errors

I bet for 11 grand you could get a 2014 Durango with less than 100k shipped to your house. (Or somewhere in a local town)

Then just swap out all the parts your wife needs from the old Durango into your new Durango.

Look for used Cars in AZ and around Sacramento. For some reason they don't rust in those areas.

After you get the new car working spend some time getting the old car working yourself and sell it off. In the end it will only cost you 2-3k.

What are the exact symptoms that the mechanic can give that support a blown engine? This doesn't smell right.

X 2 on more detailed assessment as well as a 2nd opinion! Is this the 3.6L engine?
