Hi guys,

I had the dealer install a rear view camera to our black, blacktop durango RT today. But after the installation I noticed that the dodge name bar on top of the license plate is now chrome instead of the black body color that it was before. The parts said he can only order the rear view camera assembly in chrome.
The service manager said they will look into it more to see what they can do to maintain the black monochromatic paint scheme of our durango.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Here is picture after the camera install.

I think they rushed you through. The chrome trim is dedicated to all the other D models, painted is specific to the R/T and Rallye. Obviously they did not inform you the modification would change a significant piece of trim from painted to chrome. I would complain and see what happens.

Good luck!!

They F-Up make them fix it. Blacktop comes with the black molding.

They are fixing it tomorrow. But the fix was the one that I suggested. The parts guys fix was to decal it. Then I proceeded to ask them if we can reuse the part that they removed when they installed the camera assembly. The mechanic, Parts guy and me spent five minutes removing the black dodge appliqué from the assembly they removed and they will replaced that chrome piece with that body color piece. Problem solved.
I will have to confirm from the service manager tomorrow that they will not charge me for fixing their own lack of foresight and ingenuity.

So the blacked out R/T version is a sticker over top the chrome that is used on all of them??

if so, very interesting.

It's not a sticker. The parts guy suggested the sticker idea. It's actually a whole plastic piece painted like the body color with about 8 clips that holds it down the plate/camera assembly. With a screw driver and extra hands, it took us 5 minutes to separate the two pieces.

I've wondered about this very thing....I've got a '13 sxt blacktop and it came with the rearview mirror that has the screen built into it for a camera. I wondered if the replacment panel for the camera was black like it should be. can you post a closeup of the finished product to see how the camera integrates with the stock black dodge trim?

Just like this picture above the camera is located right under the "D" on the blacked out logo and right above the Illinois on my license plate. I will take a picture tomorrow. So basically the camera assembly comes only with a chrome dodge name plate. So what I did was to remove the black body color name plate from the picture above and had them remove the chrome name plate from the camera assembly and put back in the black one. Looks 100% better.
By the way, my camera is integrated into the touch screen uconnect head unit.

Hello, first post. My wife and I just bought a 2013 R/T, and we love it. However, it has the Uconnect RBZ without a backup camera. I'd like to add the factory camera and have it integrated with the touch screen.

So, I looked up the parts and realized that they only sell the camera with in the chrome as stated in this thread. My R/T has a black plate on the liftgate. This seems ridiculous that they only sell the chrome, but it is what it is.

Question: if I buy this camera

How exactly do I get the black cover off of my current plate onto the new camera plate?

And once I install it myself, how easily will the dealer be able to reconfigure it so it will work? My experience is that dealers are not easy to work with.

I found these instructions that seem complicated but certainly do-able. What's everyone's opinion? Thanks in advance.

Fairly easy to replace the chrome nameplate with the blackname plate. There are 8 tabs/clips that hold them to the camera frame assembly. All you have to do is instruct the dealer mechanic that is what you want done. I actually helped the mechanic separate the black nameplate from the non-camera frame assembly. Then they did the rest for me.
But you can't remove the black nameplate if the whole assembly is still attached to the durango tailgate. Just instruct the mechanic to swap the nameplate before they install the one with the camera.

Thanks. Do you mind mentioning how much the dealer charged for the camera and install? I'm torn between doing it myself and having the dealer do it.

I generally dislike having the dealer do anything, but I'm a little nervous about doing this myself given all the potential electric problems.

Orangedive,

I had the dealer split the cost with me when we took delivery of the durango. I told them that my wife was so disappointed that there was no back-up camera. They agreed, so we split the $500.00 cost of materials and labor 50/50. We paid $250 including the mess they did with the chrome logo to black logo.

Wow. That's a great deal. The Mopar camera assembly itself costs $285 online. Thanks for the info.

I just had my dealer install the backup camera on my 13 R/T, labor was $237.50, printed out a 10% coupon off dodge.com and brought it down to $214, not too bad for not having to deal with the wiring myself. Had them switch out the chrome nameplate as well and used my factory color matched one.
