Looks like there are a lot of people in this thread who want to complain and wait for it to happen so they can pony up a grand at the dealer; and a lot less who want to prevent it from happening altogether.

BTW those aren't gnats in the racetrack, they're pieces of gasket

There's nothing wrong with people going to the dealer expecting a replacement on a warranty.

Even though I still have a warranty on my vehicle, i took it upon myself to just put a bead of silicone around the gaskets and it did the trick.

I hate dealing with dealers THAT much.

I went through an auto car wash opened the hatch and water pored out the bolt hole. The bolt on the center race track was removed to allow water to drain based on info from the forum . No more auto car wash it forces water in the light assembly the middle section is starting to fade in one area. I'm starting to see a lot of them driving with failed lights . Acura had a recall on there vehicles back to 2014 due to lights going dark from water intrusion Dodge should step up to the plate and cover them I bet they only cost 50 to 100 each but they sell them for way to much.

Maybe on some. but--- Trust me.
Granted, I sat-out the Eastern 130MPH sustained eye wall of Hurricane Irma in my driveway. 12" of horizontal downpour within 38 hours with absolutely NO water infiltration ---- but I dang sure got critters in there.

Hi guys, so I definitely had dead insects in my taillight. Like atravis42, I taped my taillight in mid-December 2018 with a tape and it still looks good, but most of all, it's wonderfully tight and without moisture. Yesterday I saw a Ford Edge, which seem to have the same problem. Perhaps even comes with such lights that spread over the entire rear, which does not withstand the tail light of the frequent vibration when hitting the tailgate.

The dealer replacing it doesn't fix it though, because they are just replacing the inoperable light with another just like it with the same gasket that will waterlog and allow water into the LED track

I get it, but they are obviously not going to remedy the situation since they probably have known that it's been a flaw since at least 2015.

2016 Durango currently at 40,000 miles. Dealer said its not under warranty. Found this thread in search of a solution. Dealer was quoting $1,400. I submitted the info on NHTSA. I dont want to pay for a new light and then have it fail again. Extremely frustrating. I shouldnt have to pay for this anyway. Lots of posts here, still reading all of them at the moment.

well the sh!t has finally hit the fan with my D's racetrack. the tag lights failed a long time ago but I got them to pass it for inspection. now shop is saying they cant pass it and race track has to be replaced ($1500) has anyone had any luck getting dodge to replace this under warranty?

You have documentation of a failed safety inspection due to racetrack taillight failure?? While this surely draws vacuum, This might help ALL victims, past, present, and future! Have you filed an official complaint with the NTHSA?
That would be my next step, if I were you. Personally, I STILL 'have no dog in this fight' after 2 years and one hurricane. But here, you have documentation of a failed safety inspection -- ON PAPER. BAM! (mic-drop)

I still contend that this is a SAFETY issue, therefore, FCA should've been compelled by the NTHSA to address this in 2012!

What if we all file NHTSA claims and push FCA into a recall?

They don't work that way because complaints require individual VIN numbers.. But there is nothing to prevent anybody afflicted with safety issues from filing a complaint of their own with them.

i'm taking the D to the dealer I bought it from tomorrow to see if they will pass it, stay tuned!

Add us to the list. We even have ours garaged but a guess a rain storm or car wash got the better of it. Really ticked off about it. The lower side on the passenger side of the track is now dimmer and it's annoying. This is just poor lazy design and disregard by FCA to step up and fix the problem their negligence caused. Put out a good product - that's why imports are slowing putting domestic out of business.

I would advise you to either remove the two outer nuts, drill drain holes as described in this thread, or both to get that water out. If it sits in there, the leds will fail soon.

so I bring the D into the dealer on saturday for inspection. tech comes in waiting room and says both tag lights out we have one in stock. i say put it in ($40) and they do. now it passes. get it home and the new light isn't working  it is now at my custom shop getting an illuminated license plate frame installed
