Been lurking here since January of this year since I bought a 2013 R/T AWD. Well, we hit a HUGE pot hole yesterday. As you can see it appears that the strut is bent. The drive shaft appears to be rubbing on the bottom of the strut. My wife drove it home, but now I don't want to drive it to the dealer but may have to get it towed. Anybody have any experience with this type of repair?

Potholes are a major cause of vehicle/tire/wheel damage. I would have the tire and wheel inspected at the same time. If not damaged to where you can find something now, be prepared for the tire to blister later on from a break in the side wall or tread area. Wheel could also be bent. You're right in having it towed as further damage can result.

I sent my mechanic some pictures and he's checking into getting the whole strut assembly to replace. Looks like the strut collapsed and is rubbing the cv joint. Dealer doesn't have it in stock and is having to order it.

There was a huge pothole on the street I work on, which a couple people hit and had their cars damaged. They were able to file claims with the DOT and get reimbursed for the damages, granted they still had to pay up front.

It could be a state road or a city street. That will control who to contact, but a lot of people do this to get some help in expense.

I tried that route with one of the towns here in Ohio when we smacked an unavoidable pot hole in my wife's old car. The city's insurance company said that the if I could prove negligence on the city's part then I'd be reimbursed. City came back and said that "this is normal wear and tear to our roads and is not deemed negligent." Whatever...cost me a new tire. Ironically, the city sent out a work crew the next week to repair the 237498237482346438 pot holes on that stretch of road.

In nys they have a law that they are not responsible for pot hole damage from oct-may it limits the amount they pay out during that time. Also it allows them time to repair it the hole in a timely matter once reported .
First person who reports it never gets paid every one else after that has a chance to get paid.
