Car and Driver also ranked the 2015 Durango against the 2016 Pilot and the Durango came out on top. It will likely come down to personal preference in the end. Having owned the last three models of Pilot and a 1st gen Durango, I can say I'm not disappointed with my decision to give the Durango another shot. My first gen Durango was riddled with problems from day one. In fact, I left it for the Pilot. The Durango has come a long way and is a worthy competitor. I opted for the R/T for the V8 and ride quality, but again, you may like something different. Definitely test drive both and let us know what you choose either way.

Well, in all fairness, both will look horribly outdated in 10 years
Not necessarily. Many designs, while obviously not 'new', don't necessarily look dated. The C6 Corvette was introduced in 2005 and it doesn't look dated. Neither does a Dodge Magnum. The new Challengers will not look dated in another 3 years when they hit the 10 year mark. Likewise, I think our Durangos will hold up well. Generally speaking, anything utilitarian will look dated after a time while anything designed with tasteful style and graceful lines will age very nicely.

Thanks ALL for taking the time to share your point of view and opinions.

Driving is important to me - I drive a BMW 530 wagon with 6 sp manual (that I'd really like to replace with a Charger SRT 392:thumbsup:). I loathe the Sienna we currently have so am trying to bridge the gap between what my wife wants and what I'm comfortable driving.

We will definitely drive both, as I'm a bit concerned that the r/t ride will be too firm for my wife - that's why I was thinking Rallye to sport up the standard suspension.

Ah, so you're not a smart man? You're choosing an inferior vehicle, knowing it will break down, cause trouble, and cost more in the long run? I say don't waste your time or hassle with the Durango. Get the Pilot. That's what the smart man would do, right?
I didn't say the smart man doesn't buy the Durango. I said the smart man recognizes that the Honda will be more reliable. Also, eating kale and nuts for every meal is super healthy. Most of us choose not to eat kale and nuts for every meal. That doesn't make us dumb, it makes us selective.

With this revelation, you will loathe the Pilot and love the Durango.

I don't agree. Honda used to be known for reliability but have faltered. Not everything they do is gold. No matter, really. Any vehicle can be a lemon.

With this revelation, you will loathe the Pilot and love the Durango.
And on this we can agree.

You're a Magnum fanboy. Of course you think that. ;) The new Challengers did look dated but the wonky really new ones are still fresh (but do take me back to the Intrepid that was replaced by the Magnum-years Charger. I thought the gen 1 D and the 94 Ram were totally fresh and cutting edge, but alas they are dino's now. I actually think midyear Corvettes still look modern and were far ahead of their time. But then, I'm old! The gen 3 D will age out someday, sooner than 10 years I fear.

I hate minivans, but I really did not like how the 16 pilot looked. My wife doesn't mind my Durango but will not drive one daily. So she got a new sienna and I have to admit it's not that bad at all. Good luck!

Everyone's preferences and needs are different. Get what you really want, and you can't go wrong.

Having said that...

I feel qualified to respond because I had the same choice to make between the Pilot and the Durango. My wife and I are long-time Honda fans. Around 2012-2013 I really wanted a new Pilot, but I wanted to wait for the next-gen model. I waited. And waited. And waited. Finally the debut! Summary excerpt - Pro: I liked the Pilot's panoramic sunroof. Con: The Pilot's rear end was butt ugly (no pun intended). Within four weeks time I placed a factory order for my D, built just how I wanted. 2000 miles later, driving my R/T is still one of the best parts of my day.

This thread is another example of why we're not all driving white Corollas.

Different vehicles have different targets, though the marketing people don't like to point that out.

if you are about pointA-to-pointB with a bunch of people. sienna/odyssey/town&country work fine.

If you look forward to getting into YOUR vehicle at the end of the work day, or if you look forward to getting into YOUR vehicle at the airport after a week on the road/air, then the vehicle becomes more important.

So, for example: heading home from the get-together Detroit last August, looking at 750 miles ahead of me.. I said "let's go!"

vehicles mean different things to different people..

Seen the pilot up close and it looks like a bigger crv nothing special honda bland like everything they make and sell.
I hate when people say Hondas are reliable cuz I can't count how many accord and oddessy trans I've replaced.
This includes tls as well. I freaking hate those car and would never let any one I love or care for buy one of them.
The v6 trans were hit or miss cuz I know people who had more then one factory trans break while others went for ever.
They have gotten better but they break like everything else.

My brother has a Pilot (2010 maybe?) I have a durango... he likes my Durango better!!!

Let's face it. This is 2015. I get the idea of people wanting Honda or Toyota. But why would you decide not to at least enjoy owning a D, get some compliments on your truck especially based on the sharp looks. I tell you the D's reliability is not bad if only because I never intend to own a vehicle for 20 years. Support made in America. Get on the bandwagon. Please enjoy the pride that the D will bestow upon you. I guarantee you will love it.

I had never considered a Dodge..ever. I didnt even know what a Durango was 18 months ago. I didnt put them on my list of SUVs to consider when starting down the path to looking to replace my loaded Xterra.

I just happened upon a Sunday newspaper ad for a dealership down the street.. they had an offer that looked decent. I checked out the review by Consumer reports, and it had much of what was causing me to cross off most of the SUVs I'd considered (had to be at least a V6, had to have RWD, had to have enough room to haul weekend warrior DIY stuff)..

Plus, it was their TOP RATED Large SUV...

I took one test drive and stopped looking. Done. Sold.

I've mentioned this before; I'm not a "car guy".. havent had an interest in it since my first car when I was 17.. I knew nothing about mechanics, or cars other than "put gas in, turn key, push on floor sticks with feet"..

But the D is just proving to not only be a workhorse, but a helluva lot of fun to drive, and a pretty sweet ride at that.

I'm not a "car enthusiast"... I'm a "Durango Enthusiast".

You know, your statement actually resinates with me. I am a car guy and i love them and have owned well over 40 of them in my short 15 years of driving, but I have never been as active or as passionate as i am with the Durango. This Durango is only my second Red vehicle and I never was a big fan of Red until I saw the Redline red Durango. I believe Clifford chose me rather than me choosing him. I have gone completely insane over this Durango and I don't see that changing any time soon.

We drove every single almost every single SUV when shopping for the replacement kid hauler. Both my wife and I agreed (it could happen) that the Durango drove the best. I was really disappointed in the pilot. It was the previous generation, but man it felt cheap inside and rode rougher than the D. It didn't even have a passenger armrest! The Durango rides smooth, has a sporty feel, is super comfortable for me and lots of 3rd row room. The interior of the D is a nice place to spend time, I love driving it.
