after 108,000 miles, the torque convertor went on my D and decided to take the tranny with it. Started getting some hesitation between 1st and 2nd this spring. Maybe I could have saved the tranny if I ran it right down to the Stealer, but ignored it hoping it was something simple. replaced some things and it didn't get much worse so I continued towing my 6,000 lb camper around all summer. Bad choice and now my D is in for open heart surgery.

After weighing my options, I decided to go to a local shop. Martin Saine was my first choice, but the shipping would have been a killer along with the install. Heavy D gave me a good price for his extra one, but no warantee and a $600 bill to install it, the choice was made for me. $2400 to remove, rebuild and replace locally. The place was recommended to me by 4 different people with rave reviews. After talking with them, I went for it.

I'll be getting a heavy duty Torque convertor for towing. They ream the valve bore and sleeve it to remove the wear on the shifting valve. They had a Ram in there that plows and tows and he's getting the same build. The guy that owns the place knows his stuff and I'm sure my D will be up and running better than new in no time. It's supposed to be done next week. I didn't have an appointment when I dropped it off and it's an extra vehicle for me so I'm not in a major hurry. (that and the $2400 bill waiting at the end)

Say a prayer for my D to have a speedy recovery.

Oh crap.

At nearly 200k miles on mine, I wonder what mine looks like? Service this fall said nothing negative as they adjusted the bands, changed the filter, etc. Ouch!

if you have adjusted the bands? yours is very close to mine right now. I saw a new band and the material can't be much more than a tenth of an inch?

With our style of tranny it's inevitable that it'll get rebuilt. I'd kill for an allison for our rigs. Kinda like what we get in the 4.7 rigs. Way better tranny. Bands are just so old school.

I'm shocked that with the level of wear in the entire unit that it even moved. The bands were gone 2 years ago, so were the teeth on that inner gear. There isn't anything there on half of the entire part.

It's a real testament to the design that it moved at all. THAT is why old-school is sometimes better than anything newly designed. I couldn't imagine a non-mechanical/CPU controled unit even responding to commands in that condition.

Kudos Dodge! Old but tried and true.
