I haven't used a radar detector in a really long time but would like to get one for the Durango. Which ones are you guys using .

There is no substitute....the Valentine One.

My foot isn't as heavy as it used to be years back...but I'll never be without one.

Range and direction finder are what sold me on one years ago....I'm on my 2nd in the last 15 years (1st one I sold with a vehicle).

I agree with Doc, I love my V1...and thanks for recommending it. I retired my Passport 8500 x50 for the V1. I do not know how I lived without the directional warnings and bogey counter before. That being said, I have had the new GM collision avoidance systems render my V1 almost useless in the K band. When I come up on a new Tahoe I will have 2-3 K band readings maxed out. When this happens I have to keep an eye out for an additional contact, if the reader hits 4 or 5 different radar signals then something else is out there. With my Passport I would have no idea how many different signals were out there, or in which direction they were. Any one else having a problem with collision avoidance systems?

i run a 9500ix, so far so good! i mean all the top tier detectors will be leaps and bounds over say a $100 detector. So anything like a v1, escort etc will be good!
I run a a escort smartradar in 2 of my other cars for the discreet look, that and i paid under $200 for each of them.

You really need to know what type of radar is being used in your area to make the best pick.
The Redline was designed for truckers who needed max range..but its downfall I believe is on Laser detection.

The V1 provides I believe the best Laser range which is the primary weapon of choice with the local police and state troopers in Atlanta, plus it has excellent range of all other bands.
Once you have the arrows..I don't know how you can go back to anything else.

The V1 does have excellent laser detection but it's a mute point because just as your V1 is alerting you to laser the LEO is already writing your ticket.

Its personal preference. If you're out there going 20-25 over the limit alot your going to get caught...its a certainty. If you push it on occasion then you want range first and sensitivity second...I like the Val 1's ability to catch radar from behind and sides and the threat counter.

I will not say I have been 100% saved by the Val 1...only because I rarely push it. I'm usually in the gray area of 8-12 over and that's not even too often. I've slowed down in my old age :) It has notified me more than a mile out when I was 9-10 over the limit...and I've never been stopped for speeding with it. Only stop with a Val One in my car was for tint...and I got off with a warning as I knew the officer....and he never saw it as I had the visor flipped down.

Go with what you want after doing research...there is plenty online.

I had my Val 1 hard wired (comes on with ignition) for $50 by a local shop that I've done business with before.

I was going to go with the blendmount but it really sticks out and was a bit spendy. I custom made my own mount and installed it under the screw for the sun visor then bent it to the windshield. A small square of locking velcro on the windshield (on the 35% eyebrow tint) makes it rock solid and invisible for the most part.

When I fold the sun visor down (if I get passed by an officer or get stopped this is what is seen:

Be wary of that...laser jamming is 100% illegal and if your caught with it could be very problematic.

Edit: The issue with actual laser "jamming" is that you're sending a signal out...this is the issue. Detectors only "detect" things coming in.
Sending signals out are a no-no and are hence...illegal.

Just FYI.

Kinda looks like a cheap blendmount. Ok if your mission is to plop your RD right in plain view.

I use the Escort Passport, with Blendmount and mirror wire tap for power .. works great nice clean install and looks custom ... what more could you ask for.

Seeing as nearly all law enforcement use lasers now to detect speed (lasers that they can point at any portion of the car front or rear) aren't these radar detectors big useless paper weights?

I never understood why people buy these things..even in the ancient days of radar detectors I'm assuming it's too late once it goes off.

In my part of California at least, a few years ago they were using laser everywhere. Now I haven't seen a single cop pulled over using it in the last three years or so. They seem to have reverted back to radar for some reason. I've take trips all across California lately and haven't seen it used in other cities either, so not sure if it's state-wide or not.
