Well, she's gone

Yup, had to junk the Durango the other day. She was an 01 that we bought brandy new off the lot. We had a blast with her over the years. Took her all over for the kids sports, many different states, areas, all in style with power. My youngest son loved it so much he begged us to take it to the prom a few years ago and of course we let him. After awhile we wound up giving him the Durango and he drove it into the ground. She lasted a good long time and towards the end was used hard. My son took her fishing almost every weekend and put her through her paces getting to all the best spots in the woods down here in the sticks. I have no problems that he drove her like he did, that's how all vehicles should end their time, with nothing left. When the flatbed came to get her my wife actually cried. Anyway, no point to this, just wanted to share our experience with you all and thank those of you who helped me with keeping her on the road over the years.

Sadly no. When we gave the rig to my son we bought a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon unlimited that we like alot as well. The Jeep however doesnt ride near as nice or have anywhere near the power the Durango had. I understand the newer Durangos have tons of power and probably ride better then our old 01 but I think, and this is just MHO that the first generations looked unbelievable. Anyway she has the Rubi now and I bought a brandy new Power Wagon last summer so we should be good for awhile. (The Power Wagon is truly a beast by the way.)

Condition. Engine started blowing smoke, four wheel drive just recently broke, needed tires, broken exhaust manifold bolt, radiator leaking, needed new water pump. I was originally going to start picking at some of the things until the four wheel drive stopped working when he got stuck in a mud hole a little while ago. It sucks too because within the last year I replaced the rear springs, u-joints, front drive shaft and put a flo master exhaust system on her. Oh well, she was a great truck.

12 years is a healthy life, especially when the kids took over.

On going, general and advanced maintenance is a God-send when 12 years becomes 16 and 16 becomes 20. The value returns multi-fold. Use the adage that "if you have to take an old XYZ off, put a new XYZ on in its place" and your vehicle will last seemingly forever.

Once repairs are out of control, it's done at that age.

Agreed. It got away from me the last few months. Pretty much from late spring until now. My son works 5 sometimes 6 days a week and of course when he's not working he's not home and when he's not home he's using the truck for what it was meant for. That being said there was just a point of diminishing returns, especially when the transfer case took a dump. On the other hand I bought a 98 Dodge Pickup 1500 4X4 in September of 97 and I gave that to my oldest son last year. It has well over 100000 miles on her now and still (knock on wood) running like a champ. I really kept up with that rig because it was the first new vehicle I ever bought for myself. That's had, within the last two years many, many repairs i.e. brake lines, trans cooler lines, water pump, radiator, timing chain and belt, ball joints, wheel bearings, plugs, cap, rotor, u-joints, brandy new 35's, (I put a 3" lift on it a few years ago in my driveway) new rims, and the list goes on. I'm gonna put new brakes and rotors on it this weekend. That's been an outstanding rig for the last 16 or so years.
