Uconnect Box Requires Service / Troubleshooting and Fix

A few months ago I purchased a very expensive car that began to throw a very annoying error into my face since the first month of ownership: "Uconnect Box requires service. Please visit an authorized dealer."

Image

As a naive fool I visited my stealership to claim my warranty and got some insulting experience where a manager performed a small shitshow:
  1. Without looking at the car said that I probably modded something, so they won't cover anything.
  2. Short time after he came again and said they suspect tricky hackers were trying to steal my car with very serious tools.
  3. Claimed they found a problem and fixed it, but the error came back on my next trip.

Long story short, there's a way to troubleshoot this error on any driveway.

Firstly, let's start with the basics. The error "Uconnect Box requires service" means nothing, it actually hides a real reason and displays a generic error for ANY problem that happens inside your telematics box. A telematics box (or TBM2) is a device that is installed above your glove box and sends/receives data to Chrysler-affiliated servers through the LTE antenna without your control over it. It also works as an adapter for the GPS cable that comes to your radio unit from the roof. So whenever a problem happens with your TMB2 (e.g. a signal with a cell tower is lost), you'll see a "Uconnect Box requires service" error message.

Secondly, you need some tools to debug your car. You can use something like AlfaOBD, DiagFCA or JScan. Their price (+ a scanner device by their recommendation) should cost no more than 100 bucks. However, I'm not affiliated with these products, so I can't guarantee their price policy in the future. I used DiagFCA + Vgate vLinker FS for screenshots below to explain how I diagnosed the problem with my TBM2 module.

I connected my cable to the laptop, installed the diagnostics software, connected the scanner cable to the OBD port under the steering wheel column. Then I opened the "Diagnostic" tab and scrolled the list down to the TBM2 module (aka telematics box). You can see on the screenshot below there are 3 columns with names "Active", "Pending" and "Stored" and any non-zero values in these columns indicate issues that present right now or happened in the past:

Then I clicked on TMB2 module and went to the DTCs tab to see actual error codes. In my case that was B1560-13 (Cellular Antenna 1 - Circuit Open), but other owners may have slightly different codes:

After that I found a document with a name S2108000085. It's a TSB that explains where the TBM module is located, how it looks, how to test connectors and where wires are put in your car. So I grabbed my trim removal set, ratchet wrench socket set and went to my car. I gently removed the weatherstrip and a bunch of panels and eventually dropped the frame of my glove box. You can see that the telematics box is sitting on the top of it:

I inspected cable connectors on the back and was initially sure that my problem is the connector #3 if we count from left to right. But after poking around, I confirmed it works OK, just looks bad. My problem was the cable #4: I removed connectors one by one when the engine was off, then I started the car and scanned errors to see if I get new errors. When I removed the connector #4, I didn't get any new errors but B1560-13, so I understood that this cable is my problem.

Then I decided to find the opposite part of this cable. It didn't look like it goes to the radio unit, so the only place where it can go is probably the fin on the roof. I dropped a few panels and found this blue connector:

I wiggled it a little bit and my next error scan came clean, so I understood that my problem is a loose connection between two wires in this blue adapter/splitter. I used a zip tie to stop movement of both halves and so far it works for 3 weeks since then, the error never came back.

I hope this information will save someone's time because I see a huge amount of people on forums like this that are waiting for mysterious Uconnect updates that can't fix hardware issues like the one above.

So that means you have read through the forum to find that the '21 FUConnect is horrid? That error can sometimes be a bad box, (the dealer always thinks so unless they say nothing is wrong) and sometimes it can be cables loose on the back of the radio. If it's neither of those then there is a later software upgrade floating around on this forum from '23 that several have used to fix most of the problems with this radio.

Be careful on the 23 firmware as it still has stupid bugs such as your channel favorites get skipped when cycling through. YOU have to re-save the skipped channel for it to work again.
Also once you have 12 or more saved channel favorites you will get an error each additional saved channel. The error says (paraphrase) you have reached the maximum saved channels but you just tap OK and it saves anyway. Weather does not work, period. Navigation is now dark theme which with the latest firmware it is not too bad but be aware of it especially if you like a lighter theme.
Last but certainly not least. (LOL) You may lose your helmets in the hvac controls. Beyond that, the 23 firmware is better then previous versions but it's still pathetic that regression testing does not exist with UC5 programmers and such blatant bugs are allowed to pass QC.

Lastly, firmware upgrades to the Radio does not fix the uconnect box error and I have not seen an owner able to get a firmware upgrade for the uconnect box but I may have missed it.

I’m in the same boat here with this uconnect box error. I’ve read through a lot of this and to my understanding there isn’t really a fix. It’s so intermittent that I’m not sure if a trip to the dealer will get me anywhere (although I have one scheduled next week). I just bought this (21 DD) a few weeks ago as a CPO. Hopefully there is a fix before my 3 month warranty is up.

CPO is a much longer warranty than 90 days.

It's time we start calling it what it is - even with the @DodgeCares folks. Dodge has totally left 2021 model year owners in the cold with this piece of garbage. I can't tell if the newer models are any better, or whether people just stopped talking about it. But one thing is for sure. Dodge and Uconnect never delivered what they sold us with this unit, and it continues showing failure modes which they cannot (or more likely choose not to) solve. I firmly believe that every single 2021 owner deserves an extended warranty on their Uconnect system. Because clearly, if you haven't had the dreaded "Uconnect box requires service" message yet, you will. I'm one of the lucky ones who have only seen it a few scattered times in 2 1/2 years. Plus, when mine has done it, I've been lucky that it was resolved with a few reboots. But I dread the day when this thing starts doing what some have reported... over and over all day long for weeks or months at a time. It's absolute garbage that DODGE and Uconnect won't stand behind this and do the right thing.

I’m with you, won’t be buying from this brand ever again so I’ve given up on trying to complain. I buy cheap cars so it’s not like they even care about losing a customer like me or anyone else on the forum. Just going to watch Dodge become the new Pontiac in a few years and sip a beer.

Now I'm getting messages about my lease ending, in microfiche font, and seriously messed up formatting with a button to call the dealership, a request to use calling permissions, and some other junk that I can't even read on my screen. My lease doesn't end until APRIL. Strangely, these pop up when I turn the Durango OFF. Then of course as soon as somebody opens the door, the system shuts off. Took me several attempts to even read what it was because my wife and kids kept opening the doors. I love how they can make sure I see ads from Sirius/XM and the dealership, but they can't make the promised functions work. This is f*cking ridiculous.

Ouch, seriously??? Wtf!

Most mechanics will tell you that the quality of Chrysler products (Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram) and customer service went downhill after Daimler (the Mercedes-Benz company) sold its Chrysler holdings in 2007. I have a 2007 Durango daily driver that has had very few problems and is still going strong. However, a few months ago I tried to set up a service appointment with the local CDRJ dealership to look at an air conditioner problem and was told they didn't service anything that old. Fortunately, I was able to fix the problem myself with the purchase of a bi-directional scanner and a few parts, and ended up saving a lot of money. Their loss, my gain. The lesson learned: I will never purchase another Chrysler (or Stellantis owned) product again.

Hi BobFromTheCave,
Is the below what is needed for the software & hardware?
Interface cable

Software

Thank you

Hello. Yes, this cable looks similar. And yes, the DiagFCA website is correct.

I purchased these two items:
1. amazon.ca/gp/product/B094Z7PBLS
2. amazon.ca/gp/product/B07S91VZXT

* US buyers - please replace .ca with .com

Depending on the place you live, you may or may not see these items available.

The second item is optional and may be required if you decide to change your vehicle settings. This is not required for diagnostics, unless you decide to disable your TBM2 module. This action disables your "SOS" button, can cause some issues with your warranty and you need one more cable such as ebay.com/itm/292945158178 (Fakra Z Male to Fakra Z Male) to keep your GPS active. Here's the post with more details, but I don't recommend this way for everyone. It's much better to locate the actual problem and secure cables if they are loose.

UPD: I opened amazon.com and used New York zipcode and found 3 identical cables from the same store. I have no idea what's the difference because they look identical, cost almost the same price and come from the same seller. You are welcome to provide a feedback here and say if another cable (not B094Z7PBLS) worked for you. And VGate is not the only cable that can be used, a list of recommended cables can be found here: https://appcar-diagfca.com/en/how-it-works (scroll down).

I'm surprised that no one has asked what the heck you're talking about.

FWIW with Appcars DiagFCA (PC software only not like Alfaobd which is either android/PC) I prefer using ODBlink EX which is a USB to OBD interface. You already need a laptop so why not connect with a more robust data path like USB instead of BT/wireless. I find the BT/wireless dongles don't always do what the software commands them...at least this is true with Alfaobd.

There is a thread about removing the cellular antenna from the telematics box by bypassing it. Then you'll still have the GPS and Sirius inputs but not the annoying lack of cellular service. Search for telematics and you'll probably find the post which was made this week.

Update on my situation:

My fiancee has a '21 CPO that we bought about 3 months ago and it started throwing the "UCONNECT BOX REQUIRES SERVICE" literally a week after we bought it. I posted on here and @DodgeCares got involved, opening up a case. We took it to the dealer and the problem went away brifely. The issue returned again, but it was during the holidays so we didn't get it back to a dealership immediately and then I had a vacation scheduled. Well, since they hadn't heard from me for a week, Dodge closed the case. Highly annoyed by that. Plus, we've had it back to the dealership 2x more and the error keeps coming back. That alone is frustrating, but about 2 weeks ago I bought a 2023 Durango for myself and it just started throwing this error, too! WTH?? Including my fiancee's car, this is my 8th Durango (plus 4 Ram 1500's over the years) and the treatment of this has me rethinking my loyalty.

Reading through this thread, I wonder if this error is thrown when the integrated cellular device has a poor or no connection to a cellular tower. Maybe the system thinks there's a problem because it cannot connect to a tower?

If so, this would explain why some folks have it recurring across multiple vehicles while others (like myself) have never experienced this with any of my uConnect Stellantis vehicles.

If you live in an area where the provider uConnect uses (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc ...) has poor coverage it could explain you having this across multiple vehicles.
