I just bought my 01 about 2 weeks ago, and it started having this hesitation right off the line, and kind of a suttering up until about 3000 rpm under WOT. I took it too the dealer and they said I need new plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. I figured I'd do this anyway, and I'm looking at the MSD wires, Bosch Platinum+4 plugs, and Mopar performance cap and rotor. Is this a good choice? Thanks for any info you guys have!

the wires are a good choice. as for the cap/rotor, I'd recommend the Duralast Gold cap/rotor kit as the cap has brass inserts and is heavier duty than stock (maybe lower price compared to Mopar, also.) for the plugs, the choice around here's Autolite# 3923.
I know others will chime in, but that's my 2¢.

If you're not having pinging issues, then stick with the original equipment Champion plugs #RC12LC4 (stock #439.)
For me, I like and recommend the Belden Max wires from NAPA, and their premium Echlin line cap & rotor are excellent too.

Use the OEM plugs or the Autolite# 3923. Mopar performance cap and rotor are good as it the NAPA version (guys here love it) mentioned above. Stay away from the Bosch +4s. Consider the Autolites and the Napa your 1st two performance modifications. You'll thank us next month for the headsup in advance wheneverything is running smooth -*or*- curse us for being right next month when you're get fed up with the +4s

Welcome to the club!

The magnum engines just don't seem to like them very often. They run best with no pinging on the cheap Autolite 3923s as Indy D said above.
As for the cap and rotor, the Napa ones are a great choice!

Any auto parts house that carries Autolite s should have them about $1 each

Any reason why the Bosch +4 is no good for the D?
-Patrick
IMHO, they're no good for any engine. Ours are no exception.
The better majority of the time we get a car in our shop that has an ignition related driveability or no-start problem, it has Bosch platinum plugs (of some variety) in it. Install a new set of the correct OEM replacement plugs and the problems go away.

MSD wires - great choice
Echlin brand brass cap/rotor mentioned by one above - great choice

I've used the 3923s before but my engine seems to run better on the NGK FR5-1s. I had a buddy with the 5.9L and his truck ran really smooth on the Champion truck plugs (black ceramic.)

Great color on the D by the way!

The spark plug gap should be .040

So did they say belly pan gasket on the intake or just intake gaskets?

All the invoice says is intake manifold gaskets. So I'd assume that they meant both. When I called them to get a price on the gasket, they told me that there's the intake gasket, as well as the pan gasket. I assumed that I'd need to replace both, since I'll be in there already.

Do you guys know where to get the autolite 3923?? I've tried a couple of places online with no luck. They do list some other autolite platinum plugs, but I want to make sure they'll work before I buy them. Thanks for the help!

I found a whole bunch of them at Wal-Mart of all places?

good luck.

I replaced mine, it wasn't leaking that bad though. When I replaced mine I put the hughes engine heavy duty replacement belly pan and gasket. They claim you'll never have any leak problems again, its been 3yrs and no problems. If your contemplating installing an M1 or other type of intake, now's the time to do it. I wish I had done that, because now I'll have to do the job again. I intend on replacing the intake with a hughes engine stage I, if I was going to do the cam and put in roller rockers I'd get an M1.

are the 3923's a good plug for the older 318 5.2l also?? I have Bosch platinum 2's in now and it runs pretty smooth, but its getting to be that time to change again!! How exactly can you tell if you engine "pings"??

Yes, the Autolite 3923's are fine for your engine (My son had them in his '99 Dak 5.2L and they were great.)

Pinging sounds like you have marbles banging around your engine. It's probably most noticable under load or while accelerating.

Replacing those bosch +2 is a must, I just replaced mine with the autolite AP2923's(platinum.) I have bosch +4 in my ford, 7 years and the plugs still look new. I only changed the cap, rotor and wires during that time. When I bought my +2's over a year ago they were great, truck ran flawless. Over the last three months I developed a cold start problem, pulled the plugs and they looked decent. After doing research I found these things could cause a cold start problem. Crank sensor(changed 2 yrs ago), Fuel pump(changed 1 year a ago), coolant temp sensor(had corrosion around the threads changed 7 days ago), pickup coil(camshaft sensor changed 7 days ago), I even changed the cap & rotor. It ended up being the plugs, I had so much success with bosch plugs they were the first thing I purchased for the "D". I had them in 3 months, before I joined any forum. I refused to replace them after only 3 month's wheneveryone said bosch were no good for magmun engines. A year ago, a couple hundred dollars in unnecessary parts and frustration on cold days I wished I'd've listened. I learned from experience, stay away from bosch. The "D" now starts like it's new, if you live in a warm climate you probably won't experience what I did.

I live in wisconsin and just had a cold winter, but no problems, but I'm going to try the autolites, just to see if there's a dif.

How long have you had the bosch in your "D"? I also have the Msd6A, Msd 8.5 superconducter wires, accel coil, maybe this plus the way I drive was to much for the bosch plugs. The bosch tip is surrounded by ceramic, so once the top of the tip get carbon on it you have a problem. Other plugs the spark can come from the tip, or the sides to the electrodes.
