My tranny is leaking at the joint between the torque convertor and transmission and between the transfer case and the transmission.

I have been told at three different transmission shops that it's simply the seals that are leaky. Cost varried between 350 and 650. This includes dropping the transmission and replacing seals on the pump inside the tranny and the main seals between the tranny and torque covertor and pump.

Anyway my tranny was starting to slip simply because the fluid was low. It isn't leaking bad, but nevertheless if you look on the undercarriage you can see it around here and there.

Is there any other alternative to replacing these seals? I'm thinking about using a bottle of Transmission: Stop leak which I'm assuming expands the current seals.

I know that preventative maintenence is important. But a little leak never killed anyone as long as I periodically check the fluid right? And make sure there aren't big pools of tranny fluid under my truck.

If anyone has any input let me know thanks.

tranny leaks

Your tranny could also be leaking due to wear on the TC snout. Can't tell the difference between the seal or the tc without dropping the trans. Bad seals also accelerate wear on the shafts they seal against, so it'll only get worse from here.

Additives just delay, and seem to guarantee a rebuild. They work great for a while, but when they can't do any more the tranny goes south real fast, and at the wrong time (always.)

I'd give Dan Arcand a call and see what he recommends, when it's time. His prices are always competitive and the info is just dead on.

that's exactaly what I didn't want to hear.

So you don't recommend a bottle of stop leak? If it's just the seals and the stop leak actually makes the seals stop leaking, wouldn't that solve the problem.

They said it was leaking from my transfer case too, that's why I think its just the seals.

Both tranny shops said it happened cause of load I put on it during mud riding. AHHHH?

ANd now I'm FINALLY about to get mud tires haha.

Mine has always leaked in that spot? had it fixed 3 times under extended warranty? still leaks? I gave up! :wall:

If you wheel in the sand or better yet snow? it'll take all the evidence off that it's leaking

I have never gotten a leak in mine and I did some pretty extreme mud bogging and off roading (4 years, every other weekend on average) before I got my Jeep so I don't think that did it. I remember a couple years ago there was a lot of leaks reported between the transfer case and transmission (search the forum II archives.) It's hard to tell which is leaking until you take them apart since they both use ATF. A small pump seal leak may stay a small leak for a long time but a seal leak on the output shaft will get worse.
I have never used stop leak because I have always been told by mechanics that it may stop the leak (for awhile) but it'll also clog places the fluid needs to run through (like valves.) If you're going to replace it anyway, stop leak may keep you going for awhile.

Just my 2¢

In addition to ALL the other leaks I've had, my transfercase has also had issues. The seal between the halfs has been sealed twice. The input seal also leaked. The mechanic (trusted) said the bushing was worn causing the problem. (If the bushing is worn, stop leak isn't going to correct the problem.)
