I have been looking for an RV with limited success so far because I don't want to pay "that" much for one, so I just started thinking about getting a trailer instead in order to save $.
Did a quick search of the archives for info on the towing limits of the D and have noted the info given and the words of caution regarding towing heavy (over 5k lb) trailers. However, it wasn't clear whether people towing heavy loads had Class 3 or Class 4 hitches on their Ds.
My D has a Class 3 hitch, which the manual says is limited to a max trailer weight of about 5500 lbs and 10500 gross. Most of the trailers I'm interested in weigh close to the max trailer weight of 7250 (12250 gross) , which my manual says a D can handle with a CLASS IV hitch.
Notwithstanding the other equipment issues for towing a heavy trailer with a D, does anyone know exactly what the difference between a Class 3 and Class 4 hitch is and, also, does anyone know if you can convert a Class 3 into a Class 4 hitch by any means (retrofit kit or otherwise) or do you have to replace the Class 3 hitch with an entirely new Class 4 hitch assembly?
