TNG Spare Swap

579 Views 15 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Buck99rog
I have a 21 TNG that I love. I am awaiting a 23 TNG as I got a deal I couldn't refuse. I've heard that the spare is not included on the 23. I have it on my 21. Dealer indicates he doesn't care if I take it before trading. Question ... is it a plug and play situation from the 21 to the 23? If so ... what parts/bolts, etc. should I remove from the 21 (tire/wheel of course) prior to trading as I don't want to miss anything?

Thanks in advance.

Lower the spare and remove the 3 bolts. Don't forget to grab the jack, lug wrench, and the metal rods.

I have never lowered the spare on this vehicle. I'm not familiar with the metal rods. Are there any heat shields to remove? I saw those mentioned in an SRT forum.

Thanks.
The metal rods slide together to form a longer one to assist with the jack. They all should be together (jack, lug wrench, and rods) in the rear storage compartment. You can take the heat shields too.

Most winch systems operate the same. You take the lug wrench and turn the screw that operates the winch, as described in the manual.
If you're not familiar with any of the parts that make up your spare/jack assembly, maybe you don't need to take it...lol

Everything you need is on your '21. The heat shield is a two-piece plastic thing that protects the tire from exhaust pipe heat. Remove it with six or eight nuts. Your '23 will have the studs for the heat shield already installed...you just attach it with the nuts. The winch is held on with 3 bolts. The jack/handle kit will fit right into the same spot on the '23 as the '21. The whole swap took me about 30 minutes, and that included cleaning the spare and heat shield.

Your '23 will have a rubber grommet/plug filling the access hole for the winch handle. Pop it out of the '23 and pop it into the '21 so road noise and potential road grime doesnt creep it's way into the cabin.....

Edit: I just noticed that you won't have both cars at the same time....so maybe a little tape to cover the hole in the '21....but it's not a big deal. It's a .75" hole in the bottom of the rear storage area that is already covered by a plug in the plastic trunk liner.

LOL ... I have been lucky. I haven't had to touch or look at the spare in any of my last five Durangos. I've had a 2011 RT, 2015 RT, 2018 RT, 2020 (SRT), 2021 RT ... and waiting on my 2023 RT. Love these things.

I appreciate the input. Thanks!
You, sir, are a waster of money. Or you are of one of our impatient generations that can't be happy with anything.
Think what you want. I put a lot of miles on, and don't care to own past the warranty given the deals I'm able to do. With this ridiculous used car market I actually made money on the 2018 and 2020. The 2021 I'll lose $5K over two years of ownership. I'm about to turn 54 years age, and have worked my ass off for everything I have. Thank you for your assumptions and unsolicited input.

I've had a 2000, '03, '06, '09 (all of them SLTs), '14 R/T, '18 SRT and '21 HC.
The only time I needed to replace a flat was with my 2000.
But I did have to replace two run-flats on my '18. None caused me to pull over, thankfully.

Have the tire, etc. and heat shield out. As far as the jack and such do I need to take any of the mounting hardware with me as well? I haven't seen my 23 so I don't know what is or is not there. Thanks.

Thanks.
Take the hardware. And anything else that isn't nailed down.
