Testing to see if a/c compressor is bad

What are the steps in testing for a bad A/C compressor? I'm good with my hands, but not very familiar with anything that has to do with A/C. My compressor is slightly hard to turn in the center, I'm not sure if its ceased up or not. My system has the right amount of refrigerant in it according to a cheap can of EZ-Chill. How much does it cost to get my Durangos a/c system evacuated and recharged? I have rear air. Thanks in advance.

FWIW... I had my 02 Dak QC (obviously no rear air) compressor replaced, and sytem recharged for around $800...

I seem to be having the same problem. I'm no expert, but what I'm told is that is you if can turn it, it's probably not seized up. However the compressor might still need to be replaced.

Just out of curiosity, how does your serpentine belt look/sound? Mine is in bad shape and I don't know if that has anything to do with the performance of the A/C system or not (because it powers the compressor). If that were the problem, it would be a much less expensive fix than evaluating and recharging your A/C system.
