No, not the thing police (taser) fire into the neighborhood baddies... I'm talking about this thing:

http://www.zautotech.com/tazer.html

I just bought that for my new 2015 Charger Scat Pack I picked up yesterday. The Scat Pack compliments the Durango quite nicely (Bright White Durango, Ivory White Pearl Charger) and it sure as hell is fast! :)

However I was checking out some posts related to the Charger and people were talking about how additional options could be enabled in uConnect and the EVIC using this "Tazer" device. After thinking it over and the fact the Scat Pack is damn near a full SRT car - I wanted the rest of the bells and whistles in the infotainment system. So I bought it.

I sent them an email and asked if it would support the 2014 Durango, since they say they support the 2015 Durango. They responded and said it should work, but if not to let them know and they'll work with me on a firmware update to fix it. Pretty neat - not sure what it will do. However one feature was "100% RWD on an AWD vehicle". HMM......... :)

I did a quick search here and came up empty handed. I will post an update when I receive the device and will let you guys know what, if anything it does on my 2014 Durango R/T AWD.

I see there is a Firmware update (2.2.0-110915) listed yesterday for the Tazer, but it hasn't listed the Firmware Revision yet.

It only works on 14-15's and probably 16 s Soon
I dont know what would happen if you plugged it in an 11-13

Mine is due to arrive tomorrow so I can see what works and does not work on a 2016 R/T. I suppose I could test it on my brothers 2012 Crew as well.

Z Auto offers a 30 day return policy, so if nothing works on the 2016, I'll just send it back.

How have I been on the forum this long, reading it almost everyday and not heard about this device until just now? For $250 it's fun to just try it out. Ordered one today.

I received my Tazer on Friday and did some playing around. Here are my findings:

The Tazer was received with an older firmware, so 1st thing I did was update it to 2.2.0. I did this before ever plugging it in.

After plugging it in, I cycled through the options and recorded the default settings, and this is what they were:

Option Default Value
Lightshow? {no default value}
Clear CELs? {no default value}
Sport5sp Yes
Sport8sp No
SRTSET No
PERFSET No
PADDLES Yes
CAM En Yes
DRL Drop Yes
FOGS En Yes
FOG Drop Yes
NAVINMO No
CAMGRID Yes
STP en No
DrvMode No
DrvTrans Yes
SHFTLT No
TZ2G 2.2.0

I tried the lightshow 1st, and it worked with the steering wheel buttons, as well as the FOB. I heard a pretty loud clunk everytime the headlights were activated though. I assumed this was due to the self-leveling lights, so I went into the ZPU utility and unchecked the high beams from the light show, and the clunking stopped.

The lightshow is kind of neat, nice for car shows I suppose. I left the Tazer plugged into the OBD port for the rest of the day, and about 5 hours later, when we were leaving a restaurant after dinner, I tried to enable the lightshow with the FOB, while walking out of the restaurant, and it didn't work. When we got home, I tried several more times, and the lights would flicker for about 4 seconds or so, then stop. Not sure why it's not working anymore.

I tried to get the SRT perfomance pages to show up by turning different options on, and wasn't able to do so; but here is what I was able to see:

  • Enabling SRTSET did give the SRT splash screen, as well as the SRT themes in the 8.4AN
  • |
  • Enabling STP and DrvMode revealed the "Drive modes" option during start up as well, and I was able to touch the button on the screen and have it light up, but nothing seemed to change in the apps with it enabled. Sorry the pic is so out of focus, the screen goes by so fast the camera didn't have time to focus on it.
  • |
  • Enabling SRTSET, PERFSET, STPen and DRVMODE all at once did not give me the performance pages :(

The line lock and ESP disable seem to work, although I'm not sure. I didn't test the line lock by trying to spin the rear tires yet, but will do sometime soon. Not sure if the ESP items were all disabled after the 1st hold of the button, or after the 2nd hold.

Here is a video showing the line lock and ESP disable features being enabled/disabled:

I sent all of this to the Tazer developer, so we'll just have to wait and see what else, if anything, he can do for us. I'll update as I know more.

I enabled the NAVINMO option, but haven't yet tested it. From what I've read, it only works on 2014 years, although hasn't been tested on a 2016 yet.

My Durango is not AWD, so I can't comment on RWD mode. But from what I've read, it seems to work.

What would you like to know? Had mine about 2 weeks now. Best feature is the ability to keep the fog lights on while using the high beams. I've been playing with the light show, and found that the incandescent turn signal bulbs and reverse lights are not fast enough to produce a good flash patterns. I just swapped out those bulbs for LEDs. The light show is much more functional with the LED bulbs installed.

Nothing further. I am going to end up sending it back and use the funds on a CAI, or maybe for Diablo Sport when they finally get a tuning solution for the 2016.

I just talked to the creator of the tazar and he said he is sending an update now to a durango owner to see if SRT pages unlock. So not sure if it is one of you guys that have tried. Looking forward to see if it works

#116 ·
Yep, it's me, and I just got his email. Looks like he got nav-in-motion to work as well. Ill try once my wife returns with the Durango and let you guys know.

#117 ·
yeah looks like he got navi and DVD in motion.

#118 ·
Ok, I just tried out the test firmware.

Navigation while in motion is now working :), and it can be changed while driving. I drove down my street, went to input a new address, and got the typical message that it can't be done while driving. Then I changed the TaZer setting as I was driving, and the 8.4AN message went away and the keyboard came up. So he's successfully unlocked the navigation in motion piece.

The video selection piece works too. It allowed me to scroll through three video sources: Backup Cam, Aux, and VES (rear seat entertainment). I don't have the rear seat entertainment, so I can't comment on that working while in motion. Selecting the back up cam did work to turn on the rear camera without being in reverse, but the screen goes solid blue as soon as the vehicle reaches 12mph. I think on the challengers, it cuts out at 20mph. He is aware of this, but asked me to test it on the Durango.

Apparently the AUX source is an aux input somewhere on the back of the radio. Anyone know where this is? It would be nice to be able to hook something up to this.

I sent him the feedback, so we'll see what happens next. Having the "nav in motion" working is a great thing though! Based on that alone, I won't send it back after all.

Yes. As sated previously in this thread, the TaZer allows you to turn existing OEM features on and off, as well as give you the ability to do some other cool things. You don't even need to leave it plugged in for most of the items to continue working. Just plug the TaZer in, make your adjustments, then unplug it.

Some features, like the lightshow, linelock, ESP disable, etc ... do require it to stay plugged in to the OBD II port. But the others, like Fog Light drop, Nav in Motion, DRL drop, etc ... stay engaged even after removing the TaZer.

If you have to bring it in for warranty, simply set the features back to their OEM setting and the dealer won't know anything was changed. Although even if they did know, I can't see how anything the TaZer does could void the warranty.

So no SRT pages still?

#122 ·
No, the performance pages are still not working. Setting SRT mode gets you the SRT splash screen, as well as the SRT themes, but no performance pages. Setting DRIVE MODEs to ON, gets you the button to select drive modes (normal, sport or track) upon start up, but making a selection seems to have no affect. I thought selecting sport would enable sport mode (on my 2016), but it doesn't.

So after reading about some of the updates, it seems that the Tazer does a majority of what the Lockpick does (and some more) for half the price. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I have read you get:

Navigation in motion
DVD in motion
Aux in motion
Disable AWD
Lightshows
Disable stability control
Some menu features

My questions are:

1. When you set Navigation in motion, does it stay that way even when you turn the vehicle off and on? Or do you need to constantly reset it every time you start the truck?
2. For those with AWD--can you set it RWD and leave it like that? With the warmer months approaching soon, I would be very interested in this. I think this would be a great option to get better gas mileage for the warmer weather months to use RWD only.

Yes, the test firmware I tried yesterday did activate Nav in Motion and selection of 3 different video inputs (rear cam, VES, AUX). When selecting rear cam, it turned off when the vehicle hit 12 MPH. I don't have the rear entertainment setup, or any AUX video devices, so I can't confirm those things. Keep in mind this is just allowing selection of the video inputs though, it's not like the lockpick where you get aux video and audio inputs sync'ed together.

The developer has an external DVD connected to the AUX in (by tapping into wires in the radio harness), and for the audio, he had to route it through the 1/8" aux input connector. This is different than the lockpick, where that one gives you physical input jacks to connect a video source with audio, and then the lockpick also includes changes to the touch interface to enable selection. The TaZer doesn't give you an interface through the touch screen, but instead works by using the steering wheel buttons to make selections.

So essentially, the TaZer is just overriding the video output to the screen and allowing you to select a different input.

My questions are:

1. When you set Navigation in motion, does it stay that way even when you turn the vehicle off and on? Or do you need to constantly reset it every time you start the truck?
You do not need to reselect it each time, the nav-in-motion selection stays and is remembered.

2. For those with AWD--can you set it RWD and leave it like that? With the warmer months approaching soon, I would be very interested in this. I think this would be a great option to get better gas mileage for the warmer weather months to use RWD only.
I don't have AWD, but I'm confident in saying this selection would probably stay as well. I do see the AWD MODE menu item, and on mine, it's set to "default". I haven't scrolled through the choices as I don't want to take the chance of messing anything up since I don't have AWD.
