I know?and I appreciate your feedback?

Just trying to decide if they're being honest or not.

I mean, basically, I'm getting $88 off a $288 job, not the $400 off they're saying?since I can get the work done at an independent shop for less than HALF the cost they want?

Should I argue or take it??

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this?I still feel like I shouldn't be looking at spending even $200 to repair rust on a vehicle that's only 4 years old and has 50k miles on it and is barely driven.

Well, for anyone following this?

Just got off the phone with the service manager at the dealer?

After a bit of discussion, he knocked it down another $50 to $150, which I accepted. I figured that's about half of what the local shop charged?plus, even though there's no guarantee it won't come back, I can hold them to a higher standard seeing as they're claiming they charge more becaise of quailty etc?

So we'll see I guess?

I still feel like it should be covered?seams shouldn't fail and rust that way, not on a vehicle with 50k on it that's well mainained?Chrysler offering to pay ANYTHING is an admitance tha there's an issue?otherwise they'd tell me to go pound salt.

I didn't want to fight with the dealer guy cause he seemed sincere enough?

SO it'll be done, and HOPEFULLY done right.

I'll keep you guys posted if anyone is still interested?

I'll probably try to do the rad support rust myself?sandblast it and the use something like Extend or something?it doesn't seem to have grown at all for a long time?its the seam rust that's growing like cancer.

Paint the rad support with POR-15 Paint
It'll seal it up and not come back

I wonder if you couldn't make this thing rust really fast by running it through an electrolysis process of some sort. Like take the door off or body panel etc, suspend it and then encourage the rust to grow there with voltage + I don't know salt water in a?? I'm not sure, but it sounds like a good idea?

The rust is on the body of the vehicle, not the tailgate.

Wow that's pretty bad on an 04 D

-When are you fixing your door seam rust, and how are you doing it? I'm right down the road from you :D We can have an Indy area D meet!

-The wife and I spent a few hours today driving trucks, seeing what I'd replace my D with if I replaced it. Drove two new '08 F150s. I couldn't get back in my D fast enough. :]

I'd contact Chrysler care and ask about the rot
To me its premature and should be taken care of by Dodge

On Joe's '04 he may have a chance.

On mine, I'm SOL.

I'll be taking the weatherstrip off. Once off, I'll evaluate the damage. If need be, it'll get sanded and or removed via the dremel (the rear hatch really needs dremel now. It'll be clean through in 18 months tops.) Once cleaned, prepped and/or sanded, I'm hitting it with POR and Mopar rattle-can-to-match to cover it all up. Once dry, reapplying the weatherstripping when finished. I have a new (used) drivers door strip that'll go back on for that side.

Anyone else with any ideas?

Take some pics of yours before Indy, I'm curious to see how bad it's. On my '04 there's weather stripping on the bottom of the door, as well as all around the door opening on the body. I'm sure the weather stripping on the door helped the rust out. The F150's I drove today didn't have that on them, I've got to get in and drive a new Ram?

Premature is for sure. I've got an appt. for the service manager to look at it on Tuesday morning.
Ask to have the district rep there as well. That way the service manager can skate around it

Indy I agree with your plan of attack!!

Service manager took a look at it and doesn't think they'll cover it. The warranty is it has to be rusted through, and on an outside panel. I'll reply back when he hears from Chrysler?they need to cover this. An '04 is too new to have this issue.

Surface rust isn't covered. The federal mandate on auto coverage warranties is 'rust through' so you may need to accelerate the damage or keep an eye on it while your warranty is still applicable.

Which local dealer did you go to?

I've got until August 24th of 2009 until the 5 year mark hits, and I'm out of coverage. Might be easier to just do it myself. I went to Danville CJD, almost went to Champion. How soon are you going to take care of yours?

With my schedule?! Dunno. I'd like to get it done before the snow which is what, Nov some time? However, it's not on my priority list, but may get a spot on the 'fun to do something else to clear my head' list sooner than that. We'll see. I only have 700 items on my work list, 350 on my home list, 1000 on my honey-do-list and this item. Priorities right?! :)

So the dealer I went to was getting a new district rep, and he didn't know who that was yet, said it could take a few days for him to get a response. Is it worthwhile to go visit another dealer while I'm waiting, or just wait for the first dealer to get an answer for me?
