Strange noise

Hello I have a 1998 Durango. I started to hear a rattling noise coming from the front of the motor. We thought it might be a bad bearing in the A/C compressor so we bought a shorter belt and re-routed to avoid the compressor but the noise still persists. With no belt on at all the engine is quiet. The sound is like a deck of cards being shuffled and it sounds kind of hollow. Turning the water pump, alternator and power steering pump by hand they all feel smooth. I have a feeling it is either the power steering or water pump but neither of them have been giving me any problem, but I guess there could potentially be a bad bearing in one or the other. I am going to take it to a local garage and see if they can find the problem, just wanted to see if anyone on here may have had the same problem. Also I checked the radiator fan and it turn free and smooth.

don't forget the belt tensioner and the idler pulley. the idler I'd suspect first. tensioner is not far behind. been there, done that.
What belt # did you use for AC bypass?

905K7 belt, I check idler pulley and tensioner they spin smooth. I am leaning towards the water pump although I can turn it by hand and have had no problems with over heating I know that I cannot turn it fast enough to see if there is any clicking sounds. With the belt off the motor is whisper quiet so I at least know that it isn't coming from the crankshaft.

even though it can spin freely, check its wobble, should be none.

looks like tensioner.
what's funny, the bearings in the tensioner and idler, are the same as my 10000rpm Rockwell tablesaw, and they last maybe 5000 hours before they go bad. you can change only the bearings if you want to get your hands dirty.

I just was out under the hood with the belt off the pulleys again when I noticed some excessive play in the fan. While I tried to figure out were the play was coming from I noticed the pulley for the water pump was wobbling with the fan blades. I don't believe that there should be any play there at all. I have an appointment scheduled for Friday morning to replace the water pump, and I will replace the belt tensioner myself. Also I have been noticing a distinct smell of anti-freeze coming through my heater vent, but the pump still isn't leaking or causing any overheating.
