SRT Gas Mileage

I know this might not be the most popular topic with SRT owners, but I am contemplating the purchase of a SRT and wonder how bad the fuel economy can be. Is that 15mpg combined number attainable with normal driving if the driver is not hammering the pedal constantly? At 5500 pounds, the Durango is pretty heavy, and if asked to constantly accelerate quickly, I do imagine it can really use a good bit of fuel.
I've got my big boy pants on now, so let me have hear the bad news.

I am at 18.000 miles. I drive about 75% suburban streets, 25% highway. While driving around town, I mostly drive in sport mode to disable 4 cyl. Plus I like the drive characteristics in sport, i.e., transmission shifting, steering, etc. in sport mode. My mileage can be as high as 17 and as low as 12. I would say 14-15 is a consistent average. I put my foot in it often because its so addicting. I never think about mileage and never drive to achieve the best mileage.

This is my third Durango, the previous two were 5.7 Hemis, but this SRT is really special. I love this thing. I actually enjoy driving it as much as my 650 HP C7 Corvette.

First mileage check on Day #2 of ownership, 168 miles on the odo, 147 mile trip distance, 15.3 mpg, hand calculated from pump shutoff to pump shutoff, not too bad to me for what this vehicle is. BTW, the ECU said the mileage was 16.1, which is why I always hand calculate the mpg...

I'm trying...but it's sooo hard  The max. speed was at 97 before I pulled out of the dealer, apparently from the dealer "inspection"... As per family tradition, I had to make sure the 3rd digit was working properly, so I did do a nice easy pull from freeway cruise just to confirm ;-), but yes, just letting her break in nicely.

oh yea, we will all be old pro's at the capless fill neck LOL. I guess it's a matter of perspective, but when I recall my fond memories of the 1977 Suburban with a carbureted 454 I had as my first tow rig, the Durango gas gauge needle has nothing on it ;-)

I think the better question about this is how often do you put your foot into it? I bet their isn't a SRT owner that doesn't put their foot into it per tank. So with that in mind MPG is always going to be low.
I own a R/T and the only time I get good MPG is when I don't put my foot into it.

Hey guys. Follow-up to my previous post. Went skiing in Canada. 1000mi round trip. I wasn’t going slow... Used cruise a lot. About 100mi in big hills once i got there. I got my average mpg to hit 18 (did not reset since purchase). On highway, just a slight uphill was around 12mpg, and over 20 in downhills. Not too many flat sections, but it was around 19mpg. Calculations at the pump confirmed the above. Not bad! Came back two days ago and sadly, my average is free falling....

Hey Garyb, I'm kinda hijacking my own thread, but, when towing 7000lbs, what is your oil and water temp and what is the ambient?

I do think that is very good MPG for that kind of towing load for sure. Some drivers have a hard time getting that MPG just doing regular driving, and they know who they are. Hah.

Gas mileage on the DDSRT sucks. Period. But that's not really why we bought them now, is it? :) That being said, I've noticed a 2mpg average increase after installing an aFe Momentum GT CAI. I think that's largely due to the fact that the air intake temp is about 15-20 degrees cooler now since the aFe CAI draws in air from the front grill and the wheel well. $450 mod but worth it imo. Shaved a couple 10ths of a second off my launch stats too. Just go for it brother. They're hella fun to drive.

Hey guys, I'm getting 13 in town and with eco on the highway I can get 20 1/2. Highway driving is at 70 to 75. My 2014 ram limited with 100 hp less got 12 in town and 18 on the highway. Don't know if it's Aerodynamics or what but I am happy with the highway mileage on the SRT. Towing with the SRT I get about 10 10 1/2 towing 5 to 6000 pound boat.

Yep, a while back someone said that if you hold the speed to 70 mph, the engine will stay in 4 cyl mode and that would produce about 20 mpg. I only have 200 miles and have not figured out how to tell when 4 cyl mode is active but the instantaneous mpg readout would probably be a good indicator, I assume.

I'm at just under 3,000 miles, and my aggregate average is 16.7 mpg - a lot of A/C on, significant mountain driving, a little bit of "fun" here and there, normal city stop-n-go, highway cruising at 80+. Only thing I haven't done is tow. High tank high was 20.7, low tank 12.8. For what this vehicle is, not sure how anybody could be complaining too much...SMILES/gallon!

I guess I have been lucky with the fuel filler so far - have read of a lot of troubles, and I have more trouble with the damn shutting off every 5 seconds with my daily driver Chevy. Not one issue filling the Durango yet
