Squeaky Fan

I'm getting a squeak out of my fan and, in these temps, the clutch isn't kicking in so it's just windmilling from the friction on the clutch and not spinning fast. When I turn it off, the squeak continues as the fan spins down. There's no resistance and the fan spins smooth and easy.

Is there any way to lubricate it? Does it mean my clutch is failing?

My recollection is that the clutch is in some way different. When I had it done on my '99, the clutch was part of the TSB even though the old clutch was clearly perfectly fine with only a few thousand miles on it.
Thanks Tom! I wonder what the difference could be? maybe it has a stronger clutch or something? :?

So this fan and clutch from dodgeparts.com will run you about $160.

You don't get the fan whine at startup, it pulls in more air for better cooling and is quieter.

In my case, if I don't want to listen to the squeak, I have to do something anyway. It's squeaking less since it warmed up a bit, but is still there. $160 seems more than reasonable for a fix that's also a bit of an improvement.

I looked again and I can get on the big center nut easy enough and, if I can stop the pulley from turning, I can get that loose. If I do that and then pull the 4 fan bolts, I think I could snake the fan out and then the clutch after.

It may be easy to pull the shroud, but for some reason it didn't look that easy to me!

If you place a large wrench on the nut and whack it quickly, it'll come loose.

In case that doesn't work, stick a bolt into one of the bolt holes on the water pump pulley and place a big screwdriver in there to hold the pulley from turning and then use the wrench. The pulley's nut will come loose very easily.

Definitely the fan, you can hear it spin down after you turn the engine off so it's hard to miss! I may have another chirp, but won't know for sure until the fan's fixed.

We'll have to wait for one of the Dodge Tech guys here to post but I don't think this TSB covers 2000-2003 D's

The reason for the TSB was that 98-99's sometimes ran hot, we only have the mechanical engine driven fan. 00+ got the aux electric fan which helped with the cooling when the A/C is on. That's why it's not listed for 00-03.

Meaning you don't think the fan and clutch will fit?
Meaning it won't be free! It should fit??
As Neil stated, 00-03 got an e-fan as well which was supposed to be the fix.

The other reason for the v-10 was the fan roar on startup. For some reason the fan would drive on startup and you'd hear the roar of the fan at that point, even when the engine was cold. It'd go away, but for some it was a real bother. The fan clutch worked well otherwise.

Yes, had that on my '01. Not a problem on the '03, but higher volume and less noise seem like a worthwhile mod given that I need a new clutch anyway.

I wondered about that roar - bad design - I'm guessing it needed some rotational speed, or maybe centrifugal force, to release when first started. I have no idea what changed on the newer Gen 1's, along with the electric fan they must have modified the clutch as well.

The 03 most likely has a new design plastic fan blade.
The 01's had an odd looking metal blade.
Need someone with an 03 4.7 to look at their mechanical fan blade and let us know if it's plastic?

+1. I had that exact symptom. Not a drivability issue, just a roar at startup and cold for the first few minutes. Why it went away afterwards? Dunno. When I pulled it off, the viscus fluid/gel that was supposed to be in there? nada. It was as dry as a very old bone.

The 2000 has an all metal fan, but the fins aren't equally spaced apart. Some are closer and a few are father apart. Really an odd look to it.

That's the way they all are, my 99 stock, V-10 and my Wrangler fan.

The reason for the odd blade spacing, I'm told, is noise. The varying blade spacing spreads the noise spectrum out making it sound quieter and reducing vibration.
