Squeaky Fan

I'm getting a squeak out of my fan and, in these temps, the clutch isn't kicking in so it's just windmilling from the friction on the clutch and not spinning fast. When I turn it off, the squeak continues as the fan spins down. There's no resistance and the fan spins smooth and easy.

Is there any way to lubricate it? Does it mean my clutch is failing?

How old is it? If it's lost its oil, the bearings are wearing down and any amount of lubrication will only delay the inevitable. I'd start looking for a new fan clutch.

If your D suffers from the fan roar the 98-99 D's had, use the fan blade assembly and clutch listed in the tech notes for the V-10 fan swap. It's a different clutch and the fan blades are positioned differently to lower the fan noise while pulling in more air. It uses the V-10 fan assembly that bolts right on in place of the stock unit.

Other than that, the factory unit could be expensive. I'd check dodgeparts.com and your local auto parts chain stores for availability and pricing.

Anyone have the part numbers for the V10 fan?

They were in the tech section or questions section we had on the old forum. That's where I got the numbers from for my conversion.

Here's what I found in the FAQ section, Operational, "Roaring Noise at Startup":
While at the dealer this week having my "creaking" stabilizer bushings replaced and new expansion valves installed in the A/C system, my dealer surprised me with a switch of the stock fan and shroud with one he "claims" comes from the V10 engine. It's covered in TSB 07-07-98, originally meant to cover high engine operating temp (+210ÂşF) during high ambient temps (+90ÂşF.) He did it to mine to help the A/C (which needs help in Phoenix!)

The fan has a different pitch to the blades and, as a pleasant side benefit, is "much" more quiet than the stock fan/shroud set up. Also, maybe its wishful thinking, but the drag on the engine also seems less.

Anyway the new part numbers are: Fan 52027709, Fan drive 52029767AA, and Shroud 52029012AC (4x4) or Shroud 52028614AB (4x2.) Anyone else come across this? It really has made a difference in noise level.

So they had to replace the shroud as well? (coolant overflow and washer reservoir??)
Let me know I may pick one of those up.
I just read the TSB and it appears not to cover 2000-2003 D's because an e-fan was added to accomplish the same results.
Please let me know if they reused your existing factory shroud?

Funny you mention that Steve, I looked today and realized the shroud included those reservoirs and the swap didn't look quite as simple as I hoped. Mike, was it easy or did you have to move/disconnect a bunch of stuff to get the fan and shroud out?

I've searched a bit online and haven't found the parts. I'll check with the dealer, but I bet they're expensive.

Dodge parts has them in stock but the shroud is for 98-99 Ds only.
Did they reuse yours?
Did they replace the clutch, cause it seems they didn't?

Being that mines a 99, it got the new shroud the TSB mentions. I think the fan will fit in the 200-2003 shroud, perhaps with a little trimming if any??

#16 ·
GreenD, can you measure the diameter or even just the length from the hub to furthest edge out?
That fan blade is only about $33.

I'll get the dimensions in the morning. Mike, could you do the same?

Seems to me the only reason they'd change the '99 shroud would be a diameter difference, clearance issue. If that's the case, I'd think we'd have the same problem on the '03.

Steve, do you mean the V-10 fan is only $33? Do we assume it's the same viscous coupler for the V-10 assembly as is on the 5.9? Did you see a price for the coupler?

From www.dodgeparts.com

Clutch [Part# 52029767AA]
  • Quantity: 1
    Price:$179.00
    List Price:$179.00
    Your Price:$128.40
The clutch isn't the same so you have the V-10 clutch as well now.

I had that TSB done right after I go my D. The shroud doesn't need to be replaced. According to my dealer who did the work, it's only referenced if the shroud happend to be damaged from hitting the fan.

There's no roar with the V-10 fan.

#23 ·
My recollection is that the clutch is in some way different. When I had it done on my '99, the clutch was part of the TSB even though the old clutch was clearly perfectly fine with only a few thousand miles on it.

Can the fan and clutch be removed without removing the shroud? Looking today I wondered if a wrench could be turned in front of the fan without dinging the radiator. Or maybe remove the 4 fan bolts and push it rearward to give more room for your hands? Any thoughts?

#25 ·
You remove the fan and clutch via the large nut on the shaft. I don't remember if you can get it out without removing the shroud.

#26 ·
On my 2002 R/T, the shroud is in 2 parts and you only have to remove the upper one (there are only 2 3/8 bolts holding it on the upper of each side) and then it's sitting in 2 groves of the lower shroud. You have to detach the hoses for the front and rear washers, the small hose going to the upper hose of the radiator, the 3 plugs on the passenger side right next to the hoses and it's free and you'll have a much better working space. Just remember the order of the plugs and the washer hoses. Also on mine I needed a special tool to hold the water pump pulley while loosing the nut holding the fan clutch. It can be found in tool stores but I had mine made for me since it wasn't in stock in my local stores.
