So I go into the dealership to "look at the numbers" before signing any paperwork today. SURPRISE!!! They're way higher than what I had calculated.

Here's what they're telling me:

MSRP $48,480
Dealer discount $2,000
Dodge Rebate $1,000
Vehicle/Identity Theft Registration $387.50 (WTF???)
Fees $589.41

12k/year lease, 53% residual, $1,000 down = $670/month (WTF???)

When I calculated the payment based on the money factor davewg posted in another thread (.0065), plus monthly sales tax with no cash out of pocket I was just under $600/month.

Am I crazy here or is someone trying to hose me? (Of course they are.)

When he first laid the numbers in front of me, I almost laughed out loud. The monthly payment with $1,000 down was over $700/month! I told him nope, that's not right, he did the "Hmm, let me take a look" routine, and came out with the revised monthly payment of $660-670 (Why two prices? I didn't even ask.) And that was still with $1,000 down.

Tell me I'm not crazy to expect a sub (if just barely) $600 monthly lease payment with zero down?

As for the "Identity Theft Registration" fee of $387.50, he said the dealership does that to all their vehicles. I don't want it, I didn't ask for it, I shouldn't have to pay for it, right?

Unfortunately they have my $1,000 deposit from when I placed the factory order, so I can't just walk out the door (though I'm not going to get scammed either).

HELP!!!

The identity theft is probably glass etching , They just did that to my wifes new car and I said I am not paying for that and your lucky I dont want all new glass.
Look at what other fees are and let them know if there is a discrepancy

My dealer tried charging me a "prep" fee. IIRC I think it was about $250. I asked him for a pen and crossed it off. Asked him specifically what that was because I'm buying a brand new vehicle. It shouldn't need to be prepped. Told him for $250 I will screw on the license plate myself.

Also tried charging me$100 for a full tank of gas. Told him I didn't ask him to fill the fuel tank so he can kindly remove the gas. I think I read somewhere that dealerships get a fuel credit from the factory because they don't want vehicles sitting on dealer lots for months at a time with air in the tank which will allow condensation to form.

Rule #1. Be prepared to walk.
Rule #2. Just say no.
Rule #3. Your deposit is refundable. Period.

If this vehicle was ordered specifically for you (retail sold order - your name should be on the window sticker) they had no business etching the windows. Tell them you're not paying for it.

You should get a full tank of gas - that's a courtesy they get reimbursed for.

Most folks recommend not putting anything down on a leased vehicle to reduce the cap cost, so don't if you don't have to.

What's invoice on the vehicle? That should be your starting point, not MSRP - dealer discount of $2000. So your basic cap cost should be invoice - whatever rebates you have. Why are they telling you the MSRP? It should be on the window sticker...

Make sure the residual is based on the full MSRP.

The residual amount looks right (is that what I gave in the other thread). How many months? What MF are they giving you?

What do the dealer fees consist of? If you want to reduce the monthly lease payment pay the fees OUTSIDE the calculation of the lease.

In all sincerity; Why lease at $600/mo?
I was out the door for about $40,000 TTL on my purchase at 0%/5yr with $0 down and my payments are about $670.00. My MSRP was just under $45k.
What was funny, I did notice upon driving away the tank was full of gas .... That's never happened for me before!

Bro, that blows. Ok what do you like more, your $1K or the car? If you like the car then, look at purchasing options....a far as the etching of the glass.. You didn't ask for it don't pay for it...and this may be your get out of jail free card.....I would say that I not only didn't want it, but the glass needs to all be replaced as you despise it. I would start there. Being that they ruined your car, you can rightly refuse to accept it (because of damage) and you should be entitled to your deposit back.

When we ordered ours, we gave a $500 check as a deposit and they held on to it (ie: they didn't cash/deposit it). If something went sideways with the deal, I would have called the bank and put a stop payment on it.

Sounds like you need a better dealership. I don't trust any dealer who adds anything to every vehicle without the buyers knowledge/permission.

Yep. This is what happened when we ordered my wife's '14. The held in to the deposit check and gave it back to us when we picked up the vehicle.

Never having owned a Chrysler vehicle before, I'd like to date a Dodge for a couple of years before marrying it.
Financing the car does not mean you are married to it. At the price they're quoting you per month, it's almost a crime to lease... Just get a loan, put down as much as you can and enjoy the car. Otherwise just walk away. I would never consider special ordering a car precisely because your number one option when it comes to negotiating - walking away - is severely compromised when the deal is about the car you specifically requested. Good luck either way.

Yeah, that anti-theft glass etching is crap...like the paint/interior coatings they will apply.

However, there is prep to a new car, they do have to remove plastic wrap, clean it up and make sure fluids are topped, fuel, ect.
So, I would expect some fees to be charged, how much you can get that reduced depends upon how much they are making off you on the total deal.

There shouldn't be a "prep charge" when you buy a brand new vehicle. Those things are the cost of doing business for the dealership. You can absolutely get them to remove them. As a matter of fact, if you have an "Affiliate Rewards" number, those types of fees are not allowed at all.

I feel for you brother. I am kind of of in the same boat. I put $500 down as a deposit on my D which is still in D status. They told me up front that if I didn't buy from them, the $500 will not be refunded. I am not rich, but I can walk away from $500 bucks if the deal goes bad or if Murphy strikes. If you are willing, let us know how you solve this problem. From what little I know, I would finance it, and figure out a long term exit strategy.

So when you went to the dealership and saw the vehicle for the first time, were you moved? Besides the cost of the lease, what did you think about the vehicle?

The vehicle is freaking awesome. We've had it overnight. All the bells and whistles are great, it looks completely badass, and it's fun to drive. I drove past someone in a new Pilot and felt sorry for them. :D

What's the GPS software version? Pictures or we assume the deal fell through and you got passed by an R/T and are actually driving a 2002 Pilot from a buy-here-pay-here lot and halucinating!

I got a $3,000 discount from MSRP not including incentives/rebates on my 2016 order using Costco. Some people have posted much better deals than mine. I think your dealer should be able to do significantly better than a $2000 discount.

The Theft Registration is pure BS. I have purchased 2 cars recently and both had that cost pre-printed on the bill of sale. In both cases I crossed it out and the dealers never even blinked. It is just a way to squeeze a extra few hundred dollars out of inexperienced shoppers.

What is included in the $589 fees? That actually sounds reaonable for NJ if it includes dealer doc fees plus 4 year registration fees and title fees.

I agree. No prep charge on new vehicles. If anything the work done to "prepare" the vehicle should fall under the destination charge.
