We need new shocks on the D. Tried searching the board but I couldn't really find anything. Looking for mostly on-road performance with occasional dirt side roads and such. Any suggestions for brands or types? How about sources? I want quality but I don't want to spend more than $150-$200.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Monroe SensaTrac, Rancho 5000, Bilstein. All excellent choices.

I've used KYB in the past and thought they were fine. I'll be ordering a set for my '03 D. Other than that, the Bilstiens seem to be the shock of choice here. I have Koni's on my '01 and love them, but can't afford another set at this time. KYB's it's.

since were discussing shocks. I need new ones as well, except I do highway and light to moderate off roading.

would the rancho 5000's work? does anyone know anything about the skyjacker shocks?

I think the Rancho RS5000's would do well on the D, don't know much about skyjackers myself but, if I'm not mistaken, FireEater had them installed on his lifted '98 D with no complaints.

tykesplace,

Back in April when ordering tires/rims at Sears, they had Rancho shocks on sale ½ price so, as an impulse buy, I also added a set of Rancho RSX17004/17010 shocks to the order and we installed it all at once. Believe the Ranchos came to $180??

OT: Below pic of the bees on fence post: South of Philipsburg on Hwy 38 to Gem Mountain. Sorry to see all the browning pine trees. The mountain areas near and around Helena will look very different in a few years, probably a huge forest fire or more deceased trees?

Yep, those are bees.

(Out of picture frame to the left down the hill a couple hundred yards were a dozen or more bee hive boxes. Didn't capture the hive boxes in any photographs, just the rear of the D & its faded badging)

We're gonna cut em down before that happens. The city just approved $3mm to clear 800 acres. Chip 'em or firewood for low income this winter.

5000's and SensaTracs are made by the same folks and are basicly the same shock. I have the SensaTracs and they have held up real well both on and off road.

The Bilsteins will serve you well

I replaced my shocks last year and went against the conventional opinions here of the brands listed. I went with Gabriel Ultra's from Autozone. They were $33 apiece with an LLW and so far they're great. I can't compare them to the other brands mentioned since I've never used them. My D is a daily driver on the regular roads for 99% of the time. I don't go offroading but I do use the truck on the property to haul trees and junk around? if you consider that "off road." They're white in color and show dirt pretty easily but other than that, no complaints.
