Hi folks, Sonce the volume control on the stock radio is pretty much chot I' kicking aroun dhte idea of a replacement BUT I have a couple of questions before I jump into it.

First of all I kinda like the stock head unit because of the din and a half thing. I just am not crazy about putting a din unit it that space. The colume control on mine sometimes works, most often not so mcuh. I did the AllPar thing, took it a part and sprayed the pot with contact cleaner. It worked better but still doesn't always work correctly. Sometimes it won't turn down, plus the cleaner seems to have turned a seciont of the LEDS from green to a not so lovely orange.

Secondly I was looking at JVC HD1 because one of the engineers at the radio station where I work has one and highly recommends it. But it's the single DIN and like I said I'm not crazy about that but??

I don't want a boom car sound stock is fine for me. However since I don't have an Infinity system if I wanted to put in a small amp is there a unit that would mount behind the passenger kick panel?

I >might< go for a unit that has a DVD video display IF I can hook up a rear camera unit through inputs. I've seen a couple with pop up screens but when they're out they kinda block the dash vents. Will that damage the screen?

One big thing is I don't want to have to change the speakers unless I have to. IIRC they're 4 ohm. Do most of the aftermarket units only have 8ohm outputs? Are there any that would fit without changing the speakers?

If that's true I guess I pretty much have to stay with a stock unit. I've seen some on eBay but they seem pretty expensive for a used unit.

TIA for any suggestions.

Prisoner, you could always put in a din and a half radio to fill the whole opening.eclipse and alpine are a couple of the good brands that carry these head units.yo could use a touchscreen that'll have outputs for a camera.when not using the camera you could always leave it slid in the housing so it won't block your vents.there are several companies that make amps that would fit behind the kick panel.eclipse, kenwood, sony, precision power(art series),etc all make smaller amps that would work behind there.also if you're on eBay if you can find the soundstream "lil' wonder" series of amps these would be perfect as well.real good power in a small chassis.

You can play with the ohm's a little bit. If you skip the fader (then you can't switch between front and rear ) and hook the left side speakers to the front left output in this way : head unit front left + to front speaker + then front speaker - to rear speaker + and rear speaker - to head unit front left - If the speakers in our trucks are 4 ohm (I haven't checked that) than they'll be 8 ohms with this hook up and then off course you hook the right site the same way. This way you can get a head unit you want even plug in an extra amp if you like and even ad speakers in the rear and hook them up to rear off the head unit. Just an idea. :cheesy: [/list]

Hmmm interesting idea Siggi. That way I can have a couple of extra speakers in the back. I like that! I should have realized I could do that because I work in radio?duh. Must have been a senior moment.

And thanks loudrango for the soundstream tip. That looks like it'd be just fine.

Your welcome I was just working on a drawing in word to send you but since you know what i'm talking about no need. just get enough power to drive those suckers and your ok :cheesy: 20 years ago when I was a store manager for the JVC dealer in Iceland the headunits for cars where allways 4 ohms. Guess this has changed through the years.

you can probably get a replacement factory radio for it pretty cheap? lots were pulled to install aftermarket head units?

They're very common radios, and lots of similar radios will fit? when I pulled the original 'infinity' head unit out of my '99 to install an aftermarket, I popped the original into our 95 Caravan? same fit, same wires?

I used the Soundstorm 4F400 amp to replace my factory Infinity amp, and I thought the sound was very good, and the amp was cheap to boot. I recently saw it on Amazon for as little as $36. I have a thread in the Gen1 modding section about how it fit in the stock location and all that, so take a look. I also used a while back a single DIN JVC DVD unit with a built in 3.5 inch screen, and had a rear view camera hooked up to it, worked real well. It was the KD-AVX2, but I think there's a newer model out now.

A real nice replacement head comes from Pioneer. The make a direct fit for both the Chrysler and GM units. Looks good and works real well. Cruthfield has a fairly good price. I put in a pioneer iPod adaptor kit that connects to the bottom of the iPod and charges and works the iPod through the head at the same time. I ran the cable through the cigarette tray, where it hides when not in use.

How about using my perfect stocker? It's been out of the D for about 60 days. The Alpine I have isn't working correctly (cuts on and off) however I know I can get it looked at and taken care of. I was hanging onto the stocker in case but if you as a DOCer need it? it's yours.

It's an Infinity? has the 3 way EQ sliders on it, CD and Cassette. It also fits your dash perfectly. To swap the radio takes about 10 minutes.

What's it worth on the street? What are they selling for on eBay? Take that average and fair price? subtract 10%? make that your offer? and it's yours.

Thanks Indy, I'll check eBay and see if I can figure out what they're going for. BTW I've just about finished my dash install. the wheel ring looks great with it. The only problems I've had so far is that I put a very small crack in one of the piees on the overhead unit where it makes a really tight bend around the map lights. It's so small I may just leave it alone. I'll have the same problem on one of the pieces on the armrest?a real tight bend and the material is thin.

Then there's this mystery piece I can't figure out. It has holes for two cup holders and then a sort of half rectangle behind that. I already have pices on the front cup holders, it's too big for the back and you'd REALLY have to bend it to fit. The only other place would be the cup holders in the rear armrest but it's too big for there and not the correct shape.

When my youngest boy gets back from the Derby Sunday - he marched in the parade Thursday with his High School band - he and I'll fiddle with it then. If we can't figure it out I'll post a pic and see if anyone recognizes it. I figure it must be a piece to cover a running change between 98 and 99 or 00.
