Anyone installed a remote starter? Any prefs/probs/things to avoid etc on a 99 5.9L? TIA

Greg, just a reminder? make sure you disconnect your battery when doing the install and when working on anything related to the electrical system on the D.

Rick hit the nail on the head. The factory alarm is fine for a door opened alarm trip. Not a broken window, etc. A broken window and a theft of all the stuff inside won't trip the factory alarm unless they open the door.

I like this one: http://www.viper.com/Products/Product.aspx?ProductID=102

Ended up ordering the Viper 791XV and got a good deal since a friend of mine knows the owner of one of the distributors/installers. But here's my question. He said the unit comes with a set of default features but that the rest, you can get two of them included, are charged extra. It's clear he gets all his cash from labor as the price he gave me on the unit is cheaper than in the Lower 48s. But does that sound right as to getting 2 included in the install and the rest you pay extra?

Maybe it involves extra Diodes or sensors of sorts, plus some addittional Labor

I don't believe the window feature requires any addittional parts just a relay maybe

Yeah, this is a little old. But it shows that I do actually search before I post.

With it getting colder I want to get a remote start system. All I seem to find are references to the Viper system. That's the concensus around here I suppose.

Greg, did you install it? How easy/hard was it? I really want one but in the name of cost I'm hoping to install it myself.

No I had it installed. No time and I needed it to work in Alaska as I wasn't going to futz with it this time of year. Cost is based on number of sensors and functions. I believe you get two or three FOB any others are extra. The standard ones are: remote start of course, hood sensor and window breakage. Additional channels are available to you to expand your system: rear hatch release, auto window opening etc.

Thanks, that does help. All I really want is remote start. Durangutan is in no danger of being stolen, trust me. I've seen some of the D's on here, and this one would go completely unnoticed next to them. Unless of course, someone's just dying to have those small chrome stock wheels, or a crash test dummy leg.

If you had decided to install it yourself, did it look like it was pretty easy if you had the time?

You must have a clear grasp of the elctronics and electrical layout. Since the basic two or three functions are inclouded in the cost I didn't' quibble. If I had the time and patience and it wouldn't be a do or die thing? yes I'd have tackled it.

That Viper model is the best one. There are so many cool upgrades that can be added.

I don't know how handy you're at moderate-level low voltage wiring, but my boys at Car Toys do such good work I let them have at it. They popped it in in under 3 hours (I'm so picky, it'd have taken me two days.) That included installation of all of the bells & whistles. If you buy the system from them, the install is peanuts.

I'm confident that I could do it, with minimal under hood fires. I was thinking of finding one on craigslist or eBay, not a brand new one. Of course, I'll check cost of new vs used first. Sure, I'd prefer to get a brand spaking new one, installed for me, but I have to be super mindful of the budget, especially this time of year.

Don't be silly I'd never buy anything like this used.
