The R/T has so much more bang for the buck over the standard SLT imo. It'd cost a lot to modify a SLT to R/T stats. I also love the AWD most of the time. I might swap in a NP242 one of these days RWD, AWD, 4 High, and 4 Low.

I guess it's more than people realize. R/T seats, AWD, R/T 17" rims 275R60s, 3.92 gears, rear limited slip, tow package, running boards, 3rd row, rear air, 9.25 rear, 1" drop, wopping 5HP more(lol), front and rear sway bars, NO CHROME!, but it's all standard equipment on the R/T some of which isn't even available in the SLT+.

Plus you get the joy in driving an R/T which goes back 40+ years.

And I just like poking a little fun at the SL(u)T guys.

No 1" drop. R/T is the standart 4x4 height.

The only real difference between the SLT+ and the R/T in 99 was the R/T plastered all over and the 5 hp. I have everything they have and a full transfer case for selection of how I want to use my power. The only advantage I see in having an R/T is that when the LSD dies, you can get an ARB locker for the rear end with the small diff.

And BTW no I don't care if your R/T is faster than my D so don't come back and tell me how jealous I am of you? if I'd wanted one at the time, I'd have purchased one. Also, put some type of mesh in that grill!

Nope. In fact the Durango R/T isn't lowered, although the Dakota R/T is lowered 1". The 2wd sits about 1 1/2 lower that the 4x4. If yours is lower that his, something is up. My 4x4 was lowered 1" for a number of years and is 2" now. It's at about 2wd height.

I don't race anyone in my "D" ever. I tow with it and drive it daily. Durango's weren't made to go fast or go off road. If you want to go fast, get a sports car, If you want to go offroad, get a jeep.

I do love the "D" but only bought it because it can FIT 2 car seats in the back. Kinda laughed when I sold my 91 Wrangler private seller for more than I paid for the 2000 "D" retail.

I beg to differ on the off-road part. I go places that make jeep owners jaws drop and just as easily AND in dust free air conditioned comfort. I drive black diamond rated trails here in CA all the time with no troubles. Admittedly, it won't handle a real rock garden like the Hammers Stoddard valley without body damage but it really is a nice family ride if equipped right. It'll also eat sand with the best PU's out there. It all depends on how it's equipped and who's driving it.

O'yes  , I beg to deferrer too :!: Ds are a very well compatible /capable vehicle off-road, except in an extreme terrain environment. A while back, there was a huge contingent of Western US DOC members that regularly took their Ds out for a Sunday drive on the off-road trails. And there still are a few here that venture out onto the trails. I'm sure they?ll pipe in with comments?.

I've had the pleasure to do a couple of Crown King runs and others with the AZ group when Dave and Sally and I trekked over from SoCal. The restaurant up there's phenomenal! The trail is lots of fun with some nice challenges. Phoenix has quite a few great places to ride. There are lots of opportunities out there for any type of off-road tastes, from mud to sand, to rock to forest trail. Whatever you might like, you'll find some D's and Dak's out there doing it.

There aren't very many Durangos that could follow me in the XJ.

I could building anything into a crawler. Just have to ditch the IFS and rear axle, get a better t-case, cut almost all the body off, take off the doors and all windows, get full cage made to replace the roof, get some full width axles with low gears and lockers, custom build a suspension, make skid plate for the entire undercarriage and, after all that, it'd look like a Jeep anyways.

I agree. I'm not a serious off roader and I certainly don't buff my D on a weekly basis but, I can support the fact that a D will plow through a butt load off mud (over the running boards) without even slowing down. I did that by accident, without scoping out or knowing the terrain.

The third row seats are a bonus. We have three young kids and putting "arm" swinging space between them is a huge bonus. We wouldn't have bought a D without it. There's not a fight for Co-pilot, but the fight is for the back seat. And, of course the built-in head rest DVD monitors with remote head phones are a major bonus.

I now generally do non-county maintained roads or cow paths (bi-weekly) so that if something does scew up, it won't cost me a boat load of money to get me out. But, the kids love it. We have seen Moose, Deer, Painted Turtles, found fishing spots, ect. and that's what's all about to us.

When all is said and done, and this truck isn't our main family mover and I can afford it, I'll be adding a bush bar, winch and maybe a lift kit so I can do some more serious (fun) off roading.

Plus, we live in the highest accumulation of snow load in Ontario. I have now problem plowing through a crap load of snow, plowing through snow banks and getting my kids to our ski hill at 8:30 am safely. A 1hr. drive.

Now I'm ranting?Other than the elect. problems I've had, It's a nice driving, family off-road Truck.

I know that because, I get to drive it periodically, because I bought it for my wife (insert laugh here), but I consider it my truck (insert another laugh here)! I generally get to drive it on the weekends or when she's willing to give it up! :x

Nah, that's not me, my previous D (DTR) was CPR. The pictured D belongs/belonged to Ron C, web-guy for SWDOC, from AZ, the Phoenix area. Unsure if Ron is still living in the Phoenix area. The photo is an example of one of Angela's trail snap shots and the AZ DOC trail rides, and before I really knew her.
Get this, Angela hooked up with the Valley of the Sun D Owners for trail drives, all while she had the two-wheel drive version of Furious on the first couple outtings. Then, found out that one really really should use 4x4 traction in spots on the trail sections. So, she went out and purchased a 4x4 LSD FR version.

There aren't very many XJ's that could follow you in your XJ. It's obviously heavily modified specifically for off road use. I've seen plenty of Durangos modded to that extent and beyond. I'll wager there are at least a few Durangos out there that you couldn't follow in your XJ. ;)

R/T seats
Nope. Instead of R/T seats with the black leather mixed with easy to get dirty/hard to clean suede patches in the center, my SLT+ has all black leather with embroidered Ram's head in the main center panel on each seat. Additionally, the R/T seat suede patch is a large piece. The SLT+ breaks that area up into smaller sections for easier wear and greater comfort by allowing more movement and molding to the seated individual.

There's no drop on the R/T. The 2x4 actually sits lower than an R/T. The AWD/FT4x4/RT all sit at the exact same height.

Well, not stock but I got past that by any number of entry level mods? if I had only stopped there. :bugeyed:

NO CHROME
R/Ts came with chrome badges so it does have chrome. As for my SLT+? Oh I got chrome baby, chrome indeed! More everyday.

Yawn. Other than the single year 2000 (which was simply a different PCM tune requiring premium 92+ fuel), R/T on the D is all marketing and has nothing to connect the D to classic R/Ts of the past. Anyone thinking their stock R/T is something special (I can point you to an entire site of Daks that do) have been successfully brainwashed by the C, LLC marketing team.

A hater on the Sluts eh? Sluts have all the fun. I bet you were picked last at dodgeball in gym class too. No?

In fact, Dodge sluts and I get along just fine. She's on a real chrome covered from-the-factory R/T by the way.

you guys are too funny, or bored, one of the 2.

BTW I have silver R/T badges. There'll never be any chrome on my rigs. Unless of course I get my dream car, 1970 Challenger R/T.

Think about it, you could also get an SE challenger with every available option back in the 70's. It probably wasn't much different than the R/T back then. How often do you actually see SLT+'s or 5.9s in Durango's? My whole argument was that an R/T is better than most of the "D"s (2wd, small V8 cloth) you'll ever see for sale.

nice thread

only time I'll be seen in a s l u t is when my wife plays dress up. HAHAHA.

I agree, DC should have done more with the R/T, I mean 5 hp really?

y'all wouldn't be talking so much smack if it had shelby specs. but probably still I'd?

Is it so wrong to have a little "D" pride?

This is my S-L-U-T. There are many like her but this D is mine. My D is my best friend. She's my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my D is useless. Without my D I'm useless. I must drive my D true. I must drive farther than my enemy, who's trying to outdrive me. I must outmod him before he outmods me. Before God I swear this creed: my D and myself are defenders of the DOC, we're the masters of our enemy, we're the saviors of my Club. So be it, until there's no enemy, but D peace. Amen.

Why would you want to pop curbs? Unless it was by accident. My D is a daily driver and it gets me and my ever expanding family around in comfort and style. Besides, it's got the driver selectable 4X4 option and in snow storms, it leaves all others in its wake.
