I've been a big user of Mobil 1 oil and plan to put the 0-20 Mobil 1 Extended performance oil in my new Hemi when the oil change is due.
But....looking in the manual, it has a recommendation of Pennzoil or Shell Helix.
What are you Hemi guys running?

I think that penzoil and shell are recommended because penzoil is the expensive oil from shell and shell is a sponsor for ferrari f1 wich is part of fca. Hell of a conspiracy theory huh.

I'll check the dipstick for odd colors or smells and if nothing appears out of the ordinary then I'll wait till about 7500 miles to change it--which has conveniently been about the time my catch can needs emptying. I've been using Royal Purple 5w20 and Wix oil filters.

I opted for the 4 oil changes for the price of one at the stealership. This will cover the first 2 years then I will switch to synthetic like i have run in all my previous cars.

I switched to Full Synthetic Penzoil Ultra in Both of my Hemi's at 2K miles 1st change. I change my oil every 5-6K in my wifes Charger and twice a year in the Durango. My D has almost 13K miles on it and it has had 4 oil changes
Both Motors are solid and run perfect
GUESS I AM AN OLD SCHOOLER AS WELL...LOL

Haven't had cork gaskets since the 80's .and they were valve cover and oil pan. Cork gaskets weren't even mentioned until your post. I'm well aware cork isn't used, that's why I never referenced them. They worked OK if you never tightened to tight. Main seals ,cam seals etc don't use cork and on the SRTs that come factory filled with 100% synthetic, the mfg conditions seals before install. You only come across that care and attention on Higher end vehicles.

For those who are against synthetic so early, how long would you say it takes for the seals to seat? I'm at 1300 miles so far, with the engine timer showing around 30 hours run time. If that continues pace, and let's just say it alerts me to change oil at 7k, that's over 160 hours of run time..

Also, I remember reading (online latest version of Durango manual I think) that the engine comes from the factory with a special blend oil to aid in break-in. If after the first oil change your going to the "non special" oil, whatever it was you would think break-in would be done by then, no?

Edit: I have the V6

The dealer recommended 3500 miles for my 2014 T&C with the same engine as yours. We bought it in October, but it sat on the dealer lot for a long while bad has a 3/14 build date, so this week I took it in and got its oil changed at 1,200 miles. I asked about switching to synthetic and they said I should wait until at least 2500 but be more like 3500. So I changed it with regular oil this time around. In July when it has been 6 months and has 3000 miles on it I will switch to synthetic then change it yearly, because the van is only being drove 3,500 to 4,000 per year.

On the other hand I did my first oil change in the Durango at 3,317 and switched straight to synthetic oil, then changed it again at 11,313 4 months later. I let the dealer change the oil in both vehicles because I have the lifetime warranty on both and I don't want any issues with claims of missing scheduled maintenance and it builds a relationship with the dealer and they will be less likely to fight you if a "questionable" claim comes in.

Yea, so I'll just wait till it tells me to change the oil, which should be way over 3500 miles based on experience. My 2013 wrangler with the same engine didn't ask me to change the oil till almost 9k miles. In that one I changed the oil for the first time at 1200 miles and switched to synthetic with no problems. This time I'm just going to wait until it asks for the first oil change so the factory oil is in there during the full break in period, then I'll switch to synthetic and change every 6k miles like I did with my jeep. Only difference is I'm not doing an early oil change this time for the first one.

My dealer gave us the first 3 oil changes when we bought the D. I called the other day to ask what they use (I'm due for the 1st one). He said the free changes are for synthetic blend. I asked about going to full synthetic and he said no problem, but I'd have to pay the difference. I asked what that was and he said $70! I laughed and said I'd be handling my own oil changes. I did not get a good answer on why synthetic is roughly $10/qt more than semi-syn. It should be roughly $2 more per quart and we need 7 quarts in the 5.7, right? So I would have paid $20 more, but $70 is a f***in rip off.

I keep going to new dealers to allow them to earn my business when I buy a new car, but they just keep disappointing me. I actually don't even trust most people to do a simple oil change, let alone a major repair. I've been lucky that I've been able to do almost all my out of warranty repairs. And i get real nervous when I get any warranty work done - I think they'll screw something up. Guess I'm just paranoid... :)

For my last oil change at dealer here in Btown, techs didn't drain old oil before adding new oil in my '14 D Limited. So I had a double load causing blue smoke to chug out on startup. Luckily I checked level within a day and realized the overload and took it back to the dealer. There was another oil change and perfunctory apology but no compensation. No refund or offer for free future oil changes. So I guess I'm back into the oil change hobby.

Did the last oil change myself Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 . Read some good reviews from people that have sent it out to Blackstone oil testing lab and had good results . From the do it yourself guys whats the trick to getting the oil filter off and not having it spill out on to your hand and arm? Read about breaking it loose then pulling a zip lock bag over it to catch the oil.

As long as it is right viscosity it will be ok

Did my first oil and filter change myself at 1250 miles with Mobile 1 full synthetic. Had a dealer change the oil again at around 6200 and they used Mobile 1 fully synthetic too - kind of funny when Dodge recommends other brands.

I found a coupon to get the oil change at around $57 and saw that they charge only $7 per qt - that is less than $.50 more than I would have to pay at Walmart, so that seem pretty fair to me.

I wonder what the best way to prove that you did your oil changes is? I have the MaxCare lifetime warranty, but plan to do my oil changes myself after the factory warranty runs out and would like to know how to document it properly.

Well, for record keeping I just keep the receipt for the oil/filter, circle the date, and write the mileage on it. I keep the receipt with the maintenance log. OK, I used to do that anyway. I haven't been as tight with receipt keeping lately, getting old I guess.
