So I have my first official trip report. Drove our 2021 R/T TnG from our house outside of Brighton (NE of Denver by a few miles) to Ouray and back over the holiday.
Total round trip mileage, including a jaunt over to Telluride via Dallas Divide, was 798.3 miles.
Gas mileage via the instrument cluster was 22.0MPG.
We took HWY 285, which the family has always referred to as the "pretty route". Could be the views are spectacular, or could be that typically it is "pretty" slow, especially on the return to Denver. It is a 2 lane road mostly once out of the Denver metro, made up of winding mountain roads that traverse spectacular scenery as well as everything from wide valleys such as South Park to precipitous drops off the side like the west side of Monarch pass. There are several smaller passes along the route; Kenosha, Red Hill, Trout Creek and Cerro to name a few, and at least one that was able to give the DD a little challenge in the form of a 6.4% grade of Monarch Pass for just over 11 miles east to west, and just over 10 miles west to east. While some report Monarch to be 7%, officially the CDOT website lists it as 6.4%, and all of that is two lane with the exception of several double lane passing areas on both approaches. Granted, we weren't towing anything, but I know how these passes can get to be a PITA with traffic at various speeds regardless.
Thoughts--
Teenage kids (2x) like the captains chairs with the center console. Plenty of control and charging for phones and such.
Adaptive cruise was welcome during several sections of the drive. On rare occasion, it worked a little too well. But that was due probably to mountain driving and varied speeds of other motorists.
Lane assist was nice, but since this was mostly winding 2-lane roads, I didn't play with that as much.
The Durango kept speeds easily, even on the passes. Always more power available when needing to pass.
Around turns we were comfortable in the seats. Very little jostling.
Turning and accelerating on Monarch Pass felt sure footed. Never got the impression it would break-away, even considering sand and gravel still on the road for traction in inclement weather.
The emergency/parking brake lever is kinda in the way for stretching out during trips like this--I am 6'3". The E-brake and the very corner of the center console were just at the right place for either my left shin to conflict with (E-brake) or my right knee to bump the volume dial.
The Emergency Flasher button is way too easy to turn on while reaching into the area below it. Not even while driving, but picking up/putting down the phone on the wireless charging station bumped the flasher button on or off.
Plenty of room for our stuff.
Overall?
This was about as comfortable a drive as it has ever been for us. Best MPG for sure. Fun to play on the passes with the power and the 10" wide shoes. The ride was comfortable, quiet inside and warm. We had great weather, and the scenery was as always--amazing.
