Hi Guys, Happy Thanksgiving.

Drove the D to the farm about 90 miles north of where we live. Wife was driving, I was sleeping. When she pulled off the interstate exit ramp there was a noise I haven't heard before. Noise and vibration. We pulled out from a dead stop and it sounded and felt like the rear tires were on rumble strips.

I don't think there are rumble strips. Drove a few more miles and almost every time we started from a dead stop the same thing happened. Not as loud or strong but it was there.

At the house I drove it up and down a side road and it happened again. Not all the time but it was there.

I also noticed a cunk noise in reverse. It sounded llike it was happening once every wheel revolution.

We checked the tranny fluid and found it down about a pint. Put some in and it still seemed to be down the same amount. I haven't noticed anything dripping recenlty and the fluid was at the normal mark a couple of weeks ago.

FYI it's a98 D with the 5.2 aand both full and part time 4WD.

Any Ideas?

Thanks. We have to drive back home tonight? thinking about going out to see if we can find some tranny fluid.

Sounds Like the posi is slipping. If you've had the rear dif serviced recently, did you add friction modifier?

I'd agree with FSTDANGO3 except for the clunk every rotation in reverse. Check your rear U-joints.

The clunk is probably a lot of slap in that rear. My guess is your rear diff and posi unit are about to check out? sorry? but please don't use the same guy for the repairs as in the Darn diffs - another $2000? thread.
It should be about $1000 with a new posi unit and all.

Katrina recovery has been long, tedious and tiring, but everything is getting back to normal.

The rear diff is prone to loosing the pinion bearing and thus gear mesh. Climb under and see if you're loosing gear oil at the front of the diff and if you can move the pinion up and down or otherways.
