No Bus Reading a Mystery to Dodge Dealership

HERE IS AN UPDATE ON THE "NO BUS" post printed below: One week later The dealer advised that I indeed need a new PCM. Also advised I need a new battery. The D tested with a PCM failure however I asked them if the battery is bad would that cause the PCM to act up like it has been. They stated "NO" it's two separate problems.

Hope you're all sitting down for the price they quoted me for the PCM - ready - :bugeyed: $629.88 and $225 to install it. :bugeyed: After a few awful words they have agreed to install any PCM I purchased from another dealer at the $225. They don't charge by the hour, they charge by the job. So it looks like I'm going to contact a few of you over the weekend.

I'd like to THANK all of your inputs as this has been one hell of a learning experience.

Original Post: NO BUS situation? it's still a mystery to Dodge. I have a 99 Durango 4wd, 5.8 liter SUV. This SUV has been in the shop four times and they can't find anything wrong with it. Service Tech told me when it happens again to drive it right over and they may get some reading. I did that and still no readings on what's wrong with this gem.

Friday night took the cake? It'd drive 11 miles, die while driving, I wait a few minutes and it'll start up again. I drove a quarter of a mile, it did it again?repeat starting it up. It did this for over an hour approx. every mile I drove it. I did call a tow truck thinking the last time it took almost 30 minutes but it started up and I drove it straight to Dodge but it was 9 pm. I have mechanics calling techicians and have the service manager on it. I'm so frustrated and have no car at all now. No one seems to know. Yes I have told them about all this PCM and Dodge Talk and they tell me it's not the PCM. Now what!

I did see some code numbers in the odometer which I didn't see before. After the Dodge looses power while driving all my gauges drop so it looks like I have no fuel, no battery, etc. I hold down the trip button until I see the words "check" and wait a few seconds and everything seemed to be fine. Last night when I did that there were three numbers that showed up on the trip and it read the numbers 920, 921 and 999. Does anyone know what this means?

So far I have asked them to double check the fuel relay, OEM coil, and the PCM and they're still scratching their xxxx's.

Any suggestions? :?

Sounds like So Cal has taken the lead in high fuel cost, I'm not finding a station around with less than 3.27/ gal. Regular, 3.47 prem. :wall:

Well they're saying $4 a gallon by Mid Summer here in the NORTHEAST

Actually, I could run regular with mine. I never had a pinging issue to begin with, so that may be some difference. The first thing that I noticed after a little more power was that the cruise control had no speed limiter in it. The stock PCM limits you to about 85 mph in cruise. The performance PCM doesn't have that limit. There's still a "soft spot" with the performance PCM and the m-1/TB combo. If you want smooth pick up over the entire throttle range go with the B&G flash.

The Mopar Performance version was milder. The B&G advances the timing to a greater extent. I swear I could do better with a carb and a MSD Distributor/ vacuum advance.

rant off now.

you're wrong, Pres? I used 87 in mine until I put the Flashed PCM in and the M1.

When I added my MPPCM, I had the stock intake manifold. the performance gain was pretty nice. WOT shift went from 4600 RPM to 5500 RPM. I don't know what the top speed is because I never hit it. I have been about 110 in it but that was after the M1 install. In my opinion, it really woke up the motor. I have my MPPCM one since I flashed my stock one. If someone wants to try it out, let me know. pay for shipping and I'll send it out. I had an issue with it not shifting at WOT twice. maybe it wasn't the PCM, but I didn't want to take a chance so I put the flashed one back in. I had it in for a while to run 87 to save some cash back when regular was $3.50? looks like it's going there again.

anyway, let me know if I can help.

Hmm The paperwork and te stuff I saw Clearly stated that you're required to run Premium Fuel in Ride after installing this PERF PCM.
I can be wrong but I believe that's what it says
You may have run regular Dwayne but you may also have gotten Lucky on the pinging issue as well.
I'd still recommend the Flash Thru Fastman over the Mopar anytime

920=The cluster isn't receiving a vehicle speed message from the PCM
1. Check the PCM software level and reflash if required
2. Use a DRB scan tool to verify that the vehicle speed message is being sent by the PCM
921=The cluster isn't receiving a distance pulse message from the PCM
1. Check the PCM software level and reflash if required
2. Use a DRB scan tool to verify that the distance pulse message is being sent by the PCM
999=An error has been discovered (my pesonal favorite)
1. Record the failure message
2. Depress the trip odometer reset button to continue the self-diagnostic test.

From the 1999 Durango FSM

Been there, done that, got a new PCM

Good luck,
Dave

Dave you had definitely went thru everything before replacing that PCM. That's why from the beginning I said they needed a new PCM.
We all learned from you on this one

Yes the Mopar computer instructions recommend preminum but what's actually required depends on how you engine runs. With any engine you want to run the minimum octane without pinging. Most people with the Mopar PCM don't have to use premimum. I have no pinging with plus. I have found hit or miss with regular so I use plus all the time.
