Hi I'm new here? and I have a 2000 4x4 SLT Durango, that only recently crossed the 30,000 mile mark.

I recently rec'd a flyer in the mail from my dealer (OC Dodge) advertising a "major 30,000 mile service" for $234.95. I called to inquire and they told me my vehicle is a 4x4 and the proper service would be more like $750!! (which included a lot of things NOT listed in the service manual like cleaning injectors, fuel filter, synth diff fluid etc etc.)

What do people pay for 30,000 mile service? What's really required?

My vehicle is out of warranty at this point, so does it matter if I do dealer servicings or not? Can anyone recommend a good independent shop in my area (Orange County California?) Any info much appreciated.

Many thanks!!

Hi there!

I have a 2002 4x4 4.7L and to me the price they quoted you seems REALLY high. I can look it up tonight what I paid for the 30k service. If I'm not mistaken, the bigger items were transmission service (drain & refill), transfer case service (drain & refill), new spark plugs?and a few other minor things. I can tell ya for sure once I can look at my service records at home tonight.

Best,
Nico

Thanks for the info Nico, you da man!! Did they do fuel injector servicing on yours at that time?

FYI I just got a quote from an independent shop for $379. That doesn't however include fuel injector service or changing the fuel filter, which isn't called for in the manual but my dealer was recommending (it'd be an additional $120, if needed, at this independent shop.)

Someone is trying to pick your pocket.

Unless you have reason to believe that your injectors need cleaning, having them cleaned is a pure money-maker for the shop. and they make quite a lot of profit on it.

fuel filters aren't scheduled maintenance items on any Gen1 D (and I doubt they're on Gen1I D's.) getting at them requires dropping the fuel tank. From the '03 FSM:

FUEL FILTER/PRESSURE REGULATOR
DESCRIPTION
A combination fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator
(Fig. 1) is used on all engines. It's located on the
top of the fuel pump module. A separate frame
mounted fuel filter isn't used with any engine.
Both fuel filters (at bottom of fuel pump module
and within fuel pressure regulator) are designed for
extended service. They don't require normal scheduled
maintenance. Filters should only be replaced if
a diagnostic procedure indicates to do so.

Re: MY00 Durango 4x4 - 30,000 mi Service Question Help!!

Your owner's manual lists all the required services at a given mileage?

As far as the injetcor cleanings etc I have never had any on my vehicles?if it ain't broke, don't fix it? :)

Yeah, it seems as if they're trying to rip you off! I agree with the fuel pump issue. It's a non-serviceable item!! Secondly, fuel injector cleaning isn't part of any official Dodge (Durango) service interval. Replace the injectors should they fail, other than that, don't worry about it. If you don't use Chevron gasoline already, pouring a bottle of Chevron's Techron into your fuel tank (you can get it at Autozone etc.) will clean them perfectly for under $10.

Best,
Nico

I agree, it sounds like a rip-off.
I have 65000 miles on my 2K SLT 5.9 4x4. Have never had the injector cleaner service done (my Buick dealer keeps bugging me to have it done on the Regal, too, so it must be a good moneymaker.) The fuel filter is a non-serviceable item - it's integral with the fuel pump in your gas tank.
If you want to keep your injectors and fuel likes clean, throw a can of Techron into your gas tank every 3000 miles.
Other big ticket items you should consider:
Tranny drain and fill (with filters) - typically $129 at the dealer
Diff drain and fill - $60-$75 per axle, especially if they remove the cover rather than suck the gear oil out.
Transfer case drain and also about $50-$60
Plugs you can do yourself. If you have a 5.9, doing cap, rotor, and wires may also be recommended. Also something you can do in an afternoon. If not, the parts will run about $60 and you'll need to get them installed.

As far as diff service is concerned, the Dodge dealerships around here charge 39.95 per differential if you bring in your own oil. I always bring my own gear oil. They pull the diff covers too. The one in the front is a little bit tricky the rear is very easy.

Best,
Nico
