Noob here to introduce myself and my new to me Durango. Long story short, the tranny of our 04 Honda Pilot family hauler of 10 yrs and 173k reliable miles finally died. Quotes for a reman installed were hovering in the $3700 range. So I decided to replace our Pilot with something similar but with better mechanical reliability and slightly better towing capacity. We tow a small seadoo jet boat in the summer or a trailer with dirt bikes in the fall/spring. In the winter, we go snowboarding/skiing so 4wd/awd was a must.

I came across a 2006 1-owner durango SLT AWD with the magnum V8 and only 122k miles. Mechanically, it was well maintained and it drove great. Cosmetically, the interior looked like the 3 kids that it raised for 13yrs spilled anything and everything on the seats, carpets and doors. The paint was free of fading and aside from some light scratches here and there, as well as a bubbling chrome grill, it looked really good. I picked it up for $3100 and immediately got to work to get it up to my standards.

First step was to remove all the seats. I vacuumed then spot cleaned all the stains off the carpets, then took it to a detailer to shampoo them. Then I spot cleaned all the seats, then put them back on and had those also professionally cleaned. Total cost was $65. Then I cleaned every panel, crevice etc. When all was done, the interior was spotless and smelled great!

With some free time during the Thanksgiving week, I picked up some parts at the local pick and pulls to restore bits and pieces and add some parts I wanted our Durango to have. I replaced the cracking/warped window seals on all 4 doors. I replaced the drivers seat back (which had a broken pocket) with the panel from the passenger side. I replaced 4 seatbelt buckle stops so the buckles no longer fall to the floor. I replaced a broken front passenger vent. I installed running boards from an adventurer model. I replaced the basic rear view mirror with an autodimming one. I replaced the 3rd row seatback with one that has the flaps that fold over to fill the voids and make a better flat bed. I installed the trunk organizer also from the adventurer model.

I also sanded and polished the cloudy headlights.

I purchased and installed some new front suspension components: gabriel ultra shocks all around, front upper control arms, front sway bar poly bushings and front end links.

I peeled off all chrome from the front grill then painted it and also the bottom section of the bumper with silver plastidip.

Finally, I picked up a set of Ram Sport 1500 20x9 et19" wheels and had Ohtsu ST5000 tires in 265/50/20 oem size installed to replace the 18's it came with.

We've had it for almost a month and have already taken it on a couple of road trips: Death Valley and Brian Head, UT (it did excellent in the snow).

I've learned a lot from the forum and am hoping to learn even more as I continue to own and maintain it. It's been a great family hauler so far and I've been enjoying resto-modding it.

Here are some pics taken along its journey.

Welcome! Looks great. One thing though, those headlights will soon haze over again, at least from my experience. I'd consider replacing them next time.

I have those shocks too and they've been great.

Any rusting seen on the driver's rear quarter? A huge issue with the gen 2 models.

Welcome aboard!!

Welcome - You've been busy! Love that color.
Thank you! It's been a lot of fun. I've mostly owned/maintained/modded german cars (VW's & Audi's). I never cared much to do anything to our Honda Pilot other than maintenance. It was just a people mover to me (although a very reliable one). But this Durango is so easy and enjoyable (so far) to work on. I can't belive I was able to replace the rear shocks without even lifting the rear end ?. And parts are so much cheaper compared to the VAG cars. $67 total for a new set of shocks!!! And there are so many Durango's at the pic-n-pull as well.

I believe you. I did apply some cheapo eBay Mr9x ceramic coating after I polished them. I'm hoping it lasts a few months to buy me some time before having to by new headlights.

Good to hear! I found them on sale on Autozone for about $65 total. When I pulled the stock shocks off, I was surpised to see that they seemed OK actually. But for the priced of the Gabriels and lifetime warranty from Autozone, I went ahead and kept/installed them. They seem to ride marginally firmer than the OEM sachs shocks.

Yes - the PO lived in MN for a few years before moving to AZ, so there is some light rust on the very bottom of the drivers side rear quarter. There's also some rust on the inside bottom of the doors. I've never had to deal with rust having lived in CA and now in NV, so this is new to me. Any suggestions on what to do to treat the rust?

Thank you ?

Ah, the rust. I'm not the one to ask about rust treatment, because my stance is 'replace the parts that can come off, cut and patch in new parts that don't come off'. I have the same rust as you and am not looking forward to eventually having to deal with it, one way or another.

Welcome to the group! Nice resoration / detailing job! Looks showroom! Might want to do a simple drain/fill on the trans if there is no record of it being done at that mileage. Couldn't hurt.

Thank you! Fortunately for me, the previous owner mentioned he felt the car running rough last year and thought it was the tranny so he took it to a shop. The mechanic told him the condition of the tranny looked excellent from the condition of the fluid, etc when he dropped the pan. It turned out to be a bad throttle position sensor which fixing the rough running. So at least the tranny fluid is just about a year old. The color and level both look good.

That was my primary concern when buying this Durango after just having experienced the tranny failure on our Pilot [emoji51]

I am planning though to drain/fill the rear diff and transfer case since he had no records for that, as well as drain/fill the brake fluid since its dark. The coolant looks good.

Any other fluids I should check?

Surprise the Pilot trans lasted as long as it did. It is the same FAILURE transmission that was in the Accords and Odysseys.

I bought a silver 05 SLT 2wd with Hemi and towing package a year ago, then I noticed one in dark blue and WANT another, like yours!

Right?! We bought the Pilot used with about 53k miles on it. I immediately installed an aftermarket transmission cooler which was larger than what Honda offered with their 'tow package'. I also changed fluid every 30k using the drain/fill 3x. Maybe that's why it lasted as long as it did? Or we got lucky.

I've been averaging 16mpg and sometimes think I should have gotten a Hemi since mpg's I believe are about the same. Oh well... :)

Honda's fix with to reroute some of the cooling lines to keep second gear clutch pack happy. '04 they almost had it right, '05 was considered the first year they finally got it right. The 30k 3x flush/fill helps but is a PITA. Don't trust the MPG numbers from the display. Mine are about 2 mpg higher than real numbers, but the speedo is off by 5%.

I've had it read 21-22 mpg on flat highway at 68 mph indicated. Mind I used to be on Ecomodders forum and have gotten above 50 mpg on two different Honda's, 89 CRX and 93 Civic.

With the Durango, I just don't care as long as it stays the same. Drove it from OH to Pike's Peak and back this year, gas mileage was steady on the flat plains, but once in the hills and going up to the peak, single digits is normal. But the truck was nearly flawless. The temp gauge did rise a bit the first trip up the mountain, but I had the AC running as well. Once I turned it off, temps were normal.

I bought mine on a whim knowing if I didn't like it, I could sell it for a minor loss. I don't see getting rid of it for some time now.

Plus I can sleep in it at the race track if needed :)
