My Durango makes engine rattle after accelerating or coasting?

Any Durango owners having this problem ? My Durango has some weird engine rattle when accelerating, and it loses power?

Example the other day on way to church, I had to accelerate to pass an SUV and at 70+ mph it rattled and lost power and this happens a lot? It sounds like a head gasket noise? Any people who might know what this is can help me ? I took it to dealer but no diagnostic, I'm take it to another dealer soon. Please it's driving me crazy. Truck has 16,000 miles.

Where are you located? If you haven't yet, I would go back to the dealer, and request that one of their mechanics ride with you so you can show them this noise. If they refuse, it is time to find another dealer. From what you describe, possibly you have a bad tank of fuel, or the engine management system is not doing it's job of timing the engine, hence the noise or rattle upon brisk acceleration.

I took truck to another dealer and had the service advisor assistant ride with me. The truck did make rattle noise and I pointed it out to assistant, when we got back assistant reported the noise to service manager.

They kept truck for a week and told me it was a retainer bracket holding a heat pipe along firewall, and when I got back the rattle still there?

Should I be concerned that this might be some engine problem?

I would take it back, and inform them that the issue is still not corrected. They need to keep at this while the warranty is in force, so FCA can pay, and not you.

Thanks for your advice. It seems that they can't find the rattle noise no matter where I take it. The service advisor told me the technician looked around in engine and found the retainer bracket loose. However, it's still making the rattle, and it seems to that they know the problem but rather deny the issue and give it back to me. ??‍♂

I have it documented, from two different dealerships. I love my Durango; however you guys are right that Chrysler is giving me run around. What documents should I try to obtain in case I need to file a lemon law? All I have is the service reports, when I pick it up. Everything else has been over phone, which I'm sure Chrysler has recorded. I've also called Dodge Cares customer service number, and they never return my calls. ?

You'll have to check with Texas to see what the requirements are.

I wouldn't assume anyone has recorded anything or can access those recordings.

I would definitely stay on Chrysler Cares long enough to get a case number too so you have a reference point with them.

I'd like to say, I'm not bashing Chrysler/Dodge or calling them out. I don't think they build defective cars to mess with consumers, I love this truck. I get lot of compliments, and it's a great vehicle and I'm happy with it. Thanks everyone for your response, the thing is the engine noise is louder. If I post video no one will be able to hear it. I believe that if nothing is loose, then something is wrong with engine. A problem that is slowly developing. This is not normal, I've had several new cars in the past and none made such noise. I'm bummed because this is my wife's daily driver and I really want my family to be safe, that is all.

It doesn’t make sense to have an engine rattle with the loss of power and tech only found a bracket loose?
I’d believe in either engine knocking due to bad gas or clogged up cats but with the last the engine should also miss and throw codes. Also injectors clogged causing the rob of power, should also throw codes.

Where is the video op?

Durangorsm, exactly it doesn’t make sense but this truck is doing just as I stated. I use gas from known stores not small shops. I tried to post video but I’m afraid it won’t allow us to hear it. I’ll try it. No codes, truck has only 18,700 miles. Now truck is also making a loud pop noise when coming to a stop, and second dealer said that was completely normal. I called Chrysler/Dodge Cares and the case manager assigned to me was was rude and told me to keep taking it back, that a case can’t be opened without having truck in the shop. She lied because another employee there gave me a case # 71540abc, when I pointed this out to her, she got mad and told me I’m not a tech, keep taking it back.
It seems Dodge has no respect for there customers.

Chase300, I know it doesn’t make sense. However you know exactly what wrong with your car, because it is your car. Same scenario here, I know this truck because I drive it daily the engine will rattle/vibrate at any given time while pressing gas/ and even just coasting along road. Both dealers are giving me run around and doing there job incorrectly. The truck has also turned off while running on my wife, lucky road was not cluttered with traffic. The truck did start back up however.

So what happens if you floor it from a stop to say 80 mph?
Do you have the rattle at full throttle? Does the engine continue to pull strong? Should pull harder as revs pass 4K to redline.
Is the issue more while cruising at a steady speed? or when coming to a stop?
The stall is worrisome. Has me thinking trans related...assuming engine is performing properly.

Chase300, honestly I don’t drive truck that hard, the truck rattles at certain times, but when it does rattle and you push harder the noise gets louder getting louder then stops. You also feel it losing power, the rattle/vibration is what you feel. Sometimes I’ll be cruising , (not cruise control) and boom the rattle is going on, then goes away. The part that worries me, it that it did turn off while driving. This is wife’s daily driver, and she uses it daily. I would like to keep it but, Dodge so far has been very unprofessional. A co-worker said that he has a tech friend that works for Dodge. That tech told him that it was engine shifting to ECO MODE. However, the rattles still goes on whether eco mode is on or off. So I don’t know what the problem is.
Last but not least, now every time I come to a stop you can hear a loud pop noise coming from engine bottom area. Dealer said it was normal, that is why I’m asking because I never had a dodge and was wondering if this is all normal with these brand?

I know you mentioned you have tried 89 octane, is the engine sounding like it's got marbles inside hitting each other when it happens ? It really sounds from your description that she could be pinging badly.
Do you have 93 octane available ? i know the 6 is supposed to run on 87 or 89, i dont remember. if you're close to empty just fill her up with 93 it won't hurt anything. The more 93 you run in the tank the best. Then see how she does with that octane as a test. I run 91 in mine, but i also have my own tune.

Since you're testing, put the vehicle on rhino ramps go underneath and hit your cats with your hands (make sure they're not hot) and see if you can hear them rattling. they should not make a single noise other than your hand hitting the metal. they should not rattle or sound weird inside.

I'd suggest you to buy some tools so you can make your own diagnostics and see some engine vitals as well.
I use this stuff with an Android table and also from my Android Phone

Mated with AlphaOBD and you can read codes and do some other stuff in your Durango as well.

With the V6, I would occasionally get a knocking noise from engine but no loss of power. Just as you would get from pre-ignition from low octane or carbon buildup. It would happen under light acceleration in ECO mode. It would go away if you applied more or less throttle. I just assumed it was receiving an incorrect fuel/air mix under certain conditions. I have never experience a popping noise when coming to a stop. That sounds like a suspension issue.

I never addressed the knock in the Durango as it's only sporadic and goes away with a change in throttle position. I'm not particular with gas and currently fill at Valero, VP racing Fuels, Tesoro and occasionally at Costco. The pop you are experiencing is not normal. Could be suspension/brake/steering component issue. It sounds like something is binding/loading up on braking and then unloads when reaching a stop, hence the popping noise.
